The Reasons Cass is a Broken POS

junglerboy16··30 votes·3,305 views

Just a disclaimer: I don't play Cass, and this is not another "Rito why u change Cass?" thread. This thread is going to discuss why Cass is utterly toxic game design in her current state.

Cassiopeia right now has a lot of issues. Aside from the fact that her old school fan base still largely doesn't like new Cass, she is poorly designed and has terrible patterns for gameplay when against her. few are the champions in this game that I simply refuse to play against, but Cass tops the list by a long shot. Here are the reasons for this:

  1. Her hyper scaling is totally forced. The way her passive works, playing against her is unintuitive because unlike a natural hyper scaling champion, she does not have a gradual curve, but several extremely jagged spikes that are jarring to the opponent and to the Cass player. Everytime her passive levels up, she gets a big spike in some stat. While you may say "oh, well that is no different than an item spike." I would counter that by arguing that since these spikes are tailored to her kit, they are in fact much more potent than a singular item being completed. Additionally, unless you are playing with somebody who doesn't know how recipes work, a player will always buy components first instead of a full blown item in one go. Her passive though is equivalent to getting a full item in a heartbeat, and since this can even happen mid fight, it is not intuitive for her opponent to gauge how strong she really is at any given time.

  2. Her main damage is now in a single, totally overloaded, point and click ability. While you may say the same for ADCs (AAs are abilities too), this just does not feel good to play against, especially since the AP item for slowing champions procs at full strength on it and is a much more efficient buy than its counterpart for ADCs. Her E just has WAY too much for any sane person not to tell it is a crap ability. It deals huge damage, it has a cool down reset, it heals, it restores mana, it amps her other abilities' damage by a whopping 40%! This single ability is beyond broken, and it shows immature design quality on the level of pre rework Sion or the blatant disregard for balance of pre rework Kayle. Honestly, how did nobody at Riot have the time to check in on Stashu during the rework and say "hey buddy, we don't overload spells like this anymore, it's bad for the game."?

  3. No matter how well you shut down a Cass early game (if you even can, because she is ironically still a lane bully), there is no real way to counter play her hyper scaling. When you play against Cass right now, you get this disgusting sense of inevitability, because of how her passive works. Eventually, she will get that 500th stack, and she will deal stupid damage. I could pick the strongest bully in the game and beat her to a pulp, but if I don't win by 35 minutes, I have to pretty much forfeit the match. Champions like Cass who hyper scale all have a bit of that sense of inevitability, but it is not nearly so overwhelming or powerful as her spike. If I shut down a Ryze hard early game, his late game scaling will let him catch up and eventually exceed my power, but I have a clear window when he is at least only as strong as me. With Nasus, I know that if I can bully him in lane and deny him farm, I can severely delay his hyper scaling. This ties back into point 1, where her final spike is SO potent and SO stinking strong that even if she is 0 and 4, if she even has half a build she becomes ridiculously strong and afterwards there is now no opportunity to counter her anymore. She can consistently jump from being totally useless in the match to solo carrying MID FIGHT. NO other hyper carry can turn on a dime like this, and it just feels nasty to play against.

  4. The way her kit is right now, she will always either completely stomp a match, or be totally useless until it is too late to make a comeback. As seen right when the rework was released, if her passive stacks too slowly, she is the bottom of the barrel trash tier, on the level of Urgot's footstool. As soon as her passive got buffed to stack in any reasonable speed, she became one of the strongest champions in the game. Her design is so binary that you will almost always either hard carry or be absolutely useless depending on when her passive usually maxes out. Right now, her passive stacks quickly and she is close to OP. I would bet anything that as soon as they try to nerf anything about her passive, she would go to crap again, even though her passive is what is so game breaking and needs changes.

Riot, Cass needs a rework again. I don't care if it is because she "doesn't feel like old Cass" or anything like that, but right now her kit literally defines the idea of no real counter play. It has prehistoric design in terms of overloading single spells and lacking a real identity of any sort. It feels forced and anti-fun to play against, and has a completely unintuitive power curve. Inb4 any people complain about requesting changes for one of the few mages strong enough to still hang out mid lane, please understand that I really do like Mages, but Cass is broken on so many levels that she does not have anything really in her defense for why she should not be reworked (again, but by someone other than Stashu).

