The thing I don't get about people who get autofilled to support is they don't know what to do there. All you do is annoy the enemy laners, that's it. It isn't hard. With maybe the exception of jungle, you do that in every other position, except you have to do it while CSing. As support, you eliminate the CSing part, so your job is even easier. Play to your champions strengths and annoy the enemy laner.
You get supports that pick Zyra and don't use a single ability all lane phase. Or pick Thresh and never throw a hook. Or pick Soraka and not heal allies. You pick specific supports to do certain jobs, and if you don't do that job or at least ATTEMPT to do that job, pick something else. This isn't hard. I don't care if you miss every hook you throw as Thresh, just throw it if you think you have a good chance to get it or at least walk up and zone them by making them fear being hooked. I don't care if your plants never do damage cause they keep targeting minions, it pressures the enemy off the minion wave for 5 seconds and might give me a CS advantage. Soraka is harder to mess up, but so long as you at least attempt to heal me during fights when I'm tanking damage, then you're doing your job. If your ADC can't see that, then they are an idiot and you should probably mute them.
If you are a Riven one trick, play Riven support. She has two forms of CC, multiple dashs, a shield, and tons of damage. Build a relic shield, buy a sightstone, maybe upgrade to Face of the Mountain or the Eye item, and then buy Riven items. Yeah, you won't have the same burst you would at 10 minutes, and you will be under leveled, but you will be playing a champion who's playstyle you understand and who's abilities aren't foreign to you.
I had a game last season where my support didn't know he was support until we were loading into the game, so we had a comp like Jinx ADC, Nasus Support, Jhin Mid, Shaco Jungle, and something top (can't remember). Nasus didn't buy a support item, but he stood in the bush and let me farm while dropping E's on the enemy. Eventually he got greedy around level 4 or 5, ran up for a kill, and died since the enemy jungler came to gank. He swapped with mid Jhin (his duo) at this point, sending him bot lane with me. Since I wasn't going to fight for CS with a Jhin who was a level or two higher than me, I told him to farm and I'd support. I bought a spellthief and used my rockets to annoy the enemy while Jhin farmed. I ended the game with something like
.
Is this how you should ever build Jinx ADC? Probably not. Would I ever recommend playing support Jinx? No.
What it did do was make the best of a bad situation and play to my champions strengths. AOE crits from rockets plus Runaan's plus BC passive shred means armor shred across the whole team. I cleared wards quickly and helped make up for the drop in DPS when Jhin had to reload. We also had duo execute ults so if he managed to tag someone low with his ult, it made landing mine easier, and if mine didn't kill the person, his sure did after that. We also had duo ADCs to some extent, so if one of us was killed in a fight, the other still output a ton of damage. There was even a point when I was clearing wards and my teammates called me to help with Dragon cause "we need the ADC".
Anyone who "just can't play support" is just honestly not that good at the game since it literally takes all the pressure off you. Unless you are a high priority support like Soraka or maybe Thresh who are great at keeping teammates alive and relatively easy to kill, very rarely are the enemies going to be jumping on you in a teamfight. And if they are, that means that's time your team is doing damage to them and cooldowns they are wasting on a lower priority teammate.
