Rune Stats!!! STRATEGIC or UNNECESSARY?
*This post is a critique with possible solutions! Please take some time and consider for yourself whether these problems or solutions are valid! *
I see two important problems with this system. (Note: this is speculation)

It actually kills variety. The ability to pick which stat you want forces you to slave in a match up. I think this will only result in making certain lanes harder for certain matchups because they are early game orientated only. Champions with poor early games will suffer to those with a superior laning phase. To combat this, the champions with poor early games will just get defensive stats that counter their laner. I think this is going to be tough to balance because Riot will have to favor one or the other. Since Riot is choosing which side gets the advantage, it kills the variety anyways. Riot is creating the meta.

Even if Riot manages to find ideal stats that make us able to influence the game, there will be an internal struggle to find balance in how much control each player gets to use with the runes. If they make the runes too weak, then the influence is lost, and the system fails. If they make them too strong then match ups will be based mostly on these stats and less on individual skill.
I have two solutions to this problem. >EITHER: Remove the system entirely. Make individual champions have their own stats. This makes the game easier to balance, but may sacrifice some of the players influence. In this solution items are the stats. You buy items, you get thee kind of build you want.
>OR: Give it more variety! These stats alone aren't going to make players influence their games in creative and meaningful ways! If you want League to be a game of strategy and skill we need variation that caters to champions in general! This isn't a specific solution but the groundworks for making it work!
Thank you Riot! I really love League and I enjoy it sincerely! I hope that we can get it to a point to where it is even more strategic!