Just a disclaimer: I don't play Cass

You should do so then and you can list 3 times as more negative effects regarding both the feel of her gameplay and power level.

Uuntil then fuck you and Stashu as well for this horrible abomination.

junglerboy1615 votes

Wait, what did I do? I'm calling Stashu out on this too, we're on the same side!

EDIT: By the way, this isn't me being Hypothetical about her problems, this is the perspective when playing against her, so it is irrelevant that I don't play Cass, my point was only that this is not a complaint about her identity or something, but about her anti-fun kit.

Envy Sin9 votes

Because playing Cass feels like shit too, (Almost) Nobody enjoys it, You have to sit around farming stacks all damn day.

junglerboy169 votes

And This^ is the reason I don't play her, otherwise I'd grab hold of the freelo. The reason I didn't make any points about how she feels to play as her is that I personally felt I only really had any authority to discuss how it feels to play against her, which I have done several times.

Envy Sin5 votes

Lmao, Look up any cass main. Try her yourself in a blind pick. It isn't fun. She isn't a posion mage anymore. (Which is why people loved her.) She isn't CASS.

She's just a AP Marksmen that is required to use mana for her "autos"

the lack of reading comprehension in this one is strong.

Try again.

She's one of the very few champions that people hate playing both as and against. I assume the player base that enjoys playing as her enjoys it because it's likely s free win. The only saving grace right now is her pick rate is so low

So many good points here, but I fear Riot are ignoring her now :/ Stashu's never been silent for so long.

I really do feel bad for people playing against Cass. It is an absolute nightmare to keep track of the 30 different things going on with her at any one time, she probably has the single biggest burden of knowledge of any champion in the game. When you combine that with the general horrendous design of current Twin Fang and the idea of "build 1000+ AP so you can make up for your gutted poison!" being a satisfying playstyle it's all just a mess :(

AquariusGine5 votes

I am a Cass main, but I totally agree. You have made a very important point with 3 and 4 !

Even if she loses badly, there is no way of stopping her from making a comeback. She doesn't get rewarded for playing well, and she doesn't get punished for doing badly.. in the end she has to be overtuned so she's not Urgot tier

"Just a disclaimer: I don't play Cass"

Actually playing the champs you can't seem to beat is a great way to learn their weaknesses and be able to fight them better. It's pretty obvious that you don't know much about her given that you seem to think that she's this inevitable hyper-carry that will always eventually destroy everything without you being able to do anything about.

  1. You do realize that getting T3 passive is the same power spike as finishing a deathcap? (Less if you also pick up a blasting wand or Rod) There are plenty of items that have a similar power spike as Cass' T3 passive. Seraph's and Muramana can trigger in the same way as well. This analysis doesn't make sense because there's plenty of things in the game already that are comparable to Cass' passive, and none of them have ever been complained about. And what's this about "not knowing how strong she is?" There's a buff on her that says not only how many stacks she has, but the exact stats she's getting.

  2. You made the comparison yourself. How is it in any way different then ADCs and auto attacks? Vayne has 1 ability that does damage, and everything else is from autos. Vayne's kit is more centralized around autos but no one complains about that. Both Syndra and Azir's kits are centralized around 1 ability but no one complains about them. The "Cass' kit being centralized around 1 thing is bad design" circlejerk has very little backing design-wise besides the anti-rework camp looking for reasons that Cass' new kit is "bad design."

