Bronze playing in plat?

I'm bronze 4 support right now and I peaked last season at bronze 2, so I never really thought of myself as an outstanding player. But I just played a ranked game with a friend who was plat last season and we were put into a group of high Bronze/High silver summoners. It was a ranked game and I thought I was going to get crushed, but I held my own and actually came out of the game with an A. Why is it that when I play in bronze ranked games I do so poorly, but when I play games with my plat friend I seem to hold my own much better than I normally would. Why is this? And if the case is that I'm better than I think I am or I'm better than where I am placed, why am I still in bronze? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I would say its your mentality going in, im in silver, gold last season, and when i get into matches with bronzes im like pfft whatever these guys suck compared to me, and i end up playing like trash(which is why im still in silver honestly), but if im against golds and silvers i subconsciously play safer cause in my mind i see them as a threat.

You have a much better player handling the types of things most bronze players can't do, like shot calling and organizing the team.

Answer this: those games with your friend are usually a lot more coordinated for your team, the teamwork seems to be better than usual. Yes or no?

Yeah I'd have to say the teamwork is better. Not by a HUGE margin, but by enough for it to be noticeable

That's exactly what it is, you have one person capable of doing something critical that a lot of lower level players have difficulty with. Try picking his brain about why and how he does these things. Contrary to popular belief the most important skill to climb is not mechanics or anything, it's the ability to effectively function as part of a team / lead a team. Game knowledge and communication skills.

Well when I play against my bronze friend in a 3 v 3 on the howling abyss I pick blitzcrank and I abuse the shit out of him making him go 1 - 16.

Also 1/5 your team knew way more on what to do and how to play and so didnt feed so you were not 3 man ganked at 12m

Well the reason I believe you did better was because in bronze adc's never know wtf they are doing, and when you played higher elo ur adc knew how to punish the lane so you where able to have a better lane overall. Also the fact that you didn't know you were going against tough opponents was vital, because you had a positive mentality. If you knew you would be like gg it's over then start being a submissive bitch to their support.

With all this great information from you guys, my big question now is, if I am able to keep up with players who were in plat last season, how can I make it so I can climb out of bronze? (not necessarily to plat, but just out of bronze) Would you recommend continuing to duo with people who are in a higher elo? I know I should be taking what I learn in those games and applying them to lower ranked games, but being a support its hard for people to follow up on my actions or listen to my shot calls (which my plat friend compliments).

Absolutely. You can learn a ton by playing with a better player and then analyzing the game together after it's finished going through it piece by piece.

Because your plat friend picked up the slack of someone that would've been in bronze. Believe it or not he's making little decisions that can lead to bigger victories down the road. And it's hard to pick up on all these small things.
