I think the overwhelming community would like for there to be 5 bans, 1 per player, and I think this is the best suggestion presented yet, then when the champion pool doubles again, we can double the banns again.

Riot says the game shouldn't be about bans, yet we still have bans, if bans are not incremential to the game, why do they even exist? Also, bans add alot of strategy to the game and without them the strategic value would decrease, at least in my opinion.

What do we have now? Like 130 champs+? The low ammount of bans is horrible at the moment. I think Riot needs to realise there will never be balance, the closest we've probably ever been was perhaps at the end of season 3 before Riot started making every new champion release gimmicky with kits that are semi broken, having abilites that are impossible to balance out since they are innately broken. Also, gereralist and mobility creep has become so much worse since then.

Not in soloQ. Bans are there to fix the most severe OP champions (eg old Kassadin). It's delusional to assume that bans add strategy to soloQ.

I don't play blind pick anymore, since I feel it's cancerous as hell, thus I only play draft as I haven't reached lvl 30 yet. And I can tell you bans are indeed a part of strategy in soloQ, regardless of if ones team communicates or not, for instance:

Banning out the strongest champs can also be called a strategy as some people are more confident without having them in the game. Bans do without a doubt have a strategic value, even if that value is just purely psychological.

Another example would be playing teamcaptain in soloQ draft or ranked. You know you want to play a particular champ, yet you know you might not be able to rely or your team to pick it or risk having the opposing team pick it, what do you do? You ban it's main counters.

An example of this would be Riven mains banning out Renektons and Garens. Which is fairly common and without a doubt a strategy.

Ergo, you're wrong.

So if people feel like a champion is OP even though numbers and results prove that he/she/it isn't.. Riot should just nerf it so that the deluded players feel better? Because that's the result, as certain champions would be permabanned with 10 bans even though they are not even OP (as proved in all my other posts).

So 2 out of 10 get to ban practically every counterpick to their own champions.. And there is nothing the others can do about it. Do you even realize how friggin unhealthy this is? This is exactly NOT what bans should be for. Sure, you can ban some of your counters. But you shouldn't be able to ban 5 uncomfortable champions for your own one.. That's extremely egoistical, doesn't even favor your team if both captains do it, decreases the fun the other players have (because they are forced into an uncomfortable matchup by default) and is not even strategically demanding or anything. That's exactly something someone would say who opposes 10 bans.

Yes if you broaden the definition it would indeed be some sort of 'strategy'. The most cheap, unsatisfying (for everyone else), uninteristing and unhealthy one.

I don't feel that I need to educate you about anything, that's your own responsability. I'm just stating the obvious, you claim bans have no strategic value and you are flat out wrong. You wanna pull rank, go ahead, just proves you can't find a proper argument to prove me wrong.

I don't care what Riot does about "OP" champs. If I don't want it in my game wether for personal or strategic reasons, that should be up to me, given I'm team captain.

Wether cheap, unsatisfying or otherwise, strategy is still strategy wether you like it or not.

Alright, the statement as it is is surely an exaggeration, however there is no doubt that the strategic aspect of banning is in the end not really in-depth and more importantly doesn't increase with the number of bans. Banning counters is to a certain degree surely strategic, despite of course being something rather egoistical to do and not really benefiting the team too much. But we already have 3 bans, so if you want to ban some counters you already have the option to do so - more bans wouldn't increase the strategic aspect, but would rather start being obnoxious. Just imagine a Nasus player banning the 5 strongest top laners (in terms of lane strength and bullying potential) - and the other captain maybe banning the popular early game jungler in that meta. Sure, it's somehow some sort of strategy. But would you really say that the play experience increases for everyone? Even if you would only ban 1 uncomfortable champion for your role (assuming everyones role is clear, which is very often not the case in soloQ) that wouldn't really be some strategic depth but rather.. Just a bigger comfort zone? Not really a great addition to the game aswell.

