Normals- Why do people rage?

Shaabanglyy··39 votes·8,069 views

Ok. Ill just clarify from the beginning that I am not talking about trolling. Trolling is and will always be wrong whether in normal or not.

But can someone explain to me why, when I am in a normal trying to play champs and roles that I do not feel are ranked ready, that I get cussed out and berated all game long?

Is it wrong for me to play new champs and roles in normal? Not troll picks, just stuff I haven't done much before. Bots easily become to easy and don't really prepare you very well besides knowing your kit. So logically I move to normals and I find it DISGUSTING that I get raged at all game long because I was 0/3 midlane at 15 mins. I understand I could have played better. But I wasn't feeding. I died to ganks and once to a bad roam to botlane that went south.

Mind you I ended up with better stats at the end than the "adc" who was raging at me all game but I honestly don't know how to get better at other lanes without PLAYING them and the community seems to have no interest in people needing to or wanting to learn other roles.

Ugh. Sorry for the rant.

TLDR STFU PLEASE IF IM STRUGGLING IN A GAME!

Edit 11/20: I am pretty excited to see all the support his venting post received! I am glad to hear I am not the only one! I have friends! Amumu

Why do you think verbal harassment is okay if it's in ranked? People have bad games, it's never okay to harass others. People, including me, do it anyway because of poor anger management.

I don't think its ok ever. But atleast in the context of a ranked match I understand why people are under more pressure and feeling stressed.

I think you should at least have cs' ing and your basic combo mechanics pretty down pact from intermediate bots before bringing it to normals. I can't think of any champion I played in normals without trying in bots first (other than supports - not saying they don't take skill but that you don't really support in a bot match, you just steamroll).

That said I've still been owned with champions that I try pvp after a couple bots and get yelled at sometimes, it happens. I only find it particularly bad when you're taking a role someone else asked for, because they probably think they could carry from that role. I mean, you're allowed to still take normals seriously and want to win. Would be better to be constructive though, like even just ask you to stay at tower, if you choose to ignore the advice they still shouldn't rage but I won't defend you at that point nor will I report them. If nice doesn't work I'm fine with them getting ugly even if I wouldn't.

slaya451 votes

Don't you just steamroll bots in any role? Seriously though, if I'm waiting for friends to get out of a game I'll just load a 1v5 intermediate bots and see how fast I can get to 100 kills.

ValyrianBlade3 votes

Yes you do. My point is, steamrolling bots as say, an assassin or marksmen, will help you learn that assassin/marksmen. You'll learn the mechanics, combos, how to cs, etc... Steamrolling a bot as a support won't help you play support. You're not warding against bots. You're not protecting against ganks. You're not zoning the adc or trying to protect your own. Against bots you're just wrecking them, if you try that as a support in pvp you're going to feed. So what I mean is, you'll still gain skill playing bots in other roles even if you're just owning.

I've never understood that either. It's turned me off so much of normal games I pretty much refuse to play unless I have a friend with me or am playing ARAM. [Off topic, but why do people rage in ARAM??!?] I've never understood why people rage- it's not like you just pick up a champion and are LCS caliber with them. It takes time and practice and the only way to practice them and get better is to play against PEOPLE (the bots have gotten better but they still aren't a replacement for how real people work in game). Especially if you are playing the harder champs (I'm talking Syndra, Azir, Leblanc etc) it takes practice to get good.

Besides that, what happens (personal experience) if you are trying to branch out your champion pool and play a style completely different from what you're used to? I have issues going from long range mages (I started playing with Lux initially) to someone like Riven ? That style is a 180 change and it takes time and practice to excel with them.

I played an ARAM game the other day with MasterYi and sucked it up, I admit, but someone was raging at me telling me that I suck and he's the easiest champ in the game...I've been playing awhile but AP caster is my style, not melee fighter and I have problems playing that type of champion.

I agree with EndlessSorcerer, mute them if they want to talk to you like you're dirt. Not worth.

