Jayce: From A One-Trick Jayce Diamond Player

GG Thanks For LP·4/1/2018, 10:55:34 AM·28 votes·6,491 views

Hello everyone, I am GG Thanks For LP. I started the game in late Season 5, and have been playing Jayce every game in ranked for about 2 years now. I have over 3,000 games on Jayce, and I have tested almost every build/rune page on this champ that there is. I have tried every mechanic there is to Jayce during laning phase, mid game and late game. I peaked Diamond 3 with Diamond 1 MMR when S7 finished, finishing with a 70% wr on Jayce.

Now that the introduction is out of the way, I want to talk about a big problem with this game right now, which is damage. Its funny coming from a Jayce, the games best lane bully complaining about damage, but then again, it also ruins Jayce as the champion he is supposed to be. Jayce starts out with either Long Sword or Dorans blade and takes either Electrocute or Aery as his Keystone.

During one of my games, I was laning against a Camille. Back in Season 7, this would be a rather easy matchup for Jayce. I took Aery, took Long Sword as well to get the extra damage, and went to lane. Camille started Dorans Shield, and had Arcane Comet/Precision. We get to lane, we both get to Level 2, so then we decide to trade. I throw my Accelerated Shockblast at her, which costs about 115 manaish, and Camille uses Tactical Sweep on me (W). My 2 abilities did less than 5% of her health as damage, while her 1 ability, Tactical Sweep, did 25% of my health as damage. If there is a way to upload videos so I can show proof to the nonbelievers, I will.

That brings me to my argument. Why can someone who starts with Dorans Shield deal 25% of my health with 1 ability? While I, getting the 10 AD boost only does less that 5% of her health with an accelerated shock blast?

Jayce is sitting very low on good champs to play. Most sites are actually ranking him very close near the bottom of lists. He just provides nothing for his team anymore it seems. You can win lane, but once you do that, you cant 1v1 hardly anyone but the adc and support (at times). Almost every top laner now can destroy Jayce. Gnar/Rumble/Fiora/Riven are pretty much the only ones that go even or Jayce can win against in lane, and when was the last time you even seen one of those 4 champs played in the top lane? Riven is fairly common, but can destroy Jayce easily at level 6 if shes not beind.

As of now I am currently playing on smurf accounts, and finding it near impossible to even win in Silver games with Jayce. I have tried Aery, Electrocute, PTA, Conqueror, Comet, Dark Harvest, Predator, Grasp, AfterShock, Klepto, Glacial, and Fleet Footwork, I also used many different variations with each rune and NONE have I found to work as well on Jayce. Aery is decent, but its very useless mid/late game. Electrocute is good but everything else in the rune tree is not useful. Nothing worked in Precision for me. Grasp and Aftershock worked well in lane but made me feel useless in team fights. Klepto made me feel like I was doing the damage I needed to, but the rest of the rune page lacks things Jayce needs. Glacial worked well in lane and for roaming, but once again made me feel useless in team fights.

I have also tried every build there is on Jayce that works well.

Crit Jayce: item 3004 item 3047 item 3031 item 3142 item 3147 item 3094 OG Jayce: item 3071 item 3047 item 3142 item 3147 item 3033 item 3026 Defensive Jayce: item 3071 item 3047 item 3142 item 3110 item 3001 item 3147 Roam/Assassin Jayce: item 3142 item 3117 item 3147 item 3814 item 3134 item 3036 MR Jayce: item 3142 item 3111 item 3156 item 3071 item 3139 item 3026

And not one has proven to do good. In season 7, I used every one of these builds in situational times. Was the team squishy and im fed? Go Assassin Jayce. Was my team a late game team comp? Go Crit Jayce. Was it just a standard Gnar/Darius fight? Go OG Jayce. Was the enemy team getting a lot of kills? Go Defensive Jayce. Does the enemy team have a Brand, malz and veigar? Go MR Jayce. I have made it to Diamond on several accounts using these builds as well, but sadly this season, none work.

My suggestion for fixing. Nerfs needed on Dorans Shield. Health and healing granted in the Resolve tree need lowering. If someone takes Resolve as primary, make them have health only instead of splitting it with damage/health. Buff Sudden Impact, and add a new rune to the Bounty hunter stack in Domination Tree that adds adaptable Lethality/Magic pen per kill. In Season 7, I would take 14 Lethality and 8 ad for my runes, and thats a huge part of the problem im having playing Jayce now. Nerf minion damage, I dont enjoy autoing an enemy then taking 14 damage per auto from enemy minion (this isnt too bad but just a suggestion). Buff Jayce's W back from 110% damage to 130% damage while also reverting his Shockblast back down 20 damage. Now these are just suggestions, that doesnt mean Id want them all, but itd at least fix the damage problem im having in the top lane. Instead of having unfair fights because the enemy bought Dorans Shield and can deal 25% of my health with it.

