@Riot, What reason would I pick Viktor post changes?

DrCyanide··88 votes·2,988 views

I'm trying to imagine what situation I'd want to pick Viktor post changes, and I'm coming short. Currently I'd say I'd want to pick Viktor situations where I need both ranged waveclear/poke, but where point-and-click damage is necessary to deal with a mobile target.

Looking at these changes on paper, it looks like I would want to pick new Viktor into a team where the enemy team is comprised of soon-to-be-released Snail Champions with 200 movement speed. Until 5-man Snail Team is viable though, I'm not seeing any reason to pick him. If all he can do is clear a minion wave and zone an area, then there's no reason to pick him over any other mage.

You'll play him for a... spammable, mana-scaling shield????

I give up.

I did say spammable, didn't I?

Ryze's shield definitely doesn't have a 4 second cooldown.

If you run a cc heavy combo. He might have some issues on his own, though it's not half as bad as people make it out to be, even without the followup from the E explosion, Q+E does some quite good damage and he gains more shield than befor. But the big thing is, if you have cc from your mates and can follow up on it, the impact is massive. His full E hits for 390+1.1ap, and the full ult reaches 1300 +2.3ap damage, both on aoe. If his team can set him up, he can provid all the damage you need to kill an entier team.

My Waifu Vanilla3 votes

Except your statements contradict each other for a bit. He relies on ally CC to do much and gets a big shield for fighting. The thing is that if he gets a big shield for fighting and relies on them being CC'ed to reliably fight......what good is the shield?

Auryiel16 votes

Yeah, if you can lock down a target FOR A WHOLE 6 SECONDS Viktor can do good damage

WOW

Who even needs AD carries when Viktor is here

Sire Hippington2 votes

his ult still moves faster than most champs, you don't need much lockdown for it, and 2 sec is by far enough to kill almost anything that isn't a tank. Infact, get the W stun off in lane and you probbably have a kill post 6, and landing the stun isn't impossible by any means.

Civet103 votes

remember that his ult moves... they don't have to be stunned in it for it to do full damage, and his e only has the 1.25 second delay (which i will agree sucks) and because of that he only needs a 1 second stun for it to hit. I think that they're making his teamfight a LOT better, and buffing his waveclear, but nerfing his laning early to make up for it

Civet101 votes

Keep in mind in not FOR the changes, im just explaining the reasoning

Jungle Lux God2 votes

Actually Viktor ultimate breaks about with a full live ultimate with 1 tick at rank 1 and 2 ticks at rank 3. In other words, Viktor deals as much damage with 7 seconds on his live ulti as he does with 2-4 seconds of his PBE ulti.

Jorencice1 votes

If you lock then down for 2 seconds new Viktor does more than old viktor.

Ulquiorra9954 votes

As a waveclear mage.

Because that's the only thing you'll be able to do. Clear waves. You'll never hit laser or good ult on an opponent that hasn't suddenly fallen asleep or disconnected.

Scoroct4 votes

Honestly he would be picked in 5mans for waveclear and zone control/wombo comps similar to anivia.

When compared with the champ most similar to him post changes (anivia, they both offer excellent waveclear and massive zone control), his advantage would be far better mobility and excellent single target dps dmg with his Q (a lichbane and rylai make him a kiting god with it and the initial dmg from lazor helps with it too) but in return he lacks the cc to set up his aoe dmg from E and R. He would also offer some mediocre poke that anivia lacks any form of.

He would not be great for climbing in soloque because you sorta hope your team knows you need cc and if you get it you become a god similar to current illaoi or MF (massive potential teamfight dmg, little cc to set it up) and your dmg could potentially kill a whole team. He would still be able to get some of it off of course, but it wouldnt be as reliable as current viktor's dmg is.

Based on his torn kite mage dps goal with his Q (and the fact that he can move while casting E) and his massive aoe dmg goal with E and R he would be like a weird version of how TF kites around a battle offering dps and how anivia sets up giant "danger zones" for the enemy team, all in one champion. Oh and he would offer excessively good waveclear rivaled only by anivia and a few others.

He would probably see competitive/organized play but have mixed reliability in soloque.

Waveclear and wombo combo potential? So why pick him over Vel'Koz, Heimerdinger, Orianna, or other options? His waveclear is getting nerfed pretty significantly in favor of Q trades.

