PSA: Winning Does NOT Nullify Toxic Behavior

blacknerdtaku··202 votes·11,023 views

Ever had to put up with an annoying toxic, game ruining individual all game, just to win it through some miracle and be told "you won so who cares?"

Well, this Syndra in my previous game (which was ranked) spammed GG all game. She walked into my lane (Top) demanded i go mId, and when i told her to go back to her lane, she stole CS, and then proceeded to get murdered, this is after giving 2 kills to riven (who went mid). Every time she died she spammed "I told you it was GG" all game. She threatened to afk on multiple occasions, and made the game a living hell. if it were not for our jinx, we would have lost. and when a little bit of hope for the game came, she then began to call us all noobs, and verbally abuse the team for sucking, and not listening to her every word.

We asked to just report her for trolling us. the enemy team responded. We won the game, and guess what happened? "well you won, so it doesn't matter."

Here's the deal: IT DOES MATTER Winning the game doesn't suddenly make all the shit this player put her team through A-ok. No, this person made it her mission to make the game a HORRIBLE, unfun, and frustrating time for everyone on her team. and we managed to pull through without much help from her. we had to pull her weight, and endure her horrible attitude for 40 minutes. It was so bad, the win didn't even feel good because we won, but because I wouldn't have to see this person again. and you know what? I can almost guarantee she will do this to others.

the reason we report isn't because of salt. We report because that person broke the rules of the game, and made another player's experience a living hell, and in this case, because i know that this person will do it again, and cost a LOT of MMR for innocent players, until somebody steps up and punishes them.

**TL:DR read the title **

A player was toxic all game, but carried your team. What should you do? A. Honor B. Report C. Do nothing

Report that person. It doesn't matter how good they are. If they're toxic, they need to be reformed.

You Forgot: D. Leave the game the moment the Post screen appears.

Reformed? You honestly think that the punishments toxic players receive actually reform and help the situation. That's hilarious. Chat restrictions/Ranked restrictions are easily rid of, and when banned, they just make a smurf, ruin the game for lower level by being extremely toxic and being more experienced. The punishments do nothing but make the toxic people worse. Just use the mute button, 100% more effective. They will stop being toxic if you stop egging them on.

Troll for Trump5 votes

yeah that's right let's use the mute button in solo queu, mute everyone and communicate with no one the whole game, and get reported postgame for refusing to communicate.

I once had a Heim on the enemy team pull this method, even though it made no sense xD

4 of us were trying to kill him....we keep failing so he began mocking us until they won

Heimerdinger : Come at me bro! i got Jukes!

Sejuani : And i got Mutes.

Heimerdinger : Reported.

So your reporting me for muting you for not wanting to deal with your ridicule in chat? xD

(at that time i was a bit on tilt so i tend to insta-mute when i see that the other team start acting cocky in chat)

ROFL! I wasn't even mad, i found the "reported" response to be hilarious, it actually lightened my mood. I Mean we were not even on the same team so why report me for muting you? people are so weird sometimes. XXD

People report if you disagree with them.

k then so you would rather lose and have someone who's not toxic then win with someone you could just mute?

I don't agree with this, you can mute him and problem solved, he is playing good and carrying the game, basically this type of player can be dealt with a simple mute button while the syndra fed and stole cs, hard to deal with her ingame.

Muting does not solve the toxic behavior. The toxic behavior has already occurred and affected the players in the gaming. Muting is a response to the behavior. The intent of the systems is to try and reduce toxic behavior before it starts. Muting does not resolve this.

WreckOnPorpoise

a true sign of ignorance. muting solves the problem 100%. unfortunately you cant mute bad players, feeders, trolls, afks, etc.... but yes, the mute button fixes the EXACT problem you speak of.

I'd say you're a bit ignorant in this regard then. While what you list is also a problem, muting does not solve the problem - especially not 100%. Muting is a response to a problem that has already occurred. It's a reactive solution that forces the person or people being negatively affected to respond with. Focus on that. If you're muting someone, then you have already been 'harmed' by toxic behavior. Muting reduces future toxic behavior via chat but it does not remove the toxic behavior that happens.

Please don't speak so harshly about something like this also. "a true sign of ignorance" is a rather inflammatory statement and one that shows your own ignorance, if I play that card back at you.

