Is there an anti hook support?

HalexUwU·12/24/2019, 2:02:32 AM·15 votes·11,799 views

What I mean by this is, a support who can get hooked and has an atleast 50/50 change to win a trade with the enemy support. The only real option I can think of for this would be Taric, who has a long stun and a ton of defense.

Other than that I'm not quite sure. I get that skillshots should be rewarded but I feel like being hooked by a Blitz, Naut, or Thresh is death/flash almost all of the time. So I decided to come up with some hook nerfs/support buffs

Janna can now release (not start) her tornado during stuns, this would reward a smart janna player who pre-emptively started a tornado to save herself/adc or, it rewards her for baiting the enemy to hook her

Nami can still use her damage booster while stunned, the extra movement speed and damage might help someone escape

And that's about all I can think of, any other suggestions would be appreciated

Leona Alistar pretty much you hooking them means they have even easier access to the enemy ADC. You don't want squishy champions to be hooked. Tanky ones will be more than fine and sometimes is even preferable since then they have easier access to their preferred targets.

Morgana. But anyone playing a engage based champion will ban her every time because she is their only really counter now.

Pyke and Rakan can use their mobility to avoid hooks or escape after cc from hook is over.

#Spoiler - This is a detailed post! I put a fair bit of time into this post and it still isn't an exhaustive list. It's likely worth a read though even if the information is somewhat basic for seasoned Bottom and Support players

#Quick Detail: Some hook champions theoretically counter other hook champions, such as Blitzcrank beating Thresh due to longer hook range and being able to hook Thresh while he's stuck in place winding up his own hook. Thresh's lantern also can be a decent counter to most engages as it provides a pretty reliable escape for his allies.

Beyond that, there are a plenty of counters to hook champions:

#Traditional / Direct / Popular Counters: Morgana Morgana

  • The most obvious counter. Between her Dark Binding (Q) and Black Shield (E) she's a pretty awful matchup for most engage based champions. She's banned very often due to this though, so I won't dwell on her long. Alistar Alistar
  • Not a very popular champ at the moment, but Alistar is designed to be pulled into the enemy team (his Headbutt (W) does exactly that, so he doesn't mind the enemy team doing the work for him!). His ult allows him to escape any hard CC and allows him to survive in the middle of the enemy team with his massive damage reduction. Leona Leona
  • Her W makes her incredibly tanky and she will certainly engage on the carries of your team if you pull her in. She also can engage through minions, whereas hook champions are unable to do that. Soraka Soraka
  • Enchanters can poke semi tanky hook champions out of lane with their superior range and zoning abilities. Soraka can relentlessly poke with her Q and she also has the benefit of having an AoE silence on her E which will prevent enemies from even having a chance at casting their hook!

#Secondary Counters: Sona Sona

  • Sona can out poke enemy hook champions if she positions well (behind / inside of minion wave or out of hook range as her Q range is surprisingly long). Sona's R can also turn the fight or deny the enemy a chance to properly follow up on an engage if Sona is not the champion engaged upon. She also scales incredibly well, so playing the long game with her on the opposing team usually isn't too pleasant looking of an option. Pyke Pyke
  • His hook is more slim than any other hook champion (most notably Nautilus, but this applies to Blitzcrank and Thresh as well to a lesser degree). While difficult, it is possible to skirt your hook by a minion while the opposing hook champion ends up grabbing a minion. Beyond that, Pyke is incredibly slippery and has a ton of built in sustain so it's very hard to engage on him without any follow up CC to give your team time to burst him down! Rakan Rakan
  • He does have poke with his Q, but it's pretty underwhelming so I won't dwell on that. The biggest reason Rakan is a counter is because, like Alistar, Rakan thrives in the middle of the enemy team so that he can use his R and W to their fullest extent. Rakan also is quite slippery, as his E lets him dash out of danger from a surprisingly far range (and this is even more true if Xayah is on his team)! Taric Taric
  • He does eventually become quite tanky and he does have a fair bit of peel ability between his W shield and his E AoE stun, but he struggles with being bursted out too quickly in the early game sometimes. His R can be a decent way to engage on the enemy without fear of death later on so he's still a good pick, but be careful early game to not overestimate how tanky you are or forget that while you have access to tons of tools most of them have significant delays attached to them. Zilean Zilean
  • His Q can provide decent zone control and even can be an AoE stun if he lands both of his Qs. His E can make himself or his allies very fast which can make them harder to hit, or he can slow someone on the opposing team to thwart follow up to an engage. His R allows even squishy champions to "survive" being engaged upon as it grants them a free revive if they die within a short time period... but they might die as soon as they come out of the revive if the situation isn't dealt with! Just beware his high mana costs and low damage, especially early in the game.