To your off topic question, I almost never see that happen in ARAM, but I saw it happen recently and it was hilarious. This dude in my ARAM match was raging so hard. It was hilarious. It's a long story though so be ready. Me, him, and a friend of mine did an ARAM match. This dude, the Blitzcrank you see in that match that doesn't know how to build for shit, resent invites and started another ARAM match. I didn't realize he left my friend out until a couple second before match started. So I literally sat in base 5-10mins messaging my friend the whole time. Because the Blitzcrank ditched my friend so I didn't care. Then when Blitz started raging at me, I was busy laughing and typing to my friend about the rage. LOL. I couldn't stop laughing. It was hilarious. Fun Fact: At the end of the match, I had least deaths by far, most assists by far, most gold, and full build. Even though I was afk in base for the first few minutes, cause ARAM is easy like that. Though we lost cause they sucked. Me not being afk really wouldn't have changed anything. You can tell by their builds. Blitz's build is super trash. Viktor's build is trash, Irelia's build is trash, and Garen, the only one building good. So it was basically 2v5 anyways. Meh. I was Galio. Doesn't exactly help that I scale off of building MR and enemy is AD. lol. An item or two on my build is probably wrong, but meh. I also got Atma's at the end cause I was going for a cost efficient item and it was my last buy. I should probably have at least a 2nd MR item for a bit more damage or something. I don't know, but they all sucked anyways except Garen. lol. I removed the Blitzcrank off my friends list after that match. That was just hilarious. He was raging so hard and taking ARAM, of all modes, so seriously. I couldn't stop laughing. lol. Ah, what it's like playing with low levels. Is too funny. People taking ARAM seriously???? wtf???? LOL Even my friend who I was messaging for the first few minutes of it couldn't stop laughing at the Blitzcrank either for raging so hard over nothing

  • Why doesn't my team know how to build? I have Atma's on Galio though LAWL WHATS HYPOCRISY?
  • My team sucked so much guys!
  • WTF people complain ARAMS!?!?11!??

Holy shitballs what the hell is actually wrong with you? Let's break this post down shall we?

"Who takes ARAM seriously?" Who indeed.

"Man my team doesn't know how to build waaaah!" My reaction was never anything resembling that, but okay.

"I afked and died the least" Okay.

"Why doesn't my team know how to build? I have Atma's on Galio though LAWL WHATS HYPOCRISY?" I also said one or two items should probably be different. I also explained that Atma's was gotten in the last few minutes anyways and was against an all AD team and didn't have much gold at the end. I had like 2400 gold, and Frozen Heart is like 2600, and that item was better than nothing before they destroyed the Nexus. Also, if they're going to complain about losing cause of me, then they should probably look at their own build which is why they lost. If they're going to be so serious about it, then they should learn how to build on ARAM. I don't care about ARAM so I do whatever on it. I'm never serious on that mode anyways. Also, you put that in question as if I care what they build. As I said, I don't care what they build, but they should probably learn how to build on that mode if that want to take it seriously.

"My team sucked so much guys!" Okay?? It's a story. About how they were saying they lost cause of me when they didn't do any better either. So I was saying the blame was misdirected if they want to take it so seriously and blame someone. A bit hard to understand??

"WTF people complain ARAMS!?!?11!??" Yep. It was the only thing I heard the entire match. That was some nice getting along they were doing... Oh, wait... They weren't.

Nice way to breakdown someone's post with exclamation marks though, and with all caps everywhere. Good job on that.

P.S. It's a story of what they were doing, and what they should do if they didn't want to lose. I don't care if I lose on that mode, so I don't care what I do on it. My laughing was cause they were having such an ego about it while being oblivious to what they were also doing wrong. You say me insultingly laughing at them is wrong, but having an ego and thinking you're not doing anything wrong either is also wrong to do. I don't think me being nicer would've changed their attitude, their build, or their loss on that match. Most of all, I don't think niceness would kill their egos either. Niceness wouldn't have to changed the blaming either. So regardless, what I do/say, won't change a thing about them or the end result of that match. You ask what is wrong with me. So I guess complaining about someone all match and thinking you're doing so perfectly on it when you're not isn't wrong?? Like okay. No need to question what was wrong with them either. Got it. So I'll take the advice your post implies. Having an ego is okay, but laughing about someone's ego isn't okay. Then I can ask what's wrong with others when they laugh at my ego.

