Bored of losing to players 10 times better than me

Ramen226··60 votes·5,502 views

Normals is a shit show right now. Constantly being placed vs people who either destroy me or I destroy them and no in between. A few games ago the lobby had someone every rank from bronze to daimond. This is ridiculous. It punishes people who just wanna play league or just take a break from ranked. This has been going on since the beginning of season 6 with the introduction of this shitty matchmaking system. If a bronze wants to duo with someone from platinum whatever, but don't make me play against the platinum because that's just stupid.

Just a player tired of getting auto losses because the matchmaking system is based on a fallacy.

Edit: Just played a game that ended before 19 minutes. The diamond (previously masters) and both platinums completely obliterated us. Not even close

how do you fix that? lol

bronze + plat vs plat = sad bronze bronze + plat vs bronze = sad enemy bronze

They're trying to play with a friend who is at a level significantly above their skill level. You shouldn't punish 8 other people by giving them a bad experience in the game by having his friend be one of the only factors in the game. Forget playing against the good player for a second and think about the quality of game play you produce by mixing players with such distinctly varied skill levels. It inevitably becomes a crap show.

You wanna know the solution to where to place these players? Pair people who duo with players significantly better/worse them them with OTHER players who do the same thing. Don't punish players who duo with friends of similar skill or the solo queue players because of a decision someone else makes. Because right now the only place to play fair* matches is in ranked and I don't want to sucumb to the "not playing ranked to win" mentality because that's even worse.

MysterQ2 votes

Also at least pair the lanes correctly. Put the plat vs the other plat lane. Even if it is support, just extend their queue until a support comes out. In blind it is a different issue.

Starcraft243ver5 votes
  1. People will abuse it by swapping.
  2. MMR normal and ranked are different.
  3. Queue time over 9000.
MysterQ1 votes
  1. I thought of this. But unless they are queuing up falsely into roles, then it would be tougher to swap. I mean you can play a LeBlanc and go top, but that is going out of your way to ruin someone elses day. At least if the system pairs them fairly you can just play your assigned lane.
  2. I know.
  3. Maybe but a longer queue is worth it for more fun games.
Gorgiolio5 votes

I already have 5-6 minutes queues. If I had to start waiting challenger-master tier level times just for normals, I'd be rather sad.

paisy9 votes

Like whats the point of playing normals when everyone is playing their main, I ca't play different champs. That's why I stick with aram most of the time.

Automated Riven3 votes

I only play riven in normals cause I still suck with her.

Ramen2268 votes

I don't really mind players wanting to try their hardest to win. It's not my place to tell them how to play or how they should enjoy the game (for the most part.)

But when the diamond 2 Corki main is 5/0 at 5 minutes it gets a little irritating.

MedicalMisfit6 votes

Couldnt have said it better. Norms is hard to play in, or practice in for that matter when you get the random diamond or plats dropped in your games. hard to learn a new champ when you get stomped so hard

Exercise856 votes

I have responded to other threads about this. I hit level 30 less than 10 normals games ago, according to op.gg i am at a 25% win rate excluding aram over my last 20 games, and most of my games are populated with silver to plat players. I dont feel like i learn anything or get better when i first time a role or champ as a fresh 30 into a gold or plat. I would happily triple the wait time for a game if it ment that i could get a game where one team or another doesnt get 1 lane so fed by 15 mins that they can 1v3 under the turret.

For example i played my first jungle game outside of bots last night, first time WW. My team had 1 bronze, 1 silver, and myself and 2 others unranked. The enemy had 1 gold, 3 silvers, 1 unranked. I learned that im bad, and should feel bad, but nothing on how to get better.

Ramen2262 votes

You know this brings about a whole new perspective on things

It must be incredibly demoralizing to newer players when they're playing against people that they won't learn anything from losing to. It adds a huge barrier to entry on top of the informational brick wall of champions, runes, masteries, builds, roles, and the item shop to name a few.

Riot should pay attention to this ever growing problem, if not for players like me and the majority of the playerbase, but at least for newer players entering the scene so they can find their footing.

ps. keep at it man. And find some people to duo with. The game is much more fun when playing with people you know that won't insult you every opportunity. League has potential to be a much better game than it is right now. (not that it's bad but it has a lot of room for improvement.)