#Non-Traditional Counters: Pantheon Pantheon

  • His poke with Q can really hurt and Pantheon's empowered E invulrunability combined with his W stun makes him fairly decent at taking an engage and then counter engaging on their carry (if need be). Struggles into later stages of the game however so I'd reckon you'll need to be aggressive in the early stages of the game by finding skirmishes that you can turn around. Poppy Poppy
  • While not a universal counter, her W now has a "ground" mechanic that will stop any enemy dash that passes through her W. This is particularly strong against Thresh, but it can be okay against Pyke and rarely make a difference versus Nautilus. Blitzcrank is unaffected by Poppy's W, but Blitzcrank will pull Poppy to him which might just give Poppy a great opportunity to use her E - Heroic Charge to stun an enemy into a wall or use her R - Keeper's Verdict to launch enemies away from her or an ally. Not the best counter, but she can be situationally good. Shaco Shaco
  • Not only does he have his boxes which are annoying for hook champions, but he also has a clone that can tank the hook if in a pinch. He also has invisibility and a short ranged blink on a very short cooldown. You also gain the benefit of the opposing bottomlane likely not knowing this matchup very well and being uneasy or cocky due to that. Heimerdinger Heimerdinger
  • His harass can be absurd and his turrets are a nightmare to navigate around to actually land a hook on top of the always present minion wave issue. Hook champions hate him. Zyra Zyra
  • Her plants are annoying as they get in the way of hooks too! However they don't live for very long and are quite hard to time to force them to be in the way of a hook, but occasionally you'll see a Zyra player make a hook support's life miserable. She also has quite a lot of peel between her E and R, although they are fairly slow so they might not make a difference if her ally is bursted out quickly once a hook successfully lands!

How the Carry can Counter Hook Champions:

Sivir Sivir

  • Has a spellshield. Note that some champions can still get closer to Sivir or have followup CC besides their hook even if she blocks the hook with her E! Notable threats include Thresh and Nautilus. Yasuo Yasuo
  • His WindWall (W) needs no introduction. While it has a fairly long cooldown, it's still a game changing ability much like Morgana's E - Black Shield. Xayah Xayah
  • Her feathers can stun enemies that run towards Xayah which can really disrupt follow up attempts to a successful engage, and Xayah's R is a get out of jail free card for nearly any engage while it's off it's moderately long cooldown (if properly used) as it makes her untargetable and lays down feathers to discourage anyone from continuing to walk towards her. Caitlyn Caitlyn
  • Her range is very long which makes it hard to engage on her (and gives Caitlyn more time to react to hooks). Caitlyn also has a Q to help her farm and poke from afar, an E dash to help her escape, and she can make walking towards her tricky with the traps on her W. Tristana Tristana
  • She can rocket jump away from many engages if timed will by using her W. Her R can also push away an engage. Her range will ramp up as the game goes on so she can become quite hard to engage upon. Ezreal Ezreal
  • A skilled Ezreal can (in theory) essentially avoid every hook with the blink on his E. In practice though, even a skilled Ezreal will sometimes fail to properly dodge a hook and inexperienced Ezreal players are even worse about this. Kalista Kalista
  • A truly skilled Kalista can kite and dodge dang near everything with her unique auto attack mechanics caused by her passive. She can also save an ally (most often her Support or Jungler) by using her R, and this can even provide a successful counter engage onto her opposition! Kalista requires a fair bit of cooperation though between two skilled players to function, however, which can be uncommon to find for most players (depends on your ELO and situation).