  3. The total value of the benefits that Cass gets from her passive is less then 2k gold. (Deathcap is 840 gold to get the passive, 792 from CDR, and the health gain from E is about 10% of it's damage, so about 275 gold worth of spell vamp that only works on 1 ability. That totals out to 1907 gold.) Admittedly the free Deathcap might be more valuable since it stacks multiplicatively with Deathcap, but this is partially balanced out by the "Spell Vamp" only working on 1 ability and CDR being generally not that useful of a stat on Cass. I'm not saying Cass' passive isn't really strong, but most of her power, like all other mages, comes mainly from the items that she builds. Also Cass' late-game is a lot less guaranteed then Ryze (Who is much tankier and also can't miss his spells) or Karthus (Who still deals damage even after he dies and deals almost 1k damage with his ult to every member of the enemy team) Despite how much damage she deals, she's still capable of getting shut down since she doesn't have mobility so she's vulnerable to getting caught out and bursted down and can be very easily out-ranged if you have the champs for it. "But my team let her get a bunch of items and doesn't have the capability of bursting her down or out-ranging her." Well whose fault is that? If you don't pick any champs that are capable of shutting her down and let the game drag on, then you can't really blame anyone else for losing.

  4. I've had games where we won at 40 minutes and I had 10+ kills with less then 2 deaths and didn't have T3 passive. Cass is far from being "bottom of the barrel trash tier" before she finishes her passive. You complain about how "inevitable" her late-game is but she neither has the luxury of being able to build super tanky like Ryze nor have a bunch of guaranteed damage like Karthus. Her short range and lack of escapes doesn't magically disappear when she gets her T3 passive.

"and has not received any nerfs yet either. "

Ok, now you're being objectively wrong. She got nerfed last patch.

"Right now, her passive stacks quickly and she is OP."

Didn't know that 35-45 minutes into the game was "quick."

"but right now her kit literally defines the idea of no real counter play."

I'll admit that there are several really strong champs right now that if played well can't really be effectively countered. Cassiopeia is not one of those champs. Her lack of escapes make her extremely vulnerable to Jarvan, Vi, and Warwick, who can hold her in place while the rest of their team kills her. It also leaves her vulnerable to getting picked off. Also, her short effective range means she can be out-ranged by the likes of Xerath, Ziggs, and Lux. Sure, she can be extremely strong in absence of those things, but that makes her situational and have a niche, which is a good thing. As far as popular competitive picks go, she might be the most counterable as far as compositions go.

"lacking a real identity of any sort."

Yeah, there's so many mages out there that can dish out sustained damage that exceeds most AD carries. I can't tell if you are just trying to throw in as many "bad design" buzzwords as possible in hopes it will bring validity to your claims or you legitimately think that she has no real identity.

Honestly, your post reeks of "I keep getting destroyed by Cass in pubs because I have no clue what she does, but instead of learning what she does and how to counter her, I'm going to whine on the Official Forums about how she needs a rework, and I'll get support because everyone on OF just sides with anyone that has a negative opinion on Riot."

Also nice alt account you're posting on.

ShinySylvee1 votes

Given that you likely browse the Official Forums on a regular basis, I doubt that statement is actually true.

If you think I'm just picking numbers out of thin air, here's where I got the numbers: http://leagueoflegends.wikia.com/wiki/Gold_efficiency. The value for Deathcap I used was how much it costed past the 2 component items it has since the completed item gives the same amount of base AP as its components. At any rate, the point of me trying to calculate how much gold her passive was worth was to show that overall it was around the effectiveness of a completed item, not some end-all be-all godlike passive that magically turned her from being useless to being unstoppable by just finishing it.

Also, when trying to prove that someone is wrong, it usually helps to actually explain why you believe that they're incorrect, rather then resorting to hyperbolic statements that don't actually say anything and have no real value in terms of discussion.

Personally, I think her passive should be focused around the fact that she is a poison mage: Poison effects are refreshed when the enemy is hit by subsequent spells from Cass. So if she hits her q and then lands her e when her q poison has run out the q poison effect starts over. Something like this would make her DOTs be her main source of damage and make Cass play like a poison mage. Cass is a lane bully because she has poisons, poisons are supposed to slowly kill your opponent, please quit trying to change her identity Riot.

