What is the point of ranked reset?

All it does is unbalance matchmaking.

All year people play to get to their true MMR and then you mix it all up again making early season a nightmare with inconsistent games. A gold player that had lucky placements gets put in a game full of S5 diamonds and just gets stomped. There is no reason to believe that the gold player is suddenly capable of playing at a diamond level because of good placement matches. Games aren't being decided by who makes the better plays or does better overall - they are being decided by who gets the most players that are playing way outside of their league.

I know EVENTUALLY this will all balance out and everyone will climb and fall to their true skill level - but do we really need to endure a headache for a month in the process?

the problem you dont see is that this moves people that should have been demoted because they are not good enough to be at their elo's so that that layer in every elo "silver 5, gold 5, plat 5, diamond 5" resets to make more people end at their proper elo.

They should just make it so people can demote easier, instead of needing p4 mmr to drop out of d5 it should be p2 mmr. Drops should be easier - period. This reset has nothing to do with dropping people that are where they don't deserve. The matches are completely lopsided Every Single Game because there are golds in games with diamonds and every single time this happens the gold can pretty much be reported for intentionally feeding because of how hard they get stomped. It doesn't matter how good you are, if you have a 600 GPM but the enemy team has 2-3 players with 800-900 GPM because they are being spoonfed gold by people completely ou of their league - skill no longer matters.

tl;dr Ranked Reset = Lucky games instead of skillful games.

There is no 'luck'. Your new MMR = (your old MMR) x (a certain % depend on the provisional).

You might gain some, or lose some, but does not bring you from 1500 to 500. If the drop is large enough, the difference in skill is noticable and you should have no problem facerolling people to move up.

If you do not seem to destroy every game, everyone else must be at the same skill level and have the same MMR. i.e. you are where you belong.

Playing with skilled players are valuable experiences, but if you do not want to match with them whatsoever, wait a couple of weeks for them to move up in ranks and 'lucky' people to move down.

Maybe this is true for the low elo plebs/casuals, but at higher elo the games are luck because the skill difference between the teams can be pretty big. I know this from EXPERIENCE, so please don't post with assumptions.

I think the ranked reset is necessary but is poorly done.

Full disclosure: That's my opinion from what I've read and before I've experienced it myself - last season was my first season of ranked (promoted to gold 5 thanks to around an 80% win rate over my last 20 games or so) and i won't be doing placements for another few weeks at least.

Anyways, here's what i know: Maximum reset rank is platinum 1 - people in diamond to challenger are all grouped to the same level, which is ridiculous. It's possible to go 10-0 in placements (or frankly even 6-4) and end up at bronze 5. Given the "reset" should bring people towards the average, anyone below silver towards silver 5 or 4 should theoretically improve. If your mmr is so low you're guaranteed bronze 5 it should just say that and let that 9-1 record get you promoted to bronze 4.

People don't know their mmr and don't understand what's happening behind the scenes during the reset. Riot doesn't need to share everything, but it could be a lot better. At the end of your placements Riot could show the player: you were ranked X before the reset, your mmr was (below / approximately at / above ) this rank. The reset gave your previous rank (y% to y+10%) credibility. You started placements at rank Z and then show what rank you were considered after each match.

E.g. for myself (theoretical, i haven't played any games) Finished rank gold 5 Were approximately at this mmr You played 68 ranked games so your history received only 40-50% credibility. Reset brought you to rank silver 2. Game 1 - win, silver 2 Game 2 - win, silver 1 Game 3 - win, silver 1 Game 4 - loss, silver 1 Game 5 - win, silver 1 Game 6- win, gold 5 Game 7 - loss, silver 1 Game 8 - win, silver 1 Game 9 - win, gold 5 Game 10 - loss, placed silver 1 out of placements.

So instead of going 7-3 in placements and feeling cheated being at silver 1 0LP, since i had been gold 5 and thought i had gold 3 mmr and did well in placements, i instead understand how i ended up at silver 1 and can clearly see that i could have placed in gold 5 but lost some key games (never won a game when at gold 5).

I think riot would still have their secret system but players would understand how it all worked really clearly.

Yea the placement system is wonky, I went 4-6 and placed P2. This post isn't about placements as in the intial 10 games, this post is about the games that follow for the next month while everyone climb/falls to their true elo. Games at high elo become very lopsided if you have 3-4 people that are destined to climb back to diamond quickly and the other team has 3-4 that did well in placements but are destined to drop down to low to mid plat., or sometimes even the occasional one that lands around G2 G1 end of season.

It isn't their fault they ruined the games for others, but they were forced to play way above their skill range.

The whole tier system is just a way to get you to play more. I suppose in some way, it could work to slow down boosters, but I highly doubt that was the reasoning for the system. If you start to improve rapidly, your MMR will increase a lot faster than your rank; you have to play more to actually get your rank to reflect how good you are at the game. Ranked resets do something similar; it's a "soft" reset on your accomplishments from last season so you have to do it all over again (ie. play more).

No, you can play non-ranked for a month, go outside, find another game, .... There's really far too many things to list that you could do in one month.

New Season to test your skills to see if you are still capable of climbing under the new changes. :o

when your gold 2 from d5 and on a 13 winning streak playing vs other diamond 5s/3s and you're still not skipping . :) when all of your friends are stuck in plat 4 and 3 because the elo is a cluster fuck of season 5 masters and diamond 1s.

They do it to make their player base angry. Just like champion reworks.

Angry players make better customers, they must think.