Funny, cause when I play with my friends and start goofing around all I get is, "Dude, how are you Plat? You're diamond in flex? LOL. HOLY CRAP you're bad. PLAT players are so bad. I can't wait to start ranking again."

Taking such huge hits to my pride every game and instead of having a nice, fun game where people are having fun, I then proceed to try hard and end up rolfstomping so hard the enemy team gets tilted or surrenders at 20 most of the time. A person can only lose and be insulted so much before they end up trying their best to win a game.

So that Diamond Corki main or that Master Xayah player may have just about had it being insulted when all they want to do is try a new champ or a new build on their main before taking it into ranks.

R0XTAR3 votes

I just played a blind where I went against a Yas main who was in Plat. I'm in Silver 3 in Solo and Bronze 1 in Flex.. how is this possible? O.o

Ramen2263 votes

People who support riot's matchmaking system will tell you something along the lines of, "its not based on rank it's based on mmr," or that, "There's a different mmr system for normals." They don't have a response for when you ask them about why does someone with the mmr orfplatinum 4 playing against someone with an mmr of silver 5 get paired against each other.

Players like me will say that the matchmaking system fails at its job of supplying 2 sets of 5 players within approximate skill level, with a preference towards players with varying main roles. Meaning that the teams are rarely even in skill, with players that prefer different roles.

The first type of player will makes excuses for the systems failures. The second type will point to its failures and ask why.

People should make their own inferences and determine which side of the line they fall on.

And these people will be right. There's a different MMR for flex, solo, and normal. Your account could as well be 3 different accounts if you switch between these queues.

Then the "why a plat would have the mmr of a silver in normal games", it's quite easy to understand as well, if I take most of my friends as an example (or me), i've got a terrible winrate in normal games because i'm not playing seriously at all, I'm just doing stupid stuff i would never do in ranked.

Ramen2262 votes

You missed pretty much the entire point.

Platinum playing casually > silver playing casually

So now I have to play much more attentive and try a lot harder just to compete.

In this case I'm fighting matchmaking not the enemy players

To put it simply, the matchmaking system in normals matches players of significantly different skill. Which is indefensible unless that's the point of normals, which it isn't.

Starcraft243ver1 votes

You missed pretty much the entire point.

Platinum playing casually > silver playing casually

Assuming "playing casually" is some benchmark without a wide range of variation is a nice fantasy.

The only truth is I have a 45% win/lose ratio in normal games, if this was to be ranked queue I would be silver/bronze. Whereas while tryharding in ranked I ended up diamond. Sorry but the system can not solve this. No system could ever solve this :)

Ramen2261 votes

I guess I didn't explain it clearly enough.

The system forces players with varying skill ceilings to play against each other. This forces players with lower skill ceilings to take normals seriously even though the player with a higher skill ceiling isn't trying his hardest.

The biggest problem is that you're ok with a normals system that babies you and places you vs players you have a 45% win rate vs without trying which is pathetic.

If you don't want to win or play seriously that's on you, not anybody else. It ruins the experience of the game for everyone else you play with when they have to play against someone that, at their prerogative, can flip everything and destroy them.

Sorry but the system can not solve this. No system could ever solve this

How about creating an mmr tether that makes it so your normals mmr can only be so much worse than your ranked mmr? Ranked mmr is usually a good indicator of how good a given player is when they're trying their hardest. And that should be the single biggest factor when creating teams. Make your ranked mmr affect your normals mmr but not the other way around.

Your entire argument is essentially, "I, a player significantly better than you, should have the right to be lazy in normals and so the system should pair me with weaker opponents so I can win without caring." It is YOUR choice whether to win or lose. If you choose not to care about that win that is your decision and is perfectly fine in a normals setting.

But to say the system should make it so that your choice to not care about winning or improving should help you by giving you opponents you can still beat is so self entitled it's pathetic.

Then i'll create a brand new account, I wont play a single ranked game on it (or maybe lose my 10 placement to be placed bronze 5) and I'll keep doing what I did before.

Also what about the people who just plays normal games in general ?

It took me less than 3 second to bypass your nice "protection". If you want to play against people your own skill level, the ranked games are there for it.

If you want to train new champions against people around your skill level, do it in ranked flex for example. That's what most people do.

https://support.riotgames.com/hc/en-us/articles/201898070#h1q1 According to the support page, "Disciplinary Bans are associated with actions that do not uphold the Summoner’s Code."