I don't know why they don't just listen to the community and monitor her power in games. Cass, thematically speaking, should be a poison Mage. Her two DoT spells are fine, spitting poison in an area and dealing poison damage, like a spitting cobra. Her ult is iconic, turning enemies to stone like Medusa. The main issues are her passive and her twin fangs ability. I really don't know what to do about her passive but it should be gutted and a completely new one should take its place. Twin fangs could be made into a skillshot, where she lunges forward, bites the opponent and lunges back, much like a snake biting its prey in real life

Shes a mage version of an adc with a horrendous early game, short range and no mobility.... what else do u want her to become? You listed nothing positive. If you feel you want her change, how do u propose Riot does it? Your post is all whine and nothing constructive.

I find cass to be a blast to play. She's fun and the fact that I can do bad early and if my team and I stall out long enough I might be able to get us to turn it around. If you want to beat any team with a cass just keep up the pressure.

not to mention her DPS goes from 100 to 0 so fast if u miss your poison reset. She is very unforgiving to play. Early game her mana costs are so insane that if u don't last hit perfectly with her E you will go OOM instantly and be forced under tower with no way to clear a wave quickly.

I would love for some of the damge of her E to go to w or Q but the way it's set up now. It's not hapenning so learn to adust

junglerboy166 votes

I don't have any problem with her being a "Mage version of an ADC" at all, and if that is what Riot wants from her, then by all means they should pursue that direction (although a lot of her fan base would prefer if they chose to make her more of a poison mage and took the "ADC mage" idea and put it on a different kit). I am only pointing out how Cass is binary and counterintuitive, while also being very toxic to play against (and not in a good, poison, kind of way). You don't seem to understand that I am not making a "Wah, Cass is too OP" thread, I would be upset with her current design even if she were back to absolute trash tier like when it first rolled out.

Your points about how her DPS can go "from 100 to 0" from missing her combo and "She is very unforgiving to play." only reinforce my point that regardless of her current strength, her kit is very poorly constructed at this point. I don't have any real suggestions on how to change it (as if my singular opinion matters to Riot) except that they need to A: scrap her passive because it is so binary and anti-fun to play against, B: extricate her kit power from Twin Fang by having its several excessive passives be distributed throughout her kit or simply removed, and C: identify her core identity and stick to it. Right now, she is half "Mage ADC", half "Poison mage", and has a random, completely out of place ultimate that has no connection to her lore or other abilities and feels like a total after thought. Cass needs to be made more forgiving to play as, and less toxic to play against (sorry, but if I shut you down hard early game, you shouldn't be able to make the kind of comeback she does), and there is no way to avoid that fact. You can enjoy your Cass freelo for now, but something significant has to change before she has even the slightest chance of being balanced and fun to play against.

Isn't she still a high ban in LCS?

junglerboy161 votes

My point isn't that she is strong or weak, but that she has a poorly designed kit either way.

straight4free1 votes

Here I am, still liking the new Cass.

Also, you grossly exaggerated her ability to make a comeback.

But whatever. Keep on with the tirade.

junglerboy162 votes

It isn't about liking or disliking the new Cass, it is about the fact that no matter how you cut it, her kit is extremely poorly designed. I am a big time Poppy fan, but she has a lot of problems and needs her upcoming rework just as bad as Cass. This isn't me being like "wah she is so OP!" or "she is super boring and awful!" this is me talking about why it is just not fun to play against one who uses the champ well.

ShinySylvee1 votes

"it is about the fact that no matter how you cut it, her kit is extremely poorly designed."

No matter how hard you state your opinion, it doesn't magically become fact. Design is not even something that can be considered factual, there is nothing concrete that could indicate what is right and wrong. Some people would say Dota 2 is a very well-designed game, and I would completely disagree with them.

"This isn't me being like "wah she is so OP!" or "she is super boring and awful!" this is me talking about why it is just not fun to play against one who uses the champ well."

