what if veigar was basically given infinite mana? serious look at his kit

if veigar were given infinite mana tomorrow, he would be OP and right now, he is weak therefore, finding a middle ground between finite and inifnite mana should make veigar balanced. im just logically thinking about this here

this same argument can be applied to damage. if veigars ultimate was given +50,000 damage tomorrow, he would be not just viable, but extremely OP and right now, he is weak so therefore, finding a middle ground between +0 and +50,000 damage can be done to balance veigars kit and make him viable

using the above arguments, hypothetically virtually any change to a unviable champions kit can make that champion viable (or even OP) depending on the power/amount of that change. giving a ability +50,000 damage probably makes the champion OP, while giving the ability +1 damage probably changes nothing.

so with the above idea in mind. I think the coolest aspect to change about veigar to make him viable, may be his possive

what if veigars passive was changed to, pretty much, give him near infinite mana

of course, as explained above, infinite mana is OP. so im trying to find the middle ground here

with infinite mana, once you get 40% cooldown reduction you could endlessly spam all his spells nonstop.

with 40% cdr his stun has like a 8.4 second cooldown. so it may be hard to land, but with a dayum 8.4 second cooldown and infinite mana who cares? am i rite?

of course, true infinite mana would probably be OP. which means veigars current "bad kit" CAN become strong just by removing his mana gating.

if you remove ALL of veigars mana gating, he becomes OP. thus, i am trying to find the perfect amount of mana gating to remove to make veigar viable and b alanced

lets say we change veigars passive to say something like this: "restores 10% of missing mana every 5 seconds"

so with 1 rod of ages, thats like 1500 base mana at lvl18. so if your OOM thats 140 mana every 5 seconds

so thats 140 mana every 5 seconds with this new passive.

now what is veigars actual full throttled mana gate? lets see. veigars spells, used around the clock, i have not done the math, but looking at the numbers it seems with 40% cdr you would need near 500 mana every 5 seconds to ENDLESSLY, NONSTOP, use all of veigars spells every single time they come off cooldown

so that means giving veigar 500 mana every 5 seconds, would essentially give him "infinite mana". since he cant spend his mana fast enough with his spells to use it all

so. my new passive giving veigar 140 mana every 5 seconds. is that enough? or still too weak?

i think it may be too weak. maybe my passive idea should be changed to 20% of missing mana every 5 seconds. this way a veigar would have 280 mana every 5 seconds, which is about 60% of his maximum capability

anyway. my numbers and math may be off, but you get my point here. i think maybe reducing veigars mana gating may be the way to balance him

This is true, but Riot seems to hate tuning numbers and they avoid it whenever possible.

However, I am going to contradict myself because in this case I don't think tuning numbers would be the most optimal solution. The new mechanics make his kit almost brokenly terrible. You can't really land his stun without an ally CCing for you first. By extension, you can't really land Dark Matter by yourself. The only reliable usage for it is waveclear. So you give Veigar more mana? He can push better, which does technically make him a more viable pick. BUT is that what Veigar should be stronger at in order to be viable?

My point is, it should feel good to play his kit. It should feel rewarding to make good decisions with his abilities. The kit shouldn't feel mechanically broken, like you should feel like you can land your abilities by yourself. One of the most disempowering things is when you can't do that.
