There was never a set time frame where this game did not have a specific set of champions or items that were just not a pain the anus. Classes and champions were never perfectly balanced. You are delusional and thinking back to times that you have come believe were different. All the game was in the past was another OP item or champion. Ranging from the old FoN, to sunfire capes, to black cleaver. Meta's dominated by long rage poke champions, mages, or bruisers. This game is a hectic bag of craziness. It always has been. Solo queue was never perfect, but neither is dynamic queue. Just give Riot some time. Things will get smoothed out. I remember how much crying I would see over solo queue, and now apparently it was a god send system.

People who are new to the genre are mystified and amazed at all the cool things they're doing and they're unable to recognize or even understand what the problems are. They're never worried about "playing well" because they're new and are just trying to figure out how any of it works at all. Once they hang around awhile, get better at the game, start to understand things, they start to see the game for what it's been all along except they can't separate the current state from their initial feelings on the game when they were brand new. Therefor, when things were new everything was better and the game has only gotten worse since they started.
It's the essence of nostalgia.

I personally like to blame the rising status of e-sports and the focus on professional play. When the game gets to that point, the flaws become way more apparent and frustrating since people really care about ranked play more.
The game kinda reminds me of an episode of myth busters where they took different types of fecal matter and polished them into these really cool balls. You would have never of guessed they were balls of shit. They were visually appealing at that point, and were something entirely different. League of Legends is just a giant polished ball of poopoo.