Yes, your nitpicking lead to me 'admitting' that the statement like that was an exaggeration, however we are here to discuss whether it makes sense to implement more bans.

{quoted}

You clearly lost sight of what your original statement. YOU want to prove that we need more bans. You have the burden of proof. You can't admit that the gain is unhealthy and at the same time act like you proved your point.

Well, apparently they care at least somewhat about my "demands" since I'm given 3 bans as team captain.

My original statement is that we, the majority of the community WANT more bans, the game would without a doubt be alot fairer if every player was given a ban each, that way they could decide themselves what they DON'T want to play against.

"I think the overwhelming community would LIKE for there to be 5 bans, 1 per player, and I think this is the best suggestion presented yet, then when the champion pool doubles again, we can double the banns again." - Original statement

The rest is motivation as to WHY we would like more bans. I've explained it concretely without resorting to vague concepts like: "cheap strategy" "confort zone" blablabla.

Also, when it comes down to it, isn't LoL supposed to be about having FUN? If the majority of the community finds this to be an idea that would improve the entertainment value of the game, then it's just a loss not to implement it.

So where's my burden of proof? Yeah, what we want is to be able to roflstomp freely with the strongest champs like a true fotmer. Whatever man, neither you nor I stand anything to gain from argumenting with each other, so how about we just accept that we feel differently about this?

Slamurai Jack2 votes

The majority of the community wants lots of things that would be bad for the game, namely: stronger towers, assassins as a class to be unviable, more bans, more vision in the game, removal of all minion block, weaker snowballing, etc.

HeadHonchkrow3 votes

Wait, how is minion block even good? And why keep the turrets in their current potato state?

Slamurai Jack1 votes

Because if minion block is no longer a thing, you can no longer CS the moment you can't win an all in since the enemy laner can just stand on top of your CS to keep you from clicking on them. As for towers, all making them stronger will do is artificially lengthen games since you would likely need to kill multiple enemies before you could even siege a tower. Imagine if defending towers 1v3 was actually a reasonable expectation. Think about how that would change the game. If you want to make split pushing the only viable strategy, then by all means, make towers stronger. I don't think you want that.

HeadHonchkrow2 votes

I can see how minion block would serve a purpose, but why keep turrets as weak as they are? I don't think the community wants the turrets to be that strong; rather, the community seems to dislike how pathetically weak the turrets are now.

Gregor Gysi1 votes

The complaints about turrets have a history. People have been complaining about them since practically forever. Seeing how stronger turrets promote stalling games I never liked the idea.

Simple, if bans don't exist and towers are potato sacks then god/top tier fotm will rule supreme, you will see the same 5-10 champions doing fantasticly highskilled plays by diving shattier undeserving champs that shouldn't even have the odacity to be in the game under their tower and deleting them, this makes for awesome LCS like play, Much coolness, such tastyness. Wow.

Stop saying majority maybe 0.01 percent of people use boards because all the high elo players are playing. No in Solo Que bans are not strategic the reason being is You dont have time to formulate a strat its more or less who do u wanna not play against. 5 bans is wayyy to much giving the fact thag there arent 10 good supports/j unglers in the game. Noone thinks with their head they just get on boards and complains without thinking. Darius was like the most pick baned champions for example he gets played worlds everyone sees him being countered and noone plays him anymore

killd0zer1 votes

Nope, still supposed to be used strategically

Gregor Gysi2 votes

The thing with soloQ bans is that they are used to ban OP champs (which is OK, but 6 bans are more than enough for the strongest ones), banning of counters (which is okay as it is atm, but if we'd get more bans it would start to get unhealthy as you don't want to have no strong toplaners left when they pick Nasus and it just doesn't feel good) and banning of popular champions that are not strong (eg Yasuo sucks atm and he'd still be permaban if people had 10 bans). There sure is some sort of strategy behind soloQ bans, however there are no gains in terms of in-depth strategy/healthy strategy with 5 bans.

