Everything I find wrong about the new Aatrox
I've played new Aatrox in a fair few games the past couple of days, and I fully relate to anyone saying he's a clunky and weak mess; here are my thoughts on his rework.
Passive: Aatrox's new passive is really weird and it seems to contradict a lot about how Riot wants you to play the champion. New Aatrox is heavily reliant on spacing and ability hits, and in that environment, auto attacks are the last thing on your mind. Personally, I hardly got a chance to start a fight with my auto attack (which is the intention as ability hits reset the cooldown), because I would always start a fight with my Q as it's a much larger range than my empowered auto attack. Regardless of my opinion to his passive not really fitting his kit, I'm absolutely fucking perplexed that you can hit minions with the passive setting it on cd. Yeah because you gotta stop minions from healing and shielding right riot? I want his passive for enemy CHAMPIONS, and I want to have it up for when we do trade, it's just another odd choice to useability.
Q This is the big one which has a lot of people calling out the rework as clumsy, (and rightly so). Inherently, I don't really have a problem with the Q being immobile, but what I do have a problem with is it's insanely high cast speed/down time between Q's. Waiting up to 3 seconds on an ability that is immobile is unjustifiable. If I've caught someone out, and I want to hit all of my Q's, the chances of that enemy champion remaining in place while I wait 1 second between casts is EXTREMELY fucking low. There is no fluidity to the ability, and no real payoff for the ability being this slow. The damage is low, and you're not rewarded enough for hitting the sweet spots. I also feel the sweet spots don't line up with the visuals a lot of the time.
W This ability is really strange... See if you cast a W and try and chase the enemy champion, and if he does in fact stay in the radius, he'll just shoot back to you in melee range. Why would you chance them if you have you W on them you say? Because it's also extremely unreliable. If you cast W and pull back so you can set up your Q (no doubt the intended purpose), the likely hood of the enemy running out of the radius has increased exponentially. Why it has only a 15% slow level 1 I won't fucking know. It's honestly laughable how little of an impact this ability makes with synergising with your other abilities. Like, 15% slow? Are you fucking kidding me Riot?
E
- 3 second cooldown between dashes (if you have two charges)
- Only a 1.5 second duration on the damage buff
- Its potential is being restricted because Q is immobile, so its only purpose is to supplement Q.
- Pretty crappy dash compared to all other top laners.
R Compared to the old Aatrox ultimate, this is just pathetic. Its contribution to a fight is so minimal, I don't even know where to begin. What does this ultimate contribute to a fight? 20% AD bonus attack damage. Okay. So the only benefit is limited to how far the game progresses. If you've just hit level 6 and only bought 20 AD, guess how much damage you get from this ultimate? That's right kids! 4AD! The only use I've gotten from this ult is similar to how Pykes W works, a huge movespeed bonus for getting out of tight situations. The fact that you receive almost nothing for for casting this ultimate is depressing, heck, you don't even get rewarded for filling your blood well to 100% like the old Aatrox.
So anyway, those are my thoughts, pardon any errors, but it depresses me to even look over what I wrote, heck I almost gave up half way making this post because it was too overwhelming to list everything wrong with him. Riot, you've been falling down the ladder quite a while recently.