#Overrated Counters (Personal Opinion) Braum Braum

  • Lowkey a worse version of Rakan, but he does get the job done if you really need. He can escape with his W back to his allies, but it's much shorter than Rakan's E so it relies quite a bit on allied cooperation and understanding of what you want to do. His shield will stop the hook projectile just like any other projectile, but you know what else does? Every other champion when they are hooked by a hook champion too! Galio Galio
  • While not bad necessarily, his niche is anti-magic damage warden. Most bottom lane matchups are heavily physical damage oriented so Galio misses out on a lot of his kit's benefits. Also, his E - Justlice Punch is too short and too delayed to have the impact needed to turn around an engage or provide a good escape for Galio himself. His Q - Winds of War poke is admirable, but his W - Shield of Durand was his huge selling point for turning around engages. Since Galio can no longer flash while channeling Shield of Durand (as of time of writing, Patch 9.24) this is not quite as easy to do so he's not that great of a pick anymore, but he can get the job done if he must. Galio gets changed a lot though so perhaps his next iteration will be better for this type of situation? Syndra Syndra
  • Her poke damage is quite high and her Q + E combo can push away most engages (which is best for Thresh since he comes to you, rather than the other way around). She also has significant burst threat with her R, which is also especially effective versus Thresh as he primarily stacks armor with his souls and preferred itemization. She's an okay counter to other hook champions, but she's a really great counter to Thresh in particular.

There's more to say, but this post is already long. I think you'll get the idea.

Alistar Leona Morgana Soraka Are the primary anti-hook supports. Alistar's kit is literally designed to be pulled. Leona's CC and tankiness and pull to proximity of adc generally makes her a really bad champion to pull. Morgana E is obvious.

Soraka's a little more contrived but legit: E > Q on pull generally disables all puller followup skill casting, primes a move speed on land buff, and usually heals her far faster than the hook can hurt her. She can also just R after 2 parts of a puller's kit are used up and completely negate their 1 off chance to kill her.

Janna's only peel for pull is her R; I still consider her killable to pulls, because low HP, can't survive most support puller combos.

Nami usually cannot peel pulls, simply because her HP is one of the two lowest in the game, and buying any kind of HP generally makes her early kit worthless. Q is delayed, and hard to hit two targets on a pulll. W and R aren't reliable when pulled.

( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) Yasuo

Weiss Guertena12/24/2019, 2:11:54 AM2 votes

Morgana would probably be the closest. A hook suppoert needs a clear line between them and their target in order to hook, with that clear line also leaving them vulnerable to Morgana's Q. And only one of the two has a CC-negating shield.

Support Position12/24/2019, 6:55:05 AM2 votes

Morgana is the only one. Make sure your ping is 0-1. Otherwise you dont be blackshielding anything

Riot smiles

TendajiX12/24/2019, 9:49:15 PM2 votes

Morgana is the anti-hook/anti-cc champion. She's mandatory to have in your roster if you play support. You can't climb without some level of mastery on her. I don't even like the champ and I have lvl 7 mastery.

jocomotion12/24/2019, 10:07:30 PM2 votes

TahmKench can snatch people out from hooks. But you have to be quick to snatch them.

ChaosReyn12/24/2019, 10:03:48 AM2 votes

Morg, Braum, Leo and Ali are the top 4 "anti-hook" supports, imo. But another tricky one is actually Poppy.

She can W to deny Thresh's Q2 from pulling him all the way to its target, she can deny the follow-up E from Pyke, she can deny Naut's full gapclose, and she can just beat the shit out of anyone who hooks her instead of the ADC cause she'll just E them (or the enemy ADC) into a wall pretty much as soon as they pull her.

Kadexe12/24/2019, 7:31:07 PM2 votes

Morgana. She counters Thresh/Pyke/Blitzcrank so hard, that they often will ban her. They can't do anything about a reactive Black Shield.

Picking tanks also works because you can use their hook against them - they pull you and you get a free engage.

DaemonOfTheFal12/24/2019, 5:13:24 PM1 votes

I pray the enemy hooks me when I play Alistar , Galio or Poppy

3TWarrior12/24/2019, 6:16:40 PM1 votes

Morgana is a prime example, able to protect herself and her allies from a hook champion

her shield prevents against any source of crowd control until its magic damage is broken and it still prevents the crowd control even if the magic damage crowd control was enough to break it

Yaskamasandwich12/24/2019, 7:08:12 PM1 votes

I see a lot of people posting Leona, though ironically she is countered by Thresh. Thresh's flay shuts Leona down making sure she can't charge on his carry. Though she might do well against the other hook champs.

All in all it depends which hook champ you're facing because each one are different with strengths, weaknesses, and hard counters. Morgana is probably the only one that hard counters them all from level 1 to 18, since she can hard nope all hooks with one button. Top that off with even a bind them with her Q.

McKuntalds12/24/2019, 7:44:22 PM1 votes

Counterintuitive and probably biased but Volibear . If you or your adc gets hooked , you can run straight at theirs , lock them down, ignite and keep wailing until they back off or die .