TLDR; Jayce is lacking right now, rune pages are a bit sloppy and need tweaking/looked at. Resolve needs nerfed with health and healing given. No real rune page or build works on Jayce. Dorans Shield needs nerfing. Jayce can hardly win against most matchups now even though hes supposed to be the best lane bully in the game.

Good thing. You had two seasons of jayce being busted af to abuse some freelo. Now time is over. It's beyond me how jayce players have the guts to complain. The only champion in the game that wins every lane by default for picking jayce and snowballing into never really falling off. The moment jayce gets some counterplay added we can think about nerfing resolve and other anti bully mechanics. Like forcing him to build tear again. Remove his passive melee armor/mr. There are several ways to do that.

NERF MINION DAMAGE HAAHHAAHAHAHA Do you think we enjoy getting auto'd to death with no counterplay? I'm done. Holy shit.

I'm just gonna say that since you "love smurfing" so much, I have no sympathy for you. You abused a broken ass champ in ELOs you didn't belong. There is nothing worse in low elo than facing a smurfing Jayce, Riven or any other hard carry top laner. It literally feels hopeless much of the time and the game isn't fun.

"i like smurfing" "i play top lane jayce" "i'm sad cause my champion isn't the most broken thing in the game anymore"

go play him mid lane where his actually good and stop smurfing fukboi

This is almost comical.

Jayce was damn near the god of top lane for 2 seasons straight, and now that he isnt youre upset with the stat of the game. Funny how that works.

Pretty sure Jayce is not the problem if you were diamond last season and are now struggling in silver games.

I see there’s a lot of butthurt people in here. Must be that Yasuo effect where people don’t know how to counter your champion so instantly claim it’s busted.

Even if you make him better in lane, he still has little impact on games overall (as a top laner).

Unless you have some kind of global presence, the game is usually more or less decided by the time you can leave top.

As a top laner he can still be oppressive solely because he's ranged.

As a permanent resident of Silver, I can say it's not really the champion. Games are almost impossible to carry due to the excessive amount of feeding in Season 8. Like you, I'm also a 1 trick but with Kayle. Last season I had a very realistic shot at finally making it to Gold. If not for tilting, I just might have made it. I'm finding in Season 8, I can barely make it out of Silver 5.

You seem to think the problem is Jayce's damage and his inability to duel in the top lane, while I won't debate that since, for one thing, you're Diamond and also, I never played Jayce, I will urge you to consider an alternative reasoning. As far as I can tell, the problem is team leads. It used to be in recent seasons that when an enemy lane got fed, you had to play around him to win and he had to put an effort to actually use his lead to carry. However, since season 5 when I started, Riot added an excessive amount of ridiculous snowball elements. First blood turret, global gold, Rift Herald, mountain drake, infernal drake, Baron got buffed, weaker turrets. So we have a situation in season 8 where one lane gets ahead and that easily translates into the team being ahead. So now instead of one fed person beating the shit out of your team, the entire team is beating the shit out of your team because that one losing lane, usually but not always bot lane.

So while Jayce might feel weaker, it might be due to this. Global gold and first blood turret could mean the enemy team gets to build that armor sooner than they would have in previous seasons. Infernal drakes mean they get free offensive stats which may push their damage to the point where it's more risky for you to duel them. Mountain drakes, weaker turrets, Rift Herald and the buffed Baron means the winning team gets more gold much faster than in previous seasons by being able to take turrets at a phenomenal rate, sometimes two to three turrets in a row, which again, through global gold means they can buy more armor. Having this armor or damage much earlier could lead you to believe that Jayce is weaker. You're just not used to winning enemy teams getting so much gold and/or free stats so fast.

Now, not saying this as a fact. I could be totally wrong. This is just my opinion. But something definitely changed about the core gameplay in the past two seasons and games are definitely much much harder to solo carry. Bottom line, I think the game has a deeper problem than just the individual champions themselves. League genuinely feels like Heroes of the Storm now. For those of you that may not know, Hots is built around team leads. There is no such thing as solo carrying in Hots. League is becoming like that. It's not quite there yet but it will be if these changes keep up. It's also one of the reasons I can't stand to play Hots for too long.

That name, as expected of a Jayce player

Not really sure what Jayce needs. I feel like his lane phase is pretty acceptable, even tho a Camille beat you up. But he doesn't really bring much into the late game, since having an assassin in the top lane is kind of a handicap.

Maybe his melee form could see some changes to promote him into being played as more of a bruiser