And the summoners code http://gameinfo.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/game-info/get-started/summoners-code/ says rule #4 is to enjoy yourself but not at anyone else's expense

Now I'm not saying that the current system enforces it's own rules at all, but creating a separate account to purposely play against lower level players by all means is a punishable offense.

And since we're talking about implementing a system that works properly, creating asmurf account to play against lower level players so you can continue being a shitty person and rofl stomp normals would be considered a ban-able offense.

Not to mention you didn't realize that tethering ranked mmr to normals means that if you're good enough in normals you can surpass your ranked mmr. So your genius plan kinda forgets that the system would allow bronze 5 to play against diamond 1 (in normals) if the bronze 5's mmr is at diamond 1 level. What it WOULDNT allow is diamond 1 to play against bronze 5 because he doesn't take normals seriously. Normal queue still has its own independent system, but it would prevent your mmr from being so much lower than your ranked mmr that you can play against silver players as platinum.

Diamond 1 not being able to lower his mmr enough to play against bronze 5 IS NOT THE SAME as bronze 5 being good enough in normals so his mmr is diamond 1

All you've done is displayed your inability to understand how the system would, and should, function.

It is thoroughly amusing that you think stating the obvious and hitting caps lock enforces your argument.

  1. You haven't said anywhere in this post anything to refer to the elo system as 0 sum

  2. We aren't talking about the elo system, we're talking about the mmr system and the program that decides what players to put into the same lobby.

  3. The definition of 0 sum is, "of, relating to, or being a situation (such as a game or relationship) in which a gain for one side entails a corresponding loss for the other side dividing up the budget is a zero–sum game." We all know that the mmr system is 0 sum. When one players mmr/elo goes up, another goes down. Herr derr.

You don't seem to understand either the relevance of the terms you're using (you just stated that the mmr system is 0 sum, which we all knew and understood, without providing context to what you were actually trying to say) and you really just seem tilted at the idea of having easy games taken away.

Play games at your own skill level. Stop with the raging at the mere thought of having to try to win. (which, yes, you are in fact raging)

I'm going to stop replying because it's apparent you have no intentions of a reasonable discussion. Unless you give me a good reason as to why you, a platinum level player, deserve to play against people significantly below your skill level.

Starcraft243ver1 votes

You haven't said anywhere in this post anything to refer to the elo system as 0 sum

I'm writting it on every single topic where a stupid proposition about the elo system occurs.

We aren't talking about the elo system, we're talking about the mmr system and the program that decides what players to put into the same lobby.

It's quite ironical that "MMR" is how they named the elo system in LoL. The elo system was designed for chess or go, i dont remember. It's just used in any competitive and serious video game.

We all know that the mmr system is 0 sum. When one players mmr/elo goes up, another goes down.

Eh everything isnt lost maybe ... so do you now undertstand why stating that "This player's mmr in normal game can't go below his ranked mmr" will and can never ever happen ?

Ramen2261 votes

I'm still not quite sure you understand that the mmr system in normals doens't have to be 0 sum. If a player has proven his capabilities in ranked is to play at a certain level then the system doesn't need to compensate when he loses a game in normals.

On the other hand if a player does NOT play ranked or is found to have a level of skill superior to players his level in normals then their mmr shopuld go up.

Mmr in ranked and elo in ranked should be 0 sum as that just how a ranking system works.

But normals doesn't have a ranking system and the mmr system should only be used to determine what a players peak potential is and match them with other players of similar skill.

I get that you don't want the system to change because you'd be held responsible for your own losses but that doesn't mean that I should have to play against you because you just happened to not be trying in your most recent games. Normal mmr shouldn't fluctuate so greatly from ranked mmr, and it doesn't have to because mmr (regardless if it currently is 0 sum or not) doesn't have to be, and any system that allows players of differing skill levels to play against each other unintentionally is fundamentally flawed.

tldr: elo and lp is required to be 0 sum mmr is not

Starcraft243ver1 votes

What the ...

I'm still not quite sure you understand that the mmr system in normals doens't have to be 0 sum.

Mmr in ranked and elo in ranked should be 0 sum as that just how a ranking system works.

But normals doesn't have a ranking system

elo and lp is required to be 0 sum mmr is not

Okay. Lets restart from scratch.