Gavran5 votes

Okay for what it's worth I was overly dramatic but honestly AFKing is never alright (who says it was even intentional? maybe your friend didn't accept the invite. I accidentally start matchmaking without my friends all the time), and that story is 100% about you AFKing, saying that your team takes ARAM too seriously, and then complaining about their build and play (aka taking ARAM too seriously.)

I don't really mean that one anecdote defines you as a person, but I do mean that if that's something your capable of you should evaluate why and if that's something you're okay with because while I don't doubt your team was loudly upset with you for AFKing, you're definitely the worst person in that story.

Let me put it this way: you come off pretty douchey in that story, but if I thought you didn't care and wanted to be one I wouldn't have bothered responding at all.

I am not going to argue that it's right for people to swear you out, but I'll explain why:

People want to practice their own champions that they have different levels of skill at, and, depending on how their teammates perform, they might not get the kind useful practice. For example, it's your first time playing a champion in mid-- you'll benefit from any experience, even going 0/5 at 8 min to a Leblanc, because you're learning the champion.

However, if you go 0/5 to a Leblanc at mid, that can really ruin other people's ability to practice. Let's say your bot lane is a duo queue, Sona and Varus, they are okay at both champions and are matched up against a really even lane. However, because you're creating no pressure in mid and because they have to near 100% focus on laning, Leblanc roams bot, she gets one kill for herself and one kill for their ADC and then they take dragon.

This allows their ADC to get a BF sword, their support to get really tanky, and what was a close match/learning experience for them, becomes 10 minutes of getting beaten up in a losing fight in botlane.

So, if other people are in really even matches, you can ruin their practice by being 1st time mid. Mid is also the most game impacting lane for early/mid game, so you can have people feeling like it's out of control really early.

So that's why people rage in normals, because they can't practice what they need or want to practice if someone else is hugely handicapping them.

I don't get angry at people trying new champs and roles in normal games. I did the same when I first started out in League. If my team has afk/dc teammate or the whole team is absolutely too stubborn to surrender when we are getting steamrolled, then I will be positively livid. I don't find it particularly fun when I have to spend time in a drawn out loss of a game because my team won't give in. I've heard people complaining about defeatists in League, well I have my grudge against the delusional "never surrender" players.

You must be that guy that surrendered at 20 when I was 8/3 , mid was 8/5, bot 2/5 support 0/3, and jungle 2/3.

Something worth keeping in mind is that there are a lot of people who don't see normals as just a place to practice champions for ranked. For a lot of people, it is the only thing they play. I'm not saying that any verbal abuse of you was justified. It isn't. I just want to make it clear that what you consider normals to be for is not something that should be applied to everyone else. For example, I find that there is no difference in stress or gameplay or anything else between ranked or normals, except that people in ranked tend to be slightly bigger jerks, so I play normals more often.

Really? If that's really the case, then somebody is doing something very very wrong. Normals are very different from ranked games and should be more relaxed. There's nothing on the line when we are playing normals, so obviously the atmosphere is different... unless you have people with severe attitude problems and zero understanding about normals not being a competitive game mode.

Sightless661 votes

Unfortunately the people who play normals to "try hard" are disgusting and the core problem here.

I play the same way in each game mode. I would never play to lose, and most other people don't either. "Try harding" is and has always been a pretty core part of the game. It doesn't just go away because someone is playing a normal.

Normals are very different from ranked games and should be more relaxed. There's nothing on the line when we are playing normals

There is nothing significant on the line in ranked. Ranking doesn't matter to me at all. The only important part is getting gold to get a nice skin. Aside from that, it's worthless. That's true for a lot of other people too. All it does is allow me to compare myself to other players, but that's less important than just getting better at the game.

Aside from that, I don't really ever see a major difference in what people do in each game type. People still play their favorite champions and play what they think will let them win. There are still jerks in both game modes, although ranked may have slightly more, which is why I tend to play normals.

