Let's be honest about auto-fill

Not only does auto-fill put you in a role you don't want, it usually skews you in favour of the enemy team. You can go even in your auto-filled role but 7 if not 8 out of 10 auto-filled games, your team would be the one feeding and you aren't able to hard carry. Auto-filled would be much better if the match would be put in your favour as you are the one playing an unfamiliar role.

Let's all be honest. Players these days are coddled because they don't actually have to learn other roles. Back in the day before role selection even became a thing, people had to come to agreements in champ select what role they would play, and this was often determined by pick priority. In those days, YOU HAD to know how to play multiple roles, and it made everyone better players because it gave them better game knowledge, versatility, and more awareness of the map and the value of warding.

Nowadays, people cry and scream when they have to play a role that's not the one they one-trick. Simply learn more roles in the game. It will legitimately improve you as a player, and not "skew you in favor of the enemy team" because of your inability to be flexible.

Agreed. I miss pick order. That made everyone learn every role. Riot isn't going to bring back that system, so the next be thing is for the matchmaking to put the autofilled team to be red because red team always has the higher average mmr.

I agree, it would be a lot better if people were expected to learn multiple roles.

This is part of the reason why I think it would be important to have rank by role.

"Oh hey, you're a Diamond player, but you're absolute dog-sh*t as a jungler. .. woop-de-doo"

This would give people a better way of comparing their skills in that specific role vs other players in the same role.

And your overall rank should be determined by an accumulation of your top 3 positions.

This again encourages players to be able to play multiple roles, but also encourages them to climb in multiple roles. It also allows for players to not be crippled by a role that they are significantly less skilled in and chose not to invest time into playing.

You mean "first call" if i'm last pick and "first pick" if i'm top of list for picking champs. And that whole argument would ensue back and forth... generally with "first pick" winning. A whole lot of "player x first called position y" posting and counter-posting before one of the two methods was settled on too.

Your points about making people better players is 100% true. Nowadays you can see someone get their main role and if they don't get the favorite pick, they feed. Or they see some new "op boosting strat" or whatnot and decide to copy pasta it without understanding how/why it is good. So they end up playing poorly and making the game infinitely harder to win. I don't main jungle, but when I do play jungle, I'm better than over 50% of the jungle mains at my elo. I used to main support and don't now for over 2 seasons. But when I autofill support I at least go even in most games... and am more likely to 2v2 or even 2v3 (enemy jg be damned) snowball ahead than feed provided my adc isn't completely boosted.

And the funny thing is... support is the role that best prepares you to play other roles and can most easily be transitioned to. Play adc? Mf support is a thing. Play assassins? Pyke is a thing. Play mages? Brand, zyra, etc. are viable as supports. Play tanks? There's leona, naut, etc. Literally a viable support pick that matches the role you'd play in nearly every other position. With some being skillshot focused and others being very much point-n-click. Like you said... coddled players these days.

See, that's not really the biggest issue here. While I may not mind being autofilled, I'm much more concerned if one of my teammates gets autofilled. Most of the time, if a teammate gets autofilled, it's basically an afk lane for the enemy laner.

Hence the issue that players are coddled and not required to know multiple roles.

Many players will refuse to learn multiple roles, no matter how you set up the system. If they don't get they role they want, they will just grief.

In my opinion, this is because when people are auto-filled, they are placed in a role that they are less familiar / comfortable / skilled in, but still in a division that is based on the rank they have obtained from their main role.

A Diamond Mid laner is not likely to be a Diamond Support.

If instead we were given a rank by role, when we get auto-filled, we should get placed in a division that is more suitable for our skill in that role.

This would also encourage players to improve their skills in multiple roles because someone in the situation I mentioned previously is not likely to try and queue up as a support in order to improve, knowing they are going to be placed against opponents with a significantly higher level.

I heard rank-by-role was supposed to be coming next season, ... but I haven't heard any more about it recently.