ELO is a generic name for a ranking system based on a "elo score" allowing you to rank people efficiently based on a win lose system. It's mainly used in chess, board games, video games.

MMR is the name RIOT gave to your ELO score and they keep it hidden. MMR = ELO score.

There is no question of "elo can be 0 sum in this situation and can"t in this situation", elo is a "SYSTEM", you can't change the rules of this system without breaking it hard.

Normal have the SAME ranking system as ranked games have, it's just a separate one and it doesnt tell you any fancy division or stuff like "you are gold, you are plat", but the real system behind normal mmr and ranked mmr works exactly the same way. If tomorow they want to add a rank to normal game they can do it in the blink of an eye, all the numbers are already there, you just have to display each player's mmr.

LP is never required to be 0 sum, LP and division are just fancy rewards so people can set up fancy goals while playing (at least fancier than saying "i'm going to aim for 2000 points), it breaks the goals in small steps and give medals to people.

The best proof LP doesnt follow a 0 sum algorithm is when someone dodges he loses LP and noone wins LPs.

You can also see that LP can't follow a 0 sum system since there's a shifting to the left in "LP ranks" (aka the divisions) at the begining of the season and it pushes people to climb back.

tl;dr : elo = MMR, LP is not 0 sum, you mixed up everything.

Ramen2261 votes

You didnt explain how the system works today, I did. Everything you said was "no you are wrong", without any argument, I can't discuss with you because you lack the basic knowledge of how the system work.

You told me the LP system was 0 sum when it's not. What kind of argument can you bring after that, any sentence you write is a whole fail showing how you dont understand anything about elo/mmr and LP.

I can attest to this post. I faced an enemy team that I just felt bad for beating so badly. It was a team of unranked players, one of which was level 24, against my team of silver and gold players with one unranked friend. It may have been one of the more stompy games I've played in a while and I really just felt bad because I could tell they weren't very experienced player.

Leonerdo3 votes

That's what you get when everyone thinks "It's just normals." People don't care; sometimes they play their main at their best, because winning is fun, and sometimes they goof around and play random champions, because that's fun too. And since people aren't consistently competitive in normals, matchmaking is bound to be less accurate.

None of that is problem though. That's how it should be. People just need to realize it and deal with it. It's intended to be a less competitive queue, so we should accept that it's gonna be a little less balanced on average.

Auto-losses and stomps are still lame, but if you go into a normal game with lower expectations (like don't base your entire appreciation of the game on the end-result; winning doesn't matter, "it's just normals", right?) it can still be somewhat fun. Don't play normals to win. Play them to try something new, or to goof around with friends, or to just get one good fight or make one cool play. Or just follow the advice everyone's heard a million times already, and focus on your own play rather than the game at large. If matchmaking sucked and put you against diamonds, or your team just dicked off all game, whatever; personally you can still do well and have fun (before surrendering at 20), and maybe you'll learn a cool new trick from that diamond player.

Ramen2262 votes

I understand your point that normals are supposed to be less competitive. However less competitive =/= unplayable I just want the casual experience to be able to have fun with some of the other players in the game (disregarding the toxic playerbase)

Auto-losses and stomps are still lame,

And that's what I'm trying to discuss. A matchmaking system where players can consistently play against people their skill level. To me at least, it's one of the things that a multiplayer game cannot exist without and should be one of the core functions.

Starcraft243ver1 votes

A matchmaking system where players can consistently play against people their skill level.

This makes no sens. I DECIDE the skill level I want to input in my next game. This isnt a move the system can forecast, this isnt a move the most advanced system in the world could forecast.

Sure I can't play better than my maximum, but I truly decides if i'll play like a bronze or like a diamond. It's not up to the matchmaking. it's just up to me, the choice of my champion and how much I want to win the game.

When I'm in ranked, I'll always choose my mains, and play the best I can. In blind solo queue ? Just depends on my mood. Sometimes i'll just pick my main (veigar) and aim for 1500 ap and I will CRUSH the game, sometimes i'll play soraka with as much lifesteal I can, when i played maybe 10 time soraka in my life. It often ends up with me, my botrk half finished and the ennemy team taking the nexus quite fast.

Now tell me, tell me how any system could solve this problematic. :)

This is the kindof thing that makes me want to quit league entirely. There is nothing that can be done against smurfs. I'm doing my damnest to get to gold 5, but it seems so impossible because every single game one of my teammates will get COMPLETELY STOMPED by a smurf. After the game you check their match history its a looooooooooong line of straight wins. It's so fuckin stupid. I can't get a chance to carry because the game won't allow it.