It's ultimately the same game, no matter which mode you're in. People really don't behave that differently. The only people it is different for are the ones who choose to make it different for themselves by playing differently, such as playing something outside of their comfort zone when they normally wouldn't, but that doesn't really change the game for anyone else.

Depends. Sure there's nothing wrong about "never playing to lose" ofc, the problem is that when it comes to normals, you shouldn't really care if you lose or not - the point essentially is to have fun, winning or losing.

Sightless662 votes

I have fun when I am attempting to win. I do not have fun if I am not. Attempting to win comes with benefits such as getting more gold and becoming strong, and it is fun to be strong. I also usually play the champions I think are fun, and I win more on them because I have more experience on them. I can not think of anything I could change to have more fun. If I could, I would do that, in both ranked and normals. Again, I see no appreciable difference between the two modes other than that one assigns a number.

, you shouldn't really care if you lose or not

I can choose whether or not to care about winning or losing in either game mode. It being ranked or normal doesn't make a difference as to whether I care about winning or not. I choose not to care about either because I find that most enjoyable.

I like this guy's commitment to rage.

Also op just ignore them as its part of the genre. The community has been like this since AoS and it will never change. Even if they are laced in profanity or racist flaming of your mother many times they will have words you can learn from. I have never played a bot game to learn a champ because they are worse than 0 elo bronze players, and you will only learn bad habits. Why would you want to learn techniques that only work on killing bots? Just keep on playing the way you want to, and remember that even if your team lost during the lane phase, their team may be awful at capitalizing on that. Many games can end with people apologizing for their poor attitude due to you making good team fight decisions later.

TL;DR Don't get upset at things you can't control, it only leads to being an unhappy person as a whole.

I personally don't see a single point in raging at people because, as cheesy as it sounds, you do lose more games if you rage at your team mates. Some people respond to being bullied and improve, but most of us do not. I think there are people who have a difficult time handling losing - I agree especially with the point about it being a competitive game and competition can bring out the worst in people. There's also the GIFT theory another user linked that I think is important to note. Some people do it for shits and giggles, as it were, but I like to hope that this is a small number (not sure if I believe it, but...)

Just don't respond to these people other than team communications, and muting them if they can't handle behaving somewhat appropriately despite their anonymity. Best of luck to you out there, keep trying new champs!

This is why I stopped playing Rift altogether. I play ARAM exclusively and it's sad because I like SR but the hate and rage is so visceral I can't stand it. It would be different if this was a once-in-a-while occurrence but if I don't execute perfectly people tear into me almost every game. How the hell am I supposed to practice? Bot matches have gold players who want to get their fwotd and the game is usually over in swift fashion.

Last time someone on my team told everyone in the post-game lobby to report me because the rest of my team was using the run-out-and-die strategy and I refused to join them. The enemy team already busted down our inhibitor turrets before the 20 minute mark and we were getting trounced so you'd think we'd play conservatively or, God forbid, defensively but noooo. I wasn't playing well but at least I was trying while the rest of them were practically suiciding into the other team with no coherent strategy and I was the one who got threatened with a report. It's like saying "Participate in our stupidity or we'll have you flogged!"

Look, I understand that people want to win, I hate losing too, but some players take this waaaay too seriously. I thought Combat Arms had a harsh community but joining LoL opened my eyes to a whole new level of hate. Try to win but if you can't then lose with some freakin dignity.

Crede7772 votes

I don't rage or really talk much besides pings and things having to do with strategy. That said, I guess I don't see the point in doing something if you aren't doing your best and in an effort to win or achieve some further objective.

For me, I derive much of the "fun" in League from beating others. Otherwise, I'll play something else with friends in a cooperative mode.

As to why people rage in Normals? It's kind of like road rage where, for some reason, people take things very personally in League. The only other places I've seen it are in high-level raids where team coordination is absolutely key and in hyper-competitive first person shooter matches. In most games, what a teammate does doesn't really affect me directly. He does his thing, I do my thing, etc. Heck, in most games if a player is falling short I (or someone else) can step in and carry.

