How do i counter Riven

soo i am just now getting better at top and yesterday i ended up in a game playing jayce VS riv top lane and i admit i am not that experienced with jayce but the results where surprising. i couldn't even touch her. so first i tried passive farm poke you know normal top lane stuff but after she reached lvl 3 she every time i try to poke she can just Q shield it away so i tried picking up cloth armor and playing REALLY passive but by then she could dive and kill me at 6

what in game weaknesses does riv have? what champions counter her?

tank irelia destroys her

max stun

stun riven on like a 6 second cooldown

get deadmans first. and i like botrk second. frontline full tank irelia + botrk imo is better than tirforce irelia. you dont have to dive their backline just destroy the frontline with true damage + botrk damage and be your teams tank while stunning their tanks and peeling for your adc

flask + potions start. teleport for healing and coming back to lane with items

dont start a camp. go to lane and just farm. tp back to lane with items when your low

stun riven whenever she goes in. passive farm

-) Bait. She has easily abusable cooldowns early game, if you can get her to burn any of them, that typically lets you play more agressive.

-) I know people are going to say poke, great idea but just remember how strong her all-in is. Safety > poke.

-) I'd also suggest tanks over fighters, since tanks can typically trade with her well, and have some passive healing. I've had respectable success with Maokai, Malphite, Renekton, Darius, Garen... you get the idea.

Riven has a lot of power if she can get on top of you for free, if she needs to use 2-3 Q charges to gap close to you then her damage will be more reliant on her auto attacks, as Jayce you can swap to hammer form and hit her away as she tries to engage.

If you are looking for counter champions then Renekton can out sustain her and out trade her early, so you can shut her down in lane, Quinn can negate almost all of Rivens damage, just poke with autos and save E for when she tries to get on you, she can't really do much unless she flashes on top of you. Darius and Garen do well vs her but are always banned. Olaf is supposed to be pretty good vs her but I've heard this is still a skill match up. Shyvana can get to a point where Riven can't kill her quickly enough but she still deals heavy damage to Riven. Cho'Gath can shut down her combo with his scream, and gets too tanky to quickly kill, also he can out sustain Riven with his passive. Top lane Udyr can also work, since he can build somewhat defensive and still deal heavy damage in trades, also his W will help him negate damage and sustain.

There is also the option I pick in a lot of match ups on certain champions that scale really well, focus on farm, play back so they can't all in you and out scale her. I do this as Vlad, basically just AFK farm, and pretty much ignore the Riven unless she's trying to all in you, play way back if W is on cool down. I do the same thing on Katarina, get the farm that I can, wait for an opportunity to either 2v1 with the jungler, kill them if they are bad or roam to side lanes.

Make sure she has 0 kills throughout the entire game or else just prepare for the worst.

Fiddle does really well in my experience. Rivens always engage, and fear-drain wrecks her when she tries to engage, then silence after so she can't re-engage while you back off a little if she tries to get back on you.

I build typical ap mid items because you can out sustain her so hard you don't really need to get a lot of defence. Mana regen important though.

Your only real problem is kinda weak waveclear, but that helps you stay on your side of lane which is important for fiddle top since he is venerable to ganks.

One thing I noticed about Riven is that she tends to have to go all in to get kills early on. I recommend baiting out a combo then going in for a decent amount of damage.

Of course, I'm not an expert, I'm a rather subpar teacher and I can't say I've played Jayce as of yet, so I wouldn't put too much stock into what I have to say. Just throwin things out there.