DeynaTaggerung1 votes

Well part of the issue is that when playing in organized teams having 4 bans means you can target ban out someone's champion pool, even if they have a pretty deep one.

Criomhthann2 votes

Which is a huge risk for the team which does it. As it means that the other four members will likely be able to get whatever they want. Also, doing this would encourage players to have deeper champion pools as a means of not being banned out.

I do, however, believe that a flat increase in bans is foolish, and that a banning phase similar to what DOTA has should be adopted.

Ban phase:

10 bans total

2 bans on both sides 2 picks on both side 2 bans on both sides 2 picks on both sides 1 ban on both sides 1 pick on both sides

This also makes it difficult to ban anyone player out.

idk man Malph, Rengar, Jax, Vayne, Soraka, Mundo, Brand, Kench, Illaoi, and Fiora are all pretty stupid at the moment and are a pain to deal with on both teams.

Yuri By Mail1 votes

Don't play AD champions against Malphite, or don't try to kill him with physical damage. Is that not what a physical tank is supposed to do? Is that not the similar philosophy to "rush Abyssal Scepter as an AP laner against Veigar" in practice?

The others are generally true, though I would differentiate between stupid, unfun, anti-meta and broken IMO.

SpongebobIsLife1 votes

malph in general provides so much for the enemy team. A very strong engage, a strong slow, a heavy aoe attack slow, and his damage increases with his armor. And he somehow manages to stay under the radar with 55 percent win rate. And you don't always have the luxury of picking against him, and even if you have an ap mid, if that ap mid isn't a heavy aoe mage he can still build full armor and rek face.

Yuri By Mail1 votes

Malphite may need tuning, but a fundamental question we have to ask is whether he is strong because of the meta changing or because of items, masteries and such.

I think we can agree a lot of his newfound strength comes from the preseason changes and not due to any items he tends to buy. His kit hasn't changed, he has offered that much utility for quite awhile.

SpongebobIsLife1 votes

its some of the meta favoring him along with every tank besides him being nerfed

Dreadlocks1 votes

I think if riot were to increase bans to 5 a side you HAVE to also give one to each person on the team. I could see someone picking mid or top then banning every counter pick with their 5 bans... I know the same argument can be made with 3 bans, but if we're talking abt a single lane and a single champion, having 2 extra bans could pretty much grunte that player a favorable lane.

Gregor Gysi17 votes

There are several problems with more bans.

soloQ problems:

  • the function of banning in soloQ is mainly banning the OP champions

  • the main bans are the OP champions (OK), the champions who are only in competetive strong (useless because they aren't OP in soloQ) and the popular champions (which are not necessarily strong, but overplayed due to their kit) - examples are Yasuo, Lee Sin and Riven. -> certain champions that are not even strong get baned for no reason - which would mean permaban when we have more bans

  • as many people on the boards tend to disagree with the above, I am going to assume that people always ban the OP champions: -> the strength will simply shift: OP tier gets banned, so tier 1 is going to be OP tier. Tier 2 is the new Tier 1 etc. ->> more bans are useless, unless there are more than 4 champions that are outstandingly OP (eg old Kassadin - there was no way to match his relative strength with other OP picks)

competetive problems:

  • too speculative, not going into that. It doesn't look like many (if any) pros support more bans.

What's so bad if OP tier get's banned out? The difference between tier 1 champs and your avarage champ is always smaller than the difference between God Tier and avarage champs, by that sentiment, having more bans would actually balance the game.

Old average champions =/= new average champions. But sure, if we had 100 bans most champions would be on the same level (shit tier level -> Top tier), but that's unrealistic anyways.

{quoted}

Lee Sin and Yasuo have pretty much been God Tier since their release, they are not played primarily because "wow such cool kits", they are played because they are the top tier generalists. Believe it or not, most players play to win, by your logic, no one would play Garen since his kit is 1dimensional and boring, yet he get's played, why? Because he's strong!