Really, because what I got from your post was that you had no clue what she did and instead of figuring it out, you decided to just call her poorly designed and complain about her. I'm not saying that she's perfectly desgined (no champ is) but you didn't address any of the problems I saw with her and instead talked about a bunch of stuff that you would know isn't true if you actually played her. Also, what champ IS fun to play against when they're played well? I'll admit playing against a good Cass can be annoying, but I can think of several champs that are generally considered more annoying to play against.

junglerboy162 votes

I know exactly how she works, which is why I even bothered making this thread. I spent a LOT of time researching this and my conclusions are based on a combination of experience against her, watching professional games, studying her kit from the wiki, reading Cass guides and comparing her to everything about her that they said they did not want in any champion's kit. It is poorly designed at best, and anti-fun and broken at worst. You have yet to make any real counter argument other than "I like playing her" or " your argument is exaggerated". You have yet to show how her kit isn't counterintuitive, forced, overloaded, or lacking counter play, you have only shown that you enjoy it. I have no problem with you enjoying it, that is personal preference, but your opinion on how fun she is is irrelevant to whether or not she is broken.

ShinySylvee1 votes

Did you actually read my post? I don't think you did.

"I spent a LOT of time researching this"

Which is why you didn't know she got nerfed last balance patch.

"You have yet to make any real counter argument other than "I like playing her" or " your argument is exaggerated"."

First, I never once used my enjoyment of playing Cassiopeia as a part of my arguments. (I didn't even mention it offhandedly either, so I don't know where you're getting that. Again, did you actually read my post?) I do enjoy playing Cassiopeia, but I understand that the fact that I enjoy playing her doesn't mean she's well designed. Just like how the fact you don't like playing against her means she's poorly designed.

Second, I did call you out on exaggerating quite a bit, but I backed up my claims with evidence. The act of saying "you're exaggerating" doesn't immediately invalidate my claim. When you make statements that imply that a champ that doesn't really benefit that much from CDR (Compared to pretty much every other mage) getting 25% CDR and 10% AP is a more significant pickup then a completed item, I don't know what else I'm supposed to do other then call you out on it.

And lastly, I didn't only just say that your arguments are exaggerated. I compared the parts of her kit you called problematic to other elements in the game and how they're widely accepted as ok. Well over 90% of the damage Vayne deals is from her autos. Azir's entire kit is focused around his soldiers. I don't see how you could say those are acceptable but Cass' damage largely coming from Twin Fang isn't. It's not like Cass' Q and W feel like useless spells because of how powerful E is. You have to use them to be able to hit them with twin fang in the first place, and they have a deceptive amount of utility as well thanks to the movespeed from Q and the Vision/Area denial from W. And if you're going to say that Cass' ult sucks. Well I don't really know what to say.

"You have yet to show how her kit isn't counterintuitive, forced, overloaded, or lacking counter play, you have only shown that you enjoy it. I have no problem with you enjoying it, that is personal preference, but your opinion on how fun she is is irrelevant to whether or not she is broken."

You did nothing to refute my arguments other then say I "over-exaggerated" (and didn't show why me calling you on it made my arguments moot) and that I enjoyed the new Cass so she's fine. (A thing that I never actually did) On the contrary, from my standpoint, you just did the exact thing you claimed that I did.

junglerboy162 votes

Sorry, I think I confused you with somebody else when I was saying the only arguments you made were about enjoying her. I sincerely apologize for the confusion.

I want to clarify that this thread is not simply for the purpose of saying Cass is OP. Broken=/=OP. Her kit is poorly designed for reasons other than being unfun to play against, like what you mentioned, she is trying to take the role of a mage ADC, but falls short of actually succeeding in that capacity compared to an actual ADC. Her passive is quite strong compared to some others, because even though the final stage is only a 30% AP increase, like Rabbadon's, since it stacks with that it is actually more along the lines of a 39% increase. I would have much less of a problem with Cass if her scaling were smoother (like most other hyper scalers like Nasus or Ryze), but the choppiness of her passive makes the transition too black and white. I was watching an EU match a couple days ago, I think it must have been between Elements and SK gaming, and it was nearing late game. I believe Elements had a pretty big lead at that point, and both teams had just lost some members at Baron in a fight. Shortly after, one of the casters noted "and here I just saw Jesiz get his 500th stack, so lets see how the next fight goes." Immediately, SK went from losing and down in gold and all objectives to suddenly having a Cass two-shotting everyone on Element's team, leading to a face roll win within 4 minutes of that 500th stack. While you can say that they should have tried to end before then or finished out the game while Cass was still weak, but saying you simply have to finish a game before a 100% guaranteed time limit (Cass passive will always max out by a minimum of 50 minutes, and usually much, much sooner if she poisons people) is not counter play. Nasus can be denied farm, Ryze can be denied farm, Veigar can be denied farm, but a Cass will always stack up.

