Ryze Tips?

DISCLAIMER - Yes, I know how to faceroll with him. I know how to chain properly and position while spell slinging.

I love Ryze. His DPS is insane, he gets naturally tanky, but I have some problems with him I can't figure out.

How do I build Ryze? Some people build Frozen Heart, but I find the CDR wasted so I keep away from it. Does Ryze build mostly full AP? Or do you build more like a fighter? I'm scared if I build him tanky I won't have any damage, but I don't know.

How do I teamfight? I know there are glorious times where Ryze can absolutely incinerate teams, but I don't know how I can get to that point. Do I need lots of peel/CC to demolish? I always get focused too and die rather fast. I can move around slowly while spell slinging but I still get wrecked.

Standard Ryze build:

ITEMS • RoA • SE • Sorc's • Zhonya's • Rabadon's • Void Staff

RUNES 9x Magic pen. 9x Armor seals 6x CD glyphs 3x Scaling CD glyphs 3x AP quints (CDR glyphs to hit that 40% lvl18)

I'm thinking a good tanky build would look like this:

ITEMS • RoA • SE • Merc's • Frozen • Rabadon's • Spirit Visage

RUNES 9x Magic pen. 9x Scaling HP seals 9x Scaling MR glyphs 3x AP quints

Also... Masteries? I thought Deathfire works because of all his spell spamming and magic pen. Thunderlords is fine (no explaination needed) and even Stormraider's for super speed. 45% isn't really noticeable, but I'll take it on Ryze...

Help.

I think I read somewhere that the math adds up to mana giving more damage than AP, so tanky shouldn't be bad at all. However, you'd definitely get more out of rushing a tear and catalyst. RoA first, then SE when your tear is stacked. After that, I think you can go straight mana/tank items and still dish out way more damage than you should.

Also, on champs like Ryze where positioning is really important, I think MS quints would be better. Just so you can get to a spot to hit your Q that much faster.

Don't take my advice as if I were some Ryze god or something. I'm pretty terrible with him. These are just things that I know.

I was saving up for some MS quints because I play a lot of immobile champs. I think they would be great on Ryze. I'll check out the mana scaling. I've read a few guides on Ryze but they never really explain why to build tanky/AP.

With Ryze being super short range, you're probably going to want movespeed more than anything. This is compounded by the most popular champions having extremely high movespeed and dashes and whatnot.

As it was mentioned above, I'd grab some movespeed quints and I would even go so far as to build item 1306.

It might seem like overkill on movespeed, but when your range is that short you'll love it.

I've had really big problems when trying to chase people or initiate a duel as he does his animation to cast a spell/snare but he is too slow. 440 MS with those boots and quints would probably help a lot.

It also helps to have a lot of leeway before you cast when you've got restrictive animations. Edgecasting with Ryze's snare will almost never work on a fleeing target. There's a few other spells where this is also the case.

Agreed. Thanks for the tips!

Oh. One more thing on movespeed. It might be tempting to build item 1326 because of higher numbers, but keep in mind that the moment you enter combat (Which is defined by taking any sort of damage from anything) that the movespeed on those boots drops like a rock. My personal motto is that you want constant movespeed more than short bursts.

Make sure smartcast is on obviously. Ryze (just making sure) is a TOP LANE champion. My personal build is Rush your tear, as your insanely mana hungry. Don't use spells to last hit unless you can secure multiple with you E. Poke your lane opponent with your spells and AA's every once in awhile. If you can't figure out the masteries to use pls uninstall. Start Dorans Ring or dark seal, with 2 pots. Play passive if ring, aggressively if seal. After tear, rush ROA, followed by Abyssal scepter, as his short spell casting range is a must with his kit. After these items, finish your arch/seraph to get the bonus AP. Sorcerers for damage/more DPS. Merc if magic heavy enemy, tabi if physical, CDR if you don't get visage. If you go sorcerers, skip void staff, you will still deal tons of damage lmao. While it may not seem so, zhonyas is strong on ryze for tanky builds. In total, the last item to build is probably spirit visage (for 45% CDR) or liandrys ( For health burn)This set should give you a large diversity of stats, as well as some mana regen. If need be, replace one of the items for another mana item, though it may not be needed. Now that I look at it it makes no sense to build in this order, but eh.

Thanks for the insight on masteries.

Really though.... EDIT: If you really need it, thunderlords with 45 CDR, go tanky for rest.