WreckOnPorpoise5 votes

if you are so overly sensitive, id say the internet is not for you. maybe try the local preschool and see if you can stay up to speed. almost all "solutions" are reactive....they "solve problems", especially when it comes to social media/interaction. maybe blizzard did it right with hearthstones "no chat" "preventive" solution. as far as "harmful behavior", id rather have 4 good players that talk shit, than 4 nice, kind, cuddly, and ever so friendly terribads. maybe they can make a separate ranked division for "nice losers".

RiotRoboLions40 votes

If you are so callous maybe LoL isn't for you. Despite your personal opinion or anecdotal experience, our philosophy, based on interacting with millions of players, is that this behavior is not acceptable to LoL Players. Just because the Wild West was wild didn't mean that the wild things people did in those times were ok, the same is true for the internet and toxicity.

Firu6 votes

Thanks for the reply. I know Riot does take the game atmosphere seriously and has done tons of work to make it a better place.

Clearly the poster I (and you) responded too has a different view on what makes a healthy game environment. The problem is that that his (or hers) particular view comes at a cost. Further, it ignores the fact that good (skillful) players can also be polite players. It is not one or the other. I'm not (nor are others) saying everyone must be like the best people in the world. All that is required is that players just don't actively act rude. I don't require a thank you after every good play. I just don't want someone personally insulting me after every bad one.

WreckOnPorpoise3 votes

a red cant post on the actual problem, but they can post on this? i'd say i fit right in with the competitive players, perhaps i dont fit in with the intentional trolls, the afks, the feeders, the bad because you cant tell me how to play guys, the im trying my best and im nice 0-19 guys...but i assure you i do fit in with the players who read every update, play every pbe cycle, try every tip to improve gameplay, do whatever they can to win. now how about a constructive red post? please?

RiotRoboLions24 votes

We make a lot of posts addressing many problems, both related to player toxicity and many many other topics.

We have made our stance on this subject clear in the past, as someone who reads all the updates, etc, you already know all the things I said yet actively campaigned in this thread for the opposite.

My purpose in posting here was to point out that, when it comes to LoL, you are in the wrong about player behavior and toxicity and it is up to you to change your attitude about this subject. If you cannot be happy with a system that follows that philosophy then you should endeavor to find another game where you can be happy.

Beacon 0F Light13 votes

I'm really loving all the red activity recently, and the fact that you guys are even posting on things like this and not just balance-related stuff is admirable. Keep it up!

i could care less about what players "say", i care about how they play. if i wanted to bullshit all day with "nice" people id go on twitter or facebook and play those *ville games. i play a moba that is considered competitive to be competitive. if you dont feel the same way, que normals, bots, or arams. my attitude is charlie sheen, aka winning.

Angry Monster7 votes

you might want to take a closer look at how much winning charlie sheen is doing. You might want to readdress your role models choices and come up with something than a lame meme.

KAYLE TURBO INT2 votes

I'm sorry that I have to agree with this thing here but LoL has too much of a glass house approach to this; not everyone should have to be a happy go lucky puppy or a nice guy. There shouldn't be chat bans and rewards taken away for simple comments like 'gg ez' or other such simple words. If these people are living in the real world then they should be able to take a few snide or arrogant snippets of banter.

Angry Monster3 votes

see you do not have to be a happy person. All you have to do is not be a jerk while typing.

Players that play solely to the purpose of winning, sometimes forget that writing negative comments makes your teammates either slowly tilt or mute the player. Both of which isn't something anyone on the team would want. If you mute a player, you can't hear him/her harrass you, but, at the same time it's makes it hard to plan a gank or a teamfight. If he/she isn't muted, the players teammates will often lose morale. And though morale and kindness may not seem like important concepts in a competitive game like LoL, they certainly are. If you have ever tried tilting, you can feel the difference between playing a game when you just came back from a long break and playing a game when you just lost 2 games in a row.

I'm ashamed that I, as a 14 year-old teen have to write to someone probably much older, but seemingly not very mature in this way. I really hope you'll read what I write, because if you don't care about other people, well why should they care about you? Someone could write "I hate you!", but would you want them to do that, honestly? I don't believe that we humans or either good or evil, like in some D&D game. If we are, we must all be a mix of both somehow. You're not an evil person, but maybe you're just having a hard time putting yourself in the shoes of others, I can't know. Likewise, just because the players aren't playing all that good, doesn't mean they're bad players, it might be someone tilting them or they just had a bad day because of something or someone. Don't be that someone.