P.S. I did in fact know she got nerfed, and I will edit my original post accordingly (I spent a while compiling it, so I simply forgot to edit that portion).

ShinySylvee1 votes

"but falls short of actually succeeding in that capacity compared to an actual ADC."

In what way does she fall short? I don't really know how to refute this because I don't know in what way you think she is lacking. Her DPS is certainly high enough if that's the reason why, even without T3 passive.

"(Anecdote from LCS)"

I believe the game you are referring to is UOL vs CW, since it fits the description of "The commentator calls out she hits T3 passive and then their team wins." (SK vs Alliance didn't have a Cassiopeia) And that game isn't really even a good example. First, Cassiopeia was never really behind. She had the most CS in the game by far, and was able to mostly keep up in items. Second, it was mainly Draven, not Cass, carrying the fights. She was doing work as well, but it was mainly Draven dealing most the damage. Third, by the time that Cass got her T3 passive, the gold lead was largely diminished. CW was within 1k gold when Cass got T3 passive. And lastly, it wasn't even necessary since UOL just got caught out repeatedly until they finally lost the game. The only kills that Cass got past T3 passive that she actually had to work for were when she killed Irelia and Corki, and she did that while the nexus was going down so they probably didn't matter anyway.

You keep acting like her getting her T3 passive is this inhumanely large power spike, but I wouldn't say it's larger then Vayne finishing BotRK, Yasuo finishing Stattik Shiv, any TF user finishing TF, junglers finishing their Warrior enchantment, or even Cassiopeia finishing Rylai's. If you want a more direct comparison I would say that finishing muramana is a comparable spike as well. Again, I'm not saying it isn't good or that her passive isn't one of the better passives in the game, but it's nowhere near the massive power spike you're making it out to be. Her sustained damage is insane before she gets it, and she's still an unsafe, escape-less short-ranged mage after she gets it. It just makes her even stronger in situations where she was already good while leaving her weaknesses intact. Even though her late-game damage is obscene, she's just as vulnerable to getting locked up and bursted down as she was before she got it. Also, it only multiplies your existing AP by 30%. If you're really doing that good of a job shutting her down, she's still not going to have that much AP since she didn't have much to begin with. If you give anyone enough time they'll eventually get full build, but you don't say that Vayne, Jax, Tristana, Dr Mundo, Rammus, or Twitch lack counterplay because if given enough time they'll eventually get 6-slotted.

Kazukes1 votes

When did cass become broken? I'm serious she's like a gimped adc that has to land a skillshot to sustain what adcs can do simply by right clicking someone. She's also got bad range in my opinion. Come time to group if you ever land a q or w on someone relevant you can't go over to e them without getting jumped on by whoever their front line is. Also in a team fight say a non poisoned enemy body blocks a poisoned enemy its like gg you now do 0 damage and by the time that q or w is back up you'll have lost 1-2 teammates since it was practically a 4v5. Also she's so linear now. Remember when sometimes it was better to just poke with q because it was too risky to e whoever you were fighting (syndra). Now she can do nothing but max e 1st everytime. What do you do against that xerath or other enemy champion who is poking and clearing the wave from the front of their turret while you are dodging poke left and right for a chance to poison them and by the time you do poison them and get there they are snug under their turret after throwing their abilites at you either winning the trade or simply getting free harass.

junglerboy161 votes

I think you misunderstood. Cass being broken does not have any correlation to whether she is OP, it means that her kit is badly designed, which can be manifested in being sub par and overly unforgiving like you have pointed out. Cass is broken because she is too extreme. I've seen several Cass games in LCS so far where she completely crushed EVERYONE, but I have also seen just as many where the casters are like "oh, I forgot so and so was even on Cass this game, I haven't seen them do anything useful." That is where the brokenness is. That, and she feels awful to play against, even if you beat her.
