http://www.leagueofgraphs.com/rankings/rank-distribution/euw (this is EUW, but is about the same in NA)
your league is a reflection of your mmr. Hitting silver after 3 months of playing is definitely not bad
though it's all about perception, to a challenger player, diamond players are bad to gold player, diamond players are gods
Just keep playing and improving, there's no need to worry about what rank you are since you do not play league at a professional level.
I would say most players start thinking of players not being bad anymore at a high gold/platinum ranking, which equals to roughly 10% of the best players per region.
Honestly, if you crack Gold V on NA (only 30% of the player base is in gold) you are probably decent at the game.
If you get in Gold, play in Gold, and stay in Gold that is a better testament to your skill than merely achieving Gold V. Getting to Gold IV and Gold III or higher you are probably "good" at the game. Some players get to Gold V and stop, but many of them do not test whether they can stay in Gold.
Most players in silver are all OK to not very good at the game. Silver is huge division and there is a significant variance in skill among the players. Many players have "an idea" on what they are suppose to do, but have a hard time executing. This is probably why they stay in Silver, bad habits, lack of mechanical skill, minor but frequent mistakes, etc. all add up.
Bronze is honestly...anybody. I have noticed that players in Bronze lack strategies to win games and they are not very good mechanically. Some Bronze players are comparable to silver players in skill, but for some reason. will win fewer games.
Most players in the ladder system can climb to Gold if they did a few things:
That's it. I don't think it is too hard. I sometimes write up responses to lower elo players that want advice to get better and post here.
Almost every time I look up their stats the player plays anywhere from 10 to 20 champions regularly in ranked and they almost ALWAYS play 4 different roles in ranked.
Literally play 2 roles and no more than 8 champions and you can climb.
Being mediocre across a large champion pool doesn't really help one climb as being "good" with 3 or 4 champions.

So true. I got out of Bronze by playing nothing but Kayle. People underestimate the huge advantage they can gain by understanding a single champ more deeply than their opponents understand theirs.
