The Art of Jungling: Intro

Who is a jungler? In layman LoL terms, it means a player who's role is to kill neutral monsters and gank lanes to help teammates get more powerful. This is true but a jungler is much more than that. A good jungler wins games. Same with other lanes but a jungler just has this presence on the map when they are good that the enemy is wary of their location to avoid being obliterated time and time again. Now I'm not a great jungler myself but I'm trying to get. Now here are a few things I've learnt along the way.

  1. Pay attention in champ select. I've won games based solely on the fact that I paid attention to what the enemy picked in champ select. They pick Lee Sin, I go poppy and Lollistomp them. They pick Rammus, I take Diana and Moonlight his way to the other side. So always pay attention.

  2. Know the patterns of the jungler you are up against. Do they start at Krugs or Frog. Ward if you have to but you need to know their routines. This also includes watching them after a gank. If they don't b and go in jungle, go after them. Chances are you get a kill or force a flash which is good. If you don't know where the jungler is, ask the last lane he ganked and work your way from there.

  3. Change YOUR patterns. Lool. Yes. Don't follow mainstream patterns like after frogs, go blue. Nah. I love Kindred and I usually end up against a Lee Sin. If I do blue after, I'm an easy target so I do wolves instead. Then collect mark on Crab or Raptors, then I do blue. That way Lee can't kill me or if he tries, I end up killing him. So try switching it up a bit to keep the enemy jungler guessing.

  4. Never gank when your gut tells you not to. It's a crude method but it's effective most of the time for me. Think before ganking. Don't waste time ganking a lane if it doesn't guarantee a kill or use of summoners. Try to sweep the brush or in the case of mid lane, gank from the side of the brush.

  5. Know when to smite. If you are using Chilling or Challenging smite, you need to have one charge of smite available in case of ganks or duels. They may just help you survive and win the duel. Know WHAT to smite. Low on HP, smite red. Want to give blue buff to mid lane and continue jungling? Smite blue. Need to avoid counterjungle in one part of your jungle, smite wolves for vision or smite Raptors to remove one or two pesky wards. Need to survive clearing jungle early without using smite, Smite krugs for the stun. Now if you get krugs and go for a gank, if it is successful, use the buff on a turret. Helps take down turrets pretty fast.

That's about it. I might have left some out, I mean it's 2 am here but if you have any other tips or you want to modify one of mine, just tell me what it is. ^^

Don't gank for a feeding laner. If they are feeding then they obviously do not have the skill set or mechanics to do anything for your team. Camp the lane that is ahead for the best chance of getting carried.

Also, as a jungler one of the most important things is to have full control over the game. learn pressure.

Or, they are in a really bad matchup/getting camped. In my experience, leaving the losing lane to rot has lost me more games than its won me

Quite true especially if the losing lane is bot.

Camp the lane that is ahead for the best chance of getting carried. I don't think camping is the best method. I usually gank a lane and give my teammate 1 or 2 kills to get them going and them go to help the weaker ones. Also, what I do is, once a teammate has died twice while I'm ganking other lanes, I go there and try to give them a kill to reduce the pressure on me for ganks.

So what do you when you get counter jungled and you lose your camps? I also have two worst case scenarios I should ask you. What do you do if you get invaded by the whole enemy team while you are waiting for jungle camps to spawn around the time minions spawn? What do you do when all lanes are feeding and there doesn't seem to be an "anchor" (a term coined by jungle main Stonewall008) or a teammate who is reliable enough to collaborate with?

I'd also like to know the general answer to the first question. That happened in my last jungle game where I was jungling Udyr and they brought in four to take my blue buff: Thresh, MF, Nid, and Zyra (their jungler). We had three, Jinx, Sona and me, as our mid Zed stayed mid. Everyone danced around for a little bit. for 10-15 seconds after the minions spawned. Eventually, I decided not to contest and let them have my blue because we weren't likely to win the fight and feeding them gold is worse than losing a blue. Udyr's pretty resilient in any event, so I went to the other side of the jungle and began there.

After the match, I realised I could have immediately tried to snag Zyra's blue, but I would have lost more time and XP due to all the running around and if they warded their buffs, could have gotten caught out. We ended up winning the game, but I'm still wondering if I made the right call and how to approach situations like that. I'm fairly new to jungling, and I'm not very good at it, so I'd appreciate any insight.

Zyra jungle? Quite rare. Now first of all, you made the right call leaving your blue to them. Now losing time and XP? As a jungler xp isn't really an issue. The passive on the jungle items help with that. Also when you are ganking a lane or sitting in a brush to gank a lane, you get xp when any minion dies so that's covered. Don't worry about wards also. Wards last 60 sec. Supposing Zyra's teammates warded her blue by 1:40, by the time you clear the Red Buff side of your jungle, the ward has expired so you can take the blue buff. Take precautions tho, like warding over the wall of her blue and leashing the blue closer to the river for a speedy getaway. That usually works. Hope I answered you question. ^^

Thanks a lot for that question. Forgot to add that. I kinda talked about counterjungling but wasn't specific. If you are afraid of getting counterjungled, ward strategic brushes or smite wolf for vision buff. If you have already been counterjungled, move to the diagonal opposite side of the enemy jungle and farm up. They usually haven't farmed the camp there.

Now for the first scenario, try telling your teammates to help you. If they can't, go to the other side of your jungle and take the buff there, then proceed to the opposite side of the enemy jungle and take their buff. Makes it even out.

Second scenario, to be honest, the game seems lost but since I don't advice anyone to surrender, look for the lane that is easiest to gank. This depends on the jungler you are using so the decision varies. If you use lee for example, Top and Mid and pretty much the easiest cos you can't be beaten except their enemy counterganks. If you can't find a good lane, just play your best and try to gank whenever it's possible but not to the detriment of yourself.