Ranked has become a chance game. It's either you will have a good player that carries or they will. I usually get fed as an ADC main, but I can't do shit if our top laner went 0/6 beause he went against a riven main smurf.

creatureplex3 votes

Lol oh shit honestly I thought I was just getting unlucky had like 10 games in a row facing people of plat or higher some of them weren't rank yet but were in diamond from a year ago, honestly it's not really fair and it does completely ruin normal draft for people that don't wanna play rank.

RacoonHunter3 votes

What's even worse is the fact that normals make you feel like total shit. I've been trying out new roles and champions before jumping back into ranked to get back up to gold (tilted before mid season and dropped 5 places), trying out the new updates, and yet, in 9 times out of 10 normals, it's either a stomp like the op said, or toxic players ruin the game's fun.

Example. I get home from work tonight, hop onto a normal and call jungle elise.. I end up doing poorly because I'm rusty on her as well as slightly tired from work.. then proceed to get flamed because I get one shot by a renekton who's able to use tiamat twice in less than a second..

turns out that renekton according to op.gg was a diamond 4 player.. I'm currently silver 4 almost back up to silver 3.. this IS NOT RIGHT riot. I want to try and learn in a real setting, and yet not only do I get flamed and called hateful things, but I'm being matched against players WELL above my current skill level..

You could try observing their strats to help yourself improve. The only thing you can control is yourself in the end.

Ramen2262 votes

I completely and utterly agree with you.

Which is why this isn't a qq post about other players holding me back and the like. That is a variable next to impossible to eliminate and we should seriously consider the ramifications of having such a system.

I am referring to the system placing lower level players alongside higher level players because of a sub optimal matchmaking system.

Elkington VI3 votes

Seems like it's always been this way to me. I mean, I've played nothing but normals since I started playing this game and I've even played with and against Diamond V - Challenger players in the past. Naturally, I got my ass kicked most of the time, but I think those experiences helped me improve as a player. The easiest way to get better at anything is by facing opponents that are a lot better than you are.

I don't think matchmaking will ever find "true balance," so I would just look at it as an opportunity. Even if you're getting dumpstered, you can turn that defeat into something positive by finding an aspect of your playstyle/strategy to practice.

ZT Xperimentor2 votes

Indeed but it's been getting noticeably worse every year, and had a huge spike when they forced auto-fill. However I take it as a sign league is dying, sure smurfs disrupt matchmaking but they should be sorted out after a while; why are low level players consistently being setup against high level players? Seems like there's not enough people in either group to go around. Obviously it's just an observation about a correlation with some speculation.

Asayake 5150glow2 votes

In many of my recent games, I've been the only bronze on my team, at least judging by borders. I've had 3 plats at once, an occasional diamond, and the rest gold's and silver's.

We stomped that game with three plats on my team, by the way.

Venomar2 votes

Had the worst example of this happen to me a few games ago. I'm constantly getting put with and against plats and diamond level players in normals and it just sucks. I was up against a platinum Renekton one trick, on like my third time learning a new champion who proceeded to antagonize and cuss at me for not wanting to do anything in the lane.

I mean I'm all for a challenge and learning from better players but it's no fun sitting under your tower farming while they attack your tower and still not being able to fight them because they can kill you under tower, or being denied with perfect lane freezing and punished for even the littlest mistake.

Yea i know, git good and etc.

Just an expression lol. More like I'm going to lose lane to him anyways. So just by walking into lane I've essentially lost.

Not all the time, surely. I have beaten golds, platinums. Hell even the very rare diamond. But naturally, players that are higher ranked are going to be better in every way and will have a much bigger impact on the game.

Didn't mean it literally. But players beating me because the matchmaking system is faulty, not necessarily* my gameplay.

You're right, they absolutely will play better than you most of the time. It's why they have a higher ranking. That said, one thing you could try is adding them after the game and asking how you could have beaten them. I personally always felt the most growth as a player by playing people who were better than me

Ramen2261 votes

They're usually jerks in game. Spamming mastery, bming in all chat, etc. So I tend to avoid them.

That being said, the point still stands that I shouldn't be forced to play against them constantly.