NOPE. Lee Sin&Yasuo are extremely overrated (alright, Lee Sin was actually God Tier for quite a while, but he hasn't been God Tier since quite a while). Also, no. Believe it or not, most players do not know what they need to play in order to win. If something gets picked in professional play people think that it's OP (which is quite possibly the case) - but the champions are actually way too hard to play and not really efficient in soloQ (eg Azir). Experienced Yasuo players (more than 125 rankeds played, on plat+ level) have a winrate of below 50% - which is obviously not good. But yet he is sitting on a 10% playrate. Most people are obviously either too stupid to realize what they have to play in order to win or they have some clear preferences for what is fun. I never said that no popular champion is OP. But I said that not every popular champion is OP. And especially not Yasuo/Lee Sin/Riven atm, even though they are rated OP by most on the forums atm.

{quoted}

Lastly, why should the game be entirely balanced after pro play? They are but a fraction of the community yet the game should be shaped solely after their whims? Also, I'd like to know which pros are opposed to the idea of more bans since it's such an popular opinion among pros.

Eh?? I didn't even consider professional play, because it's simply too complex and quite frankly, I do not have enough knowledge to judge that. I simply pointed out that it doesn't make sense for soloQ (and gave reasons + sources) and that there are also no pro players that want more bans. That's why I concluded that we do not need more bans, neither for soloQ purposes nor for professional play.

"Lee Sin isn't overrated", he's a top tier jungler and has been forever, he does well above avarage in all other roles including support, given the player is competent enough to use him effectively. This is because he's a generalist - more or less good at anything or everything.

Anyone knows Lee Sin is harder to pick up than Garen, but is he harder to master? Mechanically, without a doubt. Overall? I wouldn't say so.

On the contrary, gereralist champions have alot more vercatility bound into their kits, thus giving them far more room to make mistakes and get away with it than 1 or 2 dimensional champions, from that perspective, I'd even go as far as claiming they are easier to play at the top level. I know people probably won't agree with me on this and I'm not saying it's the absolute truth, but it's my opinion.

Oh, you are trying to insult me, nice one! Alright, so let's assume people would want to maximize their chances to win and would actually be able to realize what they need in order to maximize their chances of winning. That's like.. The exact opposite what you said. And now let's compare him to Dr. Mundo who has a 52.83% winrate - on players with 1-5 Mundo rankeds. Dr. Mundo JGL has a 4.14% pick - Lee JGL has 34.32%. So people somehow love to play Lee, even though they would get better results first-timing Mundo JGL. Weird, huh? INB4 'the popularity decreases Lee's winrate because the average Lee player is worse' - that's why I included games played. What are you doing?! Also, why the ... do you delete your own posts? I quoted them anyways, so if you are ashamed then well, you dun goofed.

OH PLEASE. Originally I posted something differentiated and reasonable:

And you answered to exactly that:

The beginning is completely dumb, because I never even hinted that the game should be 'entirely balanced after pro play'. And then you go ahead and say something about how many pro players would love to have more bans. Yet you don't feel like you need to prove anything. In this context I posted: 'there are also no pro players that want more bans.' because it seems that you ignore differentiated statements. You should really fix your self-righteous attitude. And stop deleting your posts or do I really have to take screenshots?!

Has it ever occured to you that I might be deleting posts because I'm just repeating myself thus flooding the thread with repetition of the same content?

Take as many printscreens as you want, this is apparently a sensitive subject to you so do what you need to do.

I'm genuinely interested why you ignore the content of my posts in this stringt even though the quality of the content here is way higher than on the other. Also I highly doubt that it is for this reason, as you didn't even delete your doublepost - I can't even comprehend why you'd doublepost instead of editing. No idea why you think that it's so sensitive that you'd delete it and then make up lies which obviously can't be true.