This is untrue in League. When a teammate fails, it makes the game extremely difficult for the others who haven't failed. I'll liken it to raid healing in World of Warcraft. If there are two healers in a not-very-difficult raid and one sucks at his job, the other often will be able to compensate. However, in a very tight raid where there's little margin for error, one failure means failure for everyone. This causes a sense of immediate frustration and then rage (especially if the failure is at something which is seen as being simple).

Oh, and there's attribution error. Basically, we ascribe bad things other people do to their personalities while we ascribe bad things which happen to us to circumstance. That guy is a crappy driver because he probably has some mental defect or is just a horrible person, vs. I got into an accident because someone came from my blindside and hit me. In League, it's "that guy is feeding because he's terrible/a troll," and "I'm feeding because I got CAMPED by their jungler."

AbyssionKnight2 votes

Teambuilder is useful for trying new champions, especially since you can tell your team when you join 'hey I know the basics of my champion, but still learning to use them' and your team can either keep you or reject you before the game ever starts. I find that most people in teambuilder are pretty accepting of people trying new champions, both in terms of champions they have little experience with, and champions that people don't normally play.

The only real downside to teambuilder is that your opponents can be a real mixed bag and not always useful to practice against. For the most part though, I think when it comes to getting accustomed to a new champ vs other people, teambuilder is the best place possible for that sort of thing.

  • Because losing in League is a slow and miserable experience.
  • Because winning is worth more IP, therefore I want to win.
  • Because I'm sick of having zero agency in these games, the worst player decides who wins and no-one else.
  • Because comebacks are nigh impossible most of the time, but people still refuse to surrender, so you end up wasting a solid 45 minutes of my time while the enemy Zed pads his kill count and won't even touch a tower.
  • Because you have no consideration for your teammates as you torment them.

The issue is rarely you doing badly once. The issue comes when you make the same mistake, or mistakes, multiple times. It doesn't matter if its ranked or normals. You should be able to recognize an issue and be able to self rectify it. Did you try and fight your opponent after already being killed a few times? Have you continued to push despite being ganked by their jungler over and over? Do you try and poke your opponent when you should be farming? The problem, 9/10 times, isn't your score. Its your inability to see your mistakes and learn from them.

If this was the case it would be one thing. But I was playing Ziggs the other day. I was shoving the lane hard because the enemy was veigar and his pushing power and turret farming is weak. So I did this once early on without warding, my mistake. He landed his stun, the enemy jungle olaf showed up and slowed me, and I just never got away. The second time I died was a straight up fight mid between me and veigar and I under estimated him and he had summoners and I didn't. The third death I roamed bot and attempted to gank. Their jungle showed up and their top TP'd to a ward bot and we lost the fight.

So I was 0-3 at like 15 mins or so. None of them were the same mistake. I was getting outplayed. And my top lane Irelia bashed me ALL game long. Told me to stop taking kills because I was trash etc etc. I ended up with the most kills, most damage, most assists but was still getting raged at.

If I was just running into enemies constantly over and over and not warding and dying, then it would be my fault.

These are the situations I am talking about.

I mostly play norms to try out new junglers (as silly as that is with the new jungle on the horizon) and I really couldn't care less about what the team does. AD Brand bot, mobos/furor Ezreal mid, AP Gnar in the same game? That's their choice, I'll just work on my counterjungling and laugh at the silliness of norms.

I do get some people raging (funniest was an adc yelling all game at the support zyra for upgrading the gold item and buying wards instead of rushing sightstone because "it saves money" or the diamond toplaner that actually thinks us mere mortals keep track of the enemy jungler and just countergank top all day instead of just getting fed off unwarded botlane), but it's usually kids doing badly and throwing a fit because they're behind. If you're trying a new champ, look up a video on how to play them before you try it in normals. Or play a bot game so you get a feel for the way to cs with them before trying them in normals. Don't just go first time means feeding is okay. {{summoner:2}}

http://www.ultimate-bravery.com/ <-- That's what i do in normals 90% of the time, It's fun which is what NORMALS are for they are FUN MATCHS, those raging asshats need to move on over to ranked if they are that worried about winning (Btw ranked is for people who want to win) Ignore them, Mute, Report, and move on.

Because over the course of our League lives, we just started caring about wins and nothing else.
