If You're Tanky Enough To Tank The Tower, TANK IT
God, I just lost a game because our RAMMUS was too scared to tank a tower and end the game.
Please, just tank the tower when minions are too far away.

I'm too paranoid of shitty team mates not following up if I do.
Pretty much this.

then you just walk away if they don't follow up when you tank the turret you act like tanking the turret as a tank will kill you, this excuse is trash
Corollary:
If I'm a 5,000 Health, 250 Armor Sejuani and I go in to tank a tower... FOLLOW THE FUCK UP!
The reason we don't do it is because our teammates who do damage don't follow up and we've just stood there tanking a tower while our allies take wolves and raptors.
If you want a tank to tank a turret, say so in all chat, and then follow up. If the turret's one hit from death and the enemy team is coming, kill the turret first so we can CC the crap out of them without tanking a turret's armor shred while fighting them.

OK!
OKAY OKAY KOAT OKAT OKAY OKAY OKAY OKAY
Feels like everyone is tanky enough to tank a turret these days.
I still think turrets could use a bit of a buff, but I think Riot likes having turret dives. They're kinda risky and often give an opportunity for nice outplays, which we all totally, not sarcastically at all need more of, of course.
The best way to get to someone to tank the tower or to make sure teammates follow up, is to target the tower with a ping. Sometimes people don't really think about that especially earlier in the game or someone might doubt if you can take it (like if you're tanky enough and if you have enough damage).
Same applies with dives, if you know you can get a kill and it's safe then target them or ping on the way. Too many times experienced/aware/smurfing players know what to do, but it doesn't happen because instead of communicating to the team they expect everyone to be on the same page.
you deal no damage to towers by tanking it
Tanking and hitting.
Everyone should read this!
As an
main, i have probably never encountered any issues with my team not following up my dives/tanking turrets when we ace'd the enemy team. I dont know if this is an elo thing, but i'm pretty sure that when our team knows we can push and get objectives and i tank the shots, we pretty much destroy the turrets for objective control.
if the tank doesn't want to go tank the tower, I ping and go tank it myself for a few hits. people will usually follow and then I can back off before dying