Scoroct3 votes

Actually his waveclear will be godlike with the E augment causing the total lazor dmg with explosion to do 390 dmg with a 1.1 ap ratio, and luckily minions are dumb and likely to be hit with the entire lazor dmg. He can just max E, get E augment and when it starts oneshotting the wave (which doesnt even require max rank) he can then change to maxing Q or just finishing maxing E based on what he wants to do more (better potential in teamfights or better reliable but single target dmg).

As far as picking him vs the others, orianna does far less dmg overall if Vitkor can land at least 1 ult tick besides the intitial and/or the E explosion, velkoz is an artillery mage and not a disruptor so I will not compare them as the classes sorta define their different strengths, and heimerdinger lacks damage without his turrets which easily die to any aoe abilities late game, but both do offer pretty good zone control and dps through their ults thought heimer turrets have a tendency to focus enemies down one at a time instead of hitting multiple enemies at once like viktor.

He honestly outdamages most mages if he lands his E explosion and at least one additional tick of dmg after the initial part of his ult.

I'm not necessarily defending the changes, cause even with all I have said idk if I would recommend him in soloque actually, but I did want to answer why he would be picked which the thread asks and I felt compelled to answer since I see what riot is trying to turn him into: a disruptor mage with zone control and waveclear instead of the aoe burst mage he used to be (i initially thought they wanted him to be a battle mage but he doesnt have good enough defenses and instead he changes the entire battlefield with his abilites). The fact that these changes change the type of mage he will be and thus his playstyle really sucks for those who play him currently, myself included.

I'm not a fan of the lazor delay at all personally, and I feel the ult should have faster tick rate with more smoothed out dps (honestly the dps ult instead of burst ult makes more sense to me so I like the idea of that change if not the exact execution of it).

I am just hoping to answer what he role he would play on a team and why you would pick him assuming the changes go through. Is he good enough at what he tries to do? Idk since i cant test it a lot and can only watch footage of gameplay, but I figured I would answer why you would pick him, though if it wasnt for the fact that I love him as a character and thematically, I probably wouldnt play him since he just seems too unreliable without team help. In things like LCS though, I feel they might pick him for the reasons I mentioned.

TLDR: he has very strong zone control due to the potential for honestly absurd amounts of dmg if its, and absurdly good waveclear.

Hope this helps at least give insight and hope i didnt come off mean or anything, just adding to discussion since you do bring up good follow up questions.

You know laser isn't actually spelled "lazor", right?

Scoroct1 votes

yeah, its just fun to spell it that way :D

DrCyanide1 votes

I appreciate the attempt to break down why you'd pick him.

I think part of my fear is that "waveclear, zone control, with a side of mobility" was what they shoved Ziggs into after Season 4. There hasn't been enough of a reason to pick him since then (although I do like the direction his changes are going), and it looks like Viktor is on the same path.

Scoroct1 votes

Ahh yeah that is i guess part of what ziggs does. Now that i think about it ziggs is basically an artillery mage with some disruption. One noteable difference between them is that viktor has his Q giving him that kite mage feel, but I will miss the feel of the old deathray that nukes enemies for half their hp reliably if you can aim it.

Aakesh3 votes

Sure some one being withered and summoner 3 move faster then Viktor new E

Wheatloaf2 votes

I imagine they're trying to push his zone control, though this is an odd way to do it.

MrWasjig1 votes

The problem with that is that if these changes go through there will be other mages that can do zone control, better, and with more reliable damage. See Anivia and Orianna as two examples off the bat :P

As much as i hate the changes Its likely that he would become a decent Zoner but thats it

Death Ray2 votes

The only things that viktor will be zoning are minions, that's about it.

ThatHaleState1 votes

That just might be the point. Viktor has been a staple and pickable against anything for so long, that they are making changes to give other mages a chance to shine. Or to actually make you have to think when to pick him

Barrclaw1 votes

Something that we aren't even mentioning here is that Riot has said that they wanted to give a team a way to uniquely contribute to Viktor's combo. Riot accomplished this by making it so if Viktor's opponents have to stand still for him to land damage, so his team can contribute to his combo by providing cc. Wow, so unique great job Riot you made a mage that, get this, does better when their teammates cc the enemy. 10/10 Great and unique idea.

You'd pick him because you like shooting yourself in the foot.

Yea cause it was so fun getting almost os my viktor's e while he also cleard 3 casters with one spell. He has a harder time poking but an easier time clearing waves. I once lost 70% of my health as Ezreal because a Viktor who wasn't even fed e'd me. There is a reason why Viktor was once so contested in pro play.
