The current state of Tanks

Let's be real for a second. I want to have Riot attention on this matter because i like playing big tanks and right now it's almost impossible.

Tanks were already in a bad spot by the end of season 5, and if things don't change they are in a even worse spot now.

The new AD items combined with the new ADC mecanics and masteries leave little options for tanks, and it feels bad to build tons of armor and health just to get blow up in 4 shot.

Unless you have a super good early game, you will never catch up as a tank right now.

Why do i like playing tanks? I really like to play the "engaging" tanks, those wall of meat that are super good at engaging and causing a mess in the enmy backlines. I'm talking about dudes like Zac, Sion, Sejuani, Volibear.... long time ago you could do your job as a tank allright (i'm not talking about when tanks were op), if you did the right engage you could take massive amounts of damage while setting up your team in the best way possible, but if you failed you would just die, wich is okay. As of now even if you do let's say a perfect engage with Sion there are SO MANY % health shreds, Armor shreds, Healings reductions that you will 75% of the times commit for a suicide as a tank.

Not only that but Tanks were completely eclipsed by juggernauts, because yes they can have less engaging tools but... come on.... Dudes like Darius and Garen take the same (IF NOT MORE!!!) damage then a full tank Dr.Mundo while killing off a target for half of his health. Then why having tanks in the first place.

Wanna hear a fun story? I am heavily addicted to playing rankeds to climb up in this game, and i wanted to reach Platinum by the end of the season. I mainly play Support and Top, and guess what. I like playing anks in toplane: Sion, Tahm kench, Mundo. I couldn't be impactful as i wanted, in the end i was irrelevant by the end of the game. I decided i had to start picking up the Juggernauts to be succesful in that lane to have a chance, I choose Garen as a go to pick for the toplane. End of the story? 70% winrate with Garen and got my platinum promotion. Yeah cool, im very happy about that, but it's proof of what i said.

TANKS ARE IRRELEVANT.

For this pre season i will say soemthing i like that is the Resolve mastery Tree, it's the only mastery tree where you actually have meaningful choices to do to be tanky as you want. But that's it it doesnt help too much with all the things i mentioned above.

Riot i demand justice and an answer on this topic, since it seems like you dodge this kind of questions.

I don't think tanks are supposed to be late game champions. That's why they enforced "Juggernauts" as a separate role.

Edit: As I'm looking through champion.gg, quite a few tanks have a positive winrate after 40 minutes. Ammumu, Zac, Sejuani, Rammus, Nautilus...

This is kinda eh, actually. It seems half and half.

WHAT? As much as what happens with marksmen, they are entirely dependent on getting items, so FOR SURE they are supposed to be late game champs

Juggernaut category is more of a try to lay down a plan for the future rework of bruisers, which Rioters have been stated to be the most difficult category to balance

No wonder people always complain about tanks, then. The enemy marksmen would need to be absolute shit for the tank to get more gold than them.

Change that and tanks will be fine.

The tank does not have to get more gold than them, tbh, just enough to not be left too much behind in term of items and overall impact on game

The fact is, marksmen are still supposed to scale a bit earlier than tanks. Once marksmen get damage and As, then they are supposed to have reached a first powerspike, to then round up the build and reach that final powerspike given by the fact that they are the damage dealers non gated by resources. Tanks need to scale first to just not get istantly deleted by the main source of enemy damage dealer just as if they were squishies with terribad damage, and then they are supposed to become corenerstone for the very team and very difficult to kill frontile to enhance their allies

To say that tanks aren't supposed to be late game champs is idiotic, what they are supposed to be then, idiotic no damage little less squishy champs put there just to be an higher challenge for players, givent that in no way they should be supposed to work in early to mid game?

It's also a problem than games don't last long enough for full-build to happen even for marksmen. They get gold, they get it quickly, and their items are more efficient than tank items.

Yeha right now every game is a snowball party

The problem is that the snowball mechanics penalize terribad decision making by a team, given that is even more difficult to defend the squishier turrets, and now that there is the preseason and everyone is playing around with the new items/masteries/champ reworks you would feel even more than what you'll do during the season this thing

The problem is that tanks are supposed to be lategame, because they are hevily dependent on tanky items more then anything, (kinda like marksmen), Right now reaching that spot is... not possible in a secent way

I can't say I agree. I mean, if they are known for a lackluster early game (Mundo specifically is very bad in lane pre-6, and Ramus is so bad in it he isn't even played there, same with Amumu), and if you say "they aren't supposed to be lategame", what does that leave you with? Being a CC bot for 15 minutes of the game?

Simply put, the reason why tanks get no love is because damage is so prevalent in LoL, causing the value of CC to skyrocket, leading to less CC, leading to less tanks. They get less of EVERYTHING apart from defense because of power of their utility to let the rest of your team clean up, making playign them severely unfun as all your impact directly relies on someone else.

Late game? Heck there is no late game anymore. Most games end before any player is half-built, and even at that point, adc's are already blowing up "early game" tanks. Tanks suck early, and if they have the chance to reach late game, they suck then too. This whole meta shift is mind-boggling, and absurd.

Which Masteries are you trying? Some of them make you a dangerously offensive force by building defensively.

i'm still experimnting with those honestly, i still don't have a perfect pitch on whats best on that topic

I'd recommend grasp of the undying for Sion.

I only played once with it (so grain of salt and stuff) but I completely farmed the enemy Garen and their Diana jungler.

I felt Sion got a lot stronger. I could clear minion waves easier.

Didn't try that yet, gonna try it tho

Coming from someone who mained tank for three seasons, I agree! Preach! I found it harder and harder to continue playing the tank role, so I had to conform to the meta. It's rare that a player's position becomes SO IRRELEVANT that they change the position all together. :/

I'm hoping to have a Riot answer to this

Me too. 4 of my top 5 mastery supports are tanks, and they are all completely unplayable right now. Tanks and turrets are useless and made of tissue paper right now.

Tanks in the current meta are... varied. Tanks meant to be brick walls and engage on the front line (Sejuani, Sion, Rammus) tend to have trouble because that lets the carries wail on them and it's pretty bad. On the other hand, tanks that dive the backline (Shen, Malphite, Zac) or peel for the carries (Taric, Alistar, Braum) tend to be pretty good because the game revolves a lot around the carries now.

In general, tanks are kind of in a strange spot. But the tank-busting items have not proven to be as oppressive as they thought.

Shen is easy to play top right now, if you go full tank you can actually do well against the nuggernauts or anyone for that matter. I really hope they don't make him an assassin, he's like the only viable true tank atm.

One day, Shenpai will notice me...

Tanks always get the worst of both worlds. Weak early and Weak late, no snowball potential, extremely team dependent. Rito also makes way more fighters, mages and adc than true tanks.