This does require your adc to not be a puss though , because if they run you're dead or 10% hp without a flash .

Worked for me in s8 on an alt .

UF Dan12/24/2019, 8:12:43 PM1 votes

leona, braum alistar. Tank Supports that have good disengage or engage. Morgana, Lulu. Morgana cause spell shield, lulu cause she has polymorph disengage/re-engage. Lulu can poly adc before they have a chance to follow up on a hook and then both you and your adc hard-focuses the adc essentially making it a 2v1.

Asherenyx12/24/2019, 10:14:27 PM1 votes

Rakan - Is the general professional response due to having versatility in utility as well as making plays or disengaging on either side

Alistar - Relatively obvious Braum - Creates a turnaround relatively well if provided a decent adc, and the second professional choice Leona - This is one that can turn the whole trade by being pulled, or be pulled at a bad time and die Pyke - Difficult but manageable TahmKench - Can kill the hook champion solo, but can also save carry that was pulled as well as CC the champion who hooked them and create followup Taric - He just works into anything really Shen - You need a good player, but he can do it

morgana and tanks pretty much

Baby Ghoul12/24/2019, 2:14:21 AM1 votes

Leona is the best counter to hook supports in the current meta.

There's been lots of times where I've intentionally taken a hook for someone just so I could lock down the enemy ADC easier.

RyzeRework12/24/2019, 10:13:06 AM1 votes

TahmKench is really good into hook champions but you have to have the reaction for it. The best hook vs hook is blitz. He counters all the hook champions. Or any champion that wants to hard engage. The reason is if a support hooks your adc. You can lock down the enemy adc longer than a hook champion and cc your adc

back in the day when life was simple (before season 6) it used to be leona, ali and other pure cc tanks. you just stand in front of your adc, get hooked and jump on the enemy adc.

Alistar

NelsieLisnen12/24/2019, 1:07:47 PM1 votes

Morgana

  • Am I a joke to you?
Sire Hippington12/24/2019, 1:14:30 PM1 votes

Alistar pre 6 it can be rough after the bse hp nerfs he recived a while back, but once he has ult he can turn hooks into his own engages.

Braum Used to be a good answer, not sure if he still is in the current state

Leona If you have the stronger early game adc or are already ahead, she can turn it around rather well. If you don't, her lack of escapes usually means she's gone.

Rammus Unusuall support, but actually works as a counter to hooks

Galio like Tarik, he should work in theory, but i have no idea i he actually is durable enough to do so right now

There are some that shouldn't get hooked them self but have good tools to bail out alies: Morgana black shield is still the best counter to prettymuch anything Lulu shield, ult and speedbuff, if she doesn't get you out alive, no one does. Soraka her healing is quite potent on low targets, and the instant silence really can screw any followup from the enemie adc unless it's a pure rightclick bot(which few are early on)

Fight fire with fire: Brand Lux Velkoz Swain

Exept for swain post 6, non of them wants to be hooked. However, hooksupports are shortranged and with no sustain, so you can easily controll the lane and keep them poked low, and you offer so much damage that if your adc gets hooked, you usually get atleast 1 counterkill, if not 2.

DarkDeamonDragon12/24/2019, 3:13:34 PM1 votes

If you're looking for something off meta try MonkeyKing. Position so the clone takes the hook and when you hit 6 go in on the adc with the E>Q>R combo.

PopcornBunni12/24/2019, 3:26:08 PM1 votes

Nautilus beats other hooks if they grab him.

Wardens as a general class are also decent -- Shen Galio Poppy, TahmKench and Braum depending on their runes.

Maokai could be worth trying since he'll heal off a lot of their pull damage and has close range advantage while preventing them from camping brushes.

Rakan has an easy back to his lane partner and is one of the hardest characters in the game to punish for being out of position in general.

Less of a typical support, but you could try body blocking hooks with Heimerdinger turrets as well.

Kuthillick12/24/2019, 4:02:30 PM1 votes

Everyone is missing the obvious one here:

The donger. Heimerdinger Just drop a turret in front of the hook.

HA I am Shaco HA12/24/2019, 4:31:42 PM1 votes

Shaco is absolutely amazing at dealing with hook supports, in fact it's his best matchup. Since they'll jump into his boxes if they hook him or the adc, the fear will give you and your adc the chance to maul the enemy.

Wolfeur12/24/2019, 4:33:54 PM1 votes

Any all-in support is happy with being grabbed