Just something to think of, I hope it makes sense

WreckOnPorpoise2 votes

bad players need to practice or find somewhere else to bang their head on a wall nonstop where it doesnt affect 9 other people. you can try to sugar coat it any way you want but NOONE enjoys 65minute 90-12 losses where you have 3-4 total idiots on your team. which happens in at least 7/10 games for one side. then 2/10 games have those trolls who is just trying to ruin the game and usually succeeds. the 1/10 game that is evenly matched and super close......that is the only reason i still play because that 1 game is that good.

lunien1 votes

You might not enjoy it. But making other people annoyed makes everyone even more tilted.

WreckOnPorpoise1 votes

help me enjoy the 99% of games that have at least 4 players on either team with scores like 0-18-5, 1-11-7, 0-6-0, 2-10-5, 9-1-2 vs 11-0-8, 13-4-10, 6-5-10, 19-0-4, 0-4-20 (that is a typical game, not an actual copy paste.) tell me how is that fun for either side? now once every 9-12 games i get a game that goes like 28vs29 or has a comeback win, now THOSE games are fun.

again you missed the point, so let me sharpen it and make it rapidly reciprocating towards you. i DONT enjoy landslide wins or losses. i DONT enjoy polite, nice, friendly feeders that go 0-19-0. i DONT enjoy 65minute losses where team refuses to surrender even though we have an afk and the score is 26-74 with all towers down on our side and none down on theirs.

if you enjoy those things you are sick and need to seek counseling.

lunien2 votes

Sorry, I won't argue with you, since you seem to believe a lot in your own opinion, but not respect (that sounds a bit... arrogant, I know, but I'm serious about it) the opinions of others.

There is no excuse for toxicity. Ever. Period. Doesn't matter if you didn't start it, or if you won, or even if you're in the LCS. Poor behavior is poor behavior and should be punished accordingly in every situation.

except when Riot has their prisoners island and punishes the deaththreat people and the "Please stop doing ___ " people together. I got report for literally saying this "ali pls stop using your W to knock people away from our team" and then he and his premade ADC started spouting bs about me being toxic and to report me in all chat.

Icestar11866 votes

You may have been reported, but I doubt you got even a chat restriction.

JAGMAG1 votes

well there's no excuse for not using the mute button and honestly i feel treated pretty badly if my team is feeding their faces off

Beacon 0F Light12 votes

Unless it's intentional feeding there's nothing wrong or punishable about playing poorly.

JAGMAG1 votes

its not punishable but it ruins my game harder then a flamer

Beacon 0F Light8 votes

Really? In my experience I have a much better time with friendly lost games than toxic won games. My perspective is that the most important thing is to be polite and friendly and have a good time, and I've done both in heavily lost games. Winning isn't really important at all.

JAGMAG2 votes

well i only play ranked so losing=bad were in normals idc i tend to troll normals (by troll i mean AS shen)

Beacon 0F Light9 votes

What's the point of playing, even if it's ranked, if you don't have fun doing so? I mean yeah, I also play more serious in ranked than normals, but I still try to enjoy myself even if I lose.

WreckOnPorpoise1 votes

wow.....i hope if i do see you in ranked....it is on the enemy team.

Beacon 0F Light6 votes

Sad that you assume I'm a troll or something just from what I've said. I still try my best.

Edit: Wow okay just saw some of your recent comments. Now I understand. You're definitely part of the problem.

Bandit King Z3 votes

Nobody likes losing, that's a no brainer. But being outplayed is simply that. Being an overall asshole, winning or losing, is a choice and a poor display of character. It is toxic and this community doesn't need it. I have fun even when losing, granted I don't play ranked yet cuz I have a fun time on a game with like minded people who like to have fun. Playing a game. Wild concept.

JAGMAG2 votes

i never said how i treated them........but there's a difference from being outplayed and you just sucking hard

Bandit King Z4 votes

Then make friends and form a team of people you trust? I mean that's all the nature of the game, also the nature of pugging in solo ranked.

Also I wasn't really speaking to what you do, but more over, being an asshole is NOT a part of this game. Winning and losing is.

Bandit King Z2 votes

I agree 100%. Honestly I think there needs to be a pretty severe culling in general. IP ban em.
