Training mode - Allow players to use any champion, any skin

TheEdgeOfDestiny··33 votes·4,114 views

Apart from ability and mechanics learning training mode can give players possibility to try a certain champ* or to check and see a certain skin in detail.

*useful for newer players that want to get a champion but not sure which one, especially useful if they were not in free rotation recently

Not everyone has access.

Also, it's kind of unplayable for anyone outside of NA. They can expect 100-150ms ping minimum. Not sure how much that matters if you are just playing custom games.

I did used to use it to test skins, back when I had access.

Everyone who wants access can get it though.

no

I've never once heard of them denying someone access to the beta. You might have to wait for them to process your request, but you'll definitely still get access. Riot is not in the habit of turning down free beta testers. Clearly all they care about is money anyways.

Mighty Mortein3 votes

You realize not every server has access to the PBE, right? OCE is just one of them. Don't have such a narrow view.

MonkeyMadness1 votes

LOL narrow view? Learn what that entails before you make such self-righteous insults.

DeathBot6668 votes

Although back on topic, not everyone can get in the PBE. I sent in my request about a year ago and I still haven't been accepted. (And before you ask, I have never been given anything more serious than the occasional leaverbuster), so not everyone can get in.

my friend was accepted after 2 and a half years, so i think it just takes a while... a long while

No. I think they populate PBE with different hardware compositions. So if you're not in wanted niche - you won't get access.

Supreme Senpai692 votes

I've applied like four times. But like Graves, no cigar.

MonkeyMadness1 votes

Well idk what to tell you then. I've never been rejected nor do I know anyone that's been rejected. Perhaps because I've been an active player for 5 years?

TheEdgeOfDestiny1 votes

Neh. I know there are people that play less. Riot uses PBE to test stuff before release (apart from other reasons). So they need a variety of hardware to test this stuff on. If you're saying you were getting PBE access consistently that means you have a specific set of hardware that is not common on PBE server.

MonkeyMadness1 votes

I have always had a decent laptop for the time (I upgraded ~2 years ago to a rather high end machine that is now pretty standard in terms of specs, but still a laptop). Where are you getting this info, I have literally never heard of this. Also, please keep in mind that until roughly 2 years ago (maybe 2.5, not entirely sure) the pbe was entirely open. Anyone could download and anyone could play it (at least in NA). The only weird part was that you were only allowed to create accounts on specific dates, but this was mainly to prevent trolls from having easy access.

TheEdgeOfDestiny1 votes

I'm a programmer. Also been a behind the scene game tester. Apart from PR such environments are created to test how software will run on different hardware (since there is no possible way to cover everything with inhouse resources). I don't think Riot is much different from other gamedev companies in this sense.

TheEdgeOfDestiny1 votes

Nope. I asked for access a year ago and didn't get it. Now I don't want it. :D

GayFluffyUnicorn1 votes

That would be a dream ping. Back in season 3/4 when i consistently joined PBE i usually had around 200 MS which sucks :(

TheEdgeOfDestiny1 votes

You need access. PBE content changes and has bugs.

A better idea would be when clicking on a champion and looking at their skins- have the model pop up when on the specific skin. No reason to stuff that into a training mode.

That said- Co-Op vs AI is a fine training mode for learning champions.

You're restricted by cooldowns in co op vs AI. How are you going to practice Lee Sin Kick -> Flash efficiently if you need to wait minutes before you can try it again? Practice mode, a 0 cooldown environment, is a way to practice with time efficiency.

Clicking on champion's and being able to view skins is a good idea though.

SociopathFriend1 votes

How are you going to practice Lee Sin Kick -> Flash efficiently if you need to wait minutes before you can try it again?

And how are you going to do this without an enemy present? If you have an enemy champion AI then you're pretty much right square back to Co-Op vs AI. No reason to have a bot just standing there when they could be helping you learn more of the game.

Also: LeeSin How are you going to be able to do it effectively in a real game if you're used to it having no consequence? Katarina How are you going to practice learning when you should and shouldn't channel without some form of enemy present? Lux How are you going to learn how to land skillshots without an enemy there to give some form of dodging? TahmKench How are you going to learn how to use your abilities to help other players without other players?

I'm just saying, it's fairly easy to learn playing against bots, I know several people who did just fine that way- but they STILL kinda fell apart when playing against actual people. I don't expect having an even more casual learning mode is going to make that even less of a problem. Ultimately, Riot kinda has a point, the best way to learn the game is to play it.

Umbra Ionia3 votes

You never played hots huh?

Aloexx Ratfoot1 votes

The same way you learn anything. By starting with the basics.

How does the champion differ from your normal champs (movement/atk speed).

How does the champs spells work, and what are the limits of those spells.

Where you need to be for certain things to work(wall hopping, flash casting etc)

There is a ton of things you can learn in a practice environment. Why do you think sports teams practice instead of having exhibition matches every day?