Jesus Christ Ahmed, tone the toxicity back. Don't you have more important things to do?

wouldnt increasing the numbers of bans would as increase the number of champs require for new plays to play ranks

Sammystorm5 votes

your entire point is based off the idea that the majority of people want this change. You have no idea if that is true or not. So how about you try to develop a idea instead of just assuming that the community wants something it may or may not want.

Okay, so I have a wild and crazy thought here: Maybe, just maybe, instead of crying about lack of bans, you could, I donno, learn how to play against champions you don't like? Is that a possibility? 'cause, back in the day, you won because you eventually learned to overcome challenges, not because you totally avoided whatever it was you couldn't beat.

Every single champion can be beaten, and every single champion has counterplay.

So why don't we just stop crying, and actually put in a little effort to learn how to play against champions you don't like? I know you can do it. :3

You can do it. JUST DO IT

I've once read that they won't increase the bans because you could ''outban'' a whole player in the lcs with 5 bans. But on the other hand: why can't we just seperate soloQ from proplay?

rtbf2232199601 votes

Because I'm not good enough to play league competitively so I don't have to deal with the soloq problems >~>

Myrmiron2 votes

It LITERALLY doesn't matter since strategic bans will die with season 6 anyways. No way solo queue players can communicate what "op" picks to leave open to lure the enemy into your trap. Without all bans done by 1 player, Riot might as well just disable the top 10 champions the pros pick the most, since that's what banning will become once the changes happen.

I think 2 bans would be perfect and here's why:

The problem, ironically, is that every champion has clear cut counterplay. There's rarely, if ever, a situation where you can say "well, there's nothing I could do there, every portion of his kit counters mine". This largely because map movements decide the game more than anything else. Presuming, of course, that you didn't go jungle Raka or AD Thresh.

When I'm first pick, I have no idea what to ban. I'm left with banning whatever champion optimally fits the meta (Mundo, Brand) or something that I find obnoxious to play against (Rengar, Thresh, Vayne, MF). However, that doesn't mean it's impossible to kite Mundo, that I can't dodge Brand pillar, that I won't be sitting on my ADC (or theirs) vs Rengar, that Lucian/Kalista can't be just as cumbersome as MF/Vayne or that a good Blitz/Naut wouldn't outshine Thresh. They're "might as well" bans instead of strategic decisions.

2 bans would force me to choose between something I dislike personally and whatever is considered "strong". It would force players to adapt their playstyle to the game instead of vice versa.

Bans always should be limited for this reason. Removing broken or picks that counter comps is how bans is meant to be. Removing obnoxious picks is usually how bans are used.

I found three bans just fine until the juggernaut update. The outrageous imbalance to the game brought about by that patch was evident in the fact that the four juggernauts immediately became mandatory bans. The reworks of Fiora and Gangplank, both of which (as is usual for Riot's reworks) vastly overpowered their respective champions, made those two round out the general six. In my experience, the two teams, rather tellingly, generally cooperated to ban all six. It was naturally a shame, though, that some ill-advised buffs had produced a roster of necessary bans, thus removing the capacity to ban strategically; it was now either ban those champions or be faced with a disproportionately powerful champion on the enemy team---or, perhaps to have one of those champions on your team, and watch he or she run away with the game to an extent that removed all challenge.

Sadly, the changes in preseason have produced an even more broken champion pool. Now there are far too many overpowered champions to ban. All one may do is hope that none of those are picked by the other team (or, if you're me, by my own team). Now the lobby heads must simply ban those overpowered champs that they consider most dangerous. There is, therefore, even less space to make strategic bans than existed before preseason. It's a shame, really.

I'm baffled that threads keep coming up about this, but it may be because you are from EU and Riot hasn't released information about it there.

But the new Champion Select, in a game mode where bans occur, will have 5 bans, one for each player.

This is old news, at least to NA players.

Please, enough with these threads, the change is coming and already set, just hasn't been released yet.