HideOnUrMomsBush2 votes

No, because Co-op vs AI does not have 100% cooldown reduction. I'm pretty sure you can insert dummy champions in training mode.

How are you going to be able to do it effectively in a real game if you're used to it having no consequence?

If your goal is to learn how to Kick-Flash on Lee Sin, then you should not be even focused on the consequences of a real game. It's called getting the basics down first, that is, the mechanical ability to even perform a Kick-Flash. Once it becomes muscle memory, you can then focus on one less thing in real games (screwing up the combo) and focus on the consequences.

Practicing dribbling is useless, because normally someone would be there playing defense! Better go practice dribbling in real games first. -Said no one ever.

How are you going to practice learning when you should and shouldn't channel without some form of enemy present?

No one is going to practice "when to use Katarina ult" in training mode. That's something you practice in real games. One might practice in which order to use Katarina spells for muscle memory though.

How are you going to learn how to land skillshots without an enemy there to give some form of dodging?

Again, this is not what training mode is for. Training mode is for learning champion specific mechanics.

How are you going to learn how to use your abilities to help other players without other players?

Again, not what training mode is for.

I'm just saying, it's fairly easy to learn playing against bots, I know several people who did just fine that way- but they STILL kinda fell apart when playing against actual people.

Learning champion specific mechanics does not mean you've learned all there is to the game. Champion mechanics is just one aspect of the game out of many that can be improved upon: minion wave control, matchup knowledge, ward control, map awareness, etc. etc. If you're playing against bots, of course you will not play well versus real people.

I don't expect having an even more casual learning mode is going to make that even less of a problem.

Well first you've completely misunderstood what training mode was for. Second, Practice mode is not even for casual people. Casual people will not care to learn to Kick-Flash in a desired direction on Lee Sin, they'll be content with just Flash-Kick because they don't need to execute their combos faster at unranked or lower elos. Casual people don't need to learn how to do the fast combo on Riven, they'll just hit spam QQQ or weave autoattacks in between Q's at a much slower pace. Casuals won't need to do one shot combos, such as the shy combo:

Ultimately, Riot kinda has a point, the best way to learn the game is to play it.

No, every high elo player recognizes the value of training mode. Riot did not have a point, which is why they admitted that they were wrong and they're finally giving us a training mode.

Yeh. Some sites have this feature. It feels somewhat disconnected. I think when you play with skin in conditions closer to real may feel more live.

AcidTheWarlock2 votes

Yeah, like Smite's Jungle Practice mode.

Pierce The Veal2 votes

There's already a skin rental system in hextech.

6Sfool4 votes

And if you actually rent a skin with the shards then you're a fool. I save them up and trade for orange essence to get the skins I really like.

My point is they wouldn't do it just because it already exists in that form.

TheEdgeOfDestiny1 votes

This rental feature is too greedy and too inconvenient to use. I'm pretty sure no one uses it. :)

Pierce The Veal1 votes

Yeah agreed. There is absolutely no reason to use it, and I feel bad for anyone who accidentally does, as that is the only way anyone would willingly use it.

TheEdgeOfDestiny1 votes

It requires you to have a specific shard. It requires you to have a specific champion. Shard disappears in 7 days.

It is completely useless. Actually they can remove this feature. I'm pretty sure noone uses it (except for accidental uses).

It's there to be a money sink so people get less actual skins and have to pay more RP.

Ariel the Cruel2 votes

But then they'd have to special case champions they don't want people knowing about from that mode too... Karma Yorick We haven't forgotten, Riot. ;p

(don't take this too seriously.)

6Sfool1 votes

I could go for that. Not sure what Riot would think of it, it might lose them money.

TheEdgeOfDestiny1 votes

You may look at this as a probe (or how it is called - things that offer stores in small quantities so that you may "taste" it).

aspects11 votes

if riot lets you "test" skins in live, the are going to lose a lot of profit and same with champions. maybe you think a certain champ is really op, so you want to get it, but if you test it and dont like it, riot loses profit. for just testing to see how a skin looks, look at skin spotlights on youtube

TheEdgeOfDestiny1 votes

Why you think so? Actually allowing players to "taste" skin in training mode may make player want it. It's different when you watch Skin Spotlight video and toy with skin yourself.

aspects11 votes

it also works the other way, say you really wanted a skin, because it looked really good when someone else played it, but then, you test it and dont like it as much, riot just lost profit

invisiblecat11 votes

Sounds nice, but do you REALLY think Riot is going to let people use any skin which costs real money for FREE? Not even them, but would tencent allow you to have paid things for free

TheEdgeOfDestiny1 votes

It's not the same when using skin in training mode and in game with other players. Like you're not allowed to used cheats (ability reset) in multiplayer games. Only reason why they may disallow them - if they fear bad reputation but recent skin quality is really good.

Allowing players to get a taste of skin may actually make them want it (and as a result sell more skins).
