Should you play all 5 roles?

DarkHeadgear··19 votes·14,920 views

Now that the improved queuing has been introduced where you are only required to main two roles, is there a point to playing all 5 roles besides filling?

For example, learning enemy champion kits and cooldowns, or learning other mechanic that are more important like wave control for a top laner to be used as an adc for bot lane.

Do you think it is useful to main more than 2 roles?

If you play all 5 roles you can learn how to play against all types of champs

Not necessarily.

It may not necessarily make you invincible, but it will allow for a fundamental understanding of counterplay, which you must admit is a very beneficial thing to have.

It was very useful for figuring out how kits like Leblanc and Ekko worked. Without playing them or a lot of experience, it seemed like they could warp around the map all willy-nilly.

President Swa1n3 votes

If Leblanc ever becomes free, I must try her out, if only for counterplay research.

Hinagiku334 votes

I strongly recommend it.

I can't tell you how many times I've tried out a champ because they kicked my ass, only to find they were basically useless in my hands because there were lots of restrictions on the tricks I saw them pull.

President Swa1n1 votes

I used to (typically) think Fizz was broken and played him on free week and saw how insanely high his E CD was. IMHO, most, if not all champions need at least some skill to be played effectively and most if not all can be counter played as well.

You should play enough to have a functional understanding of the other roles, but there is no need anymore to main more than two.

[DISCLAIMER: Silver player...not source of authority on all things learning to be good. I'm still learning to learn :D]

I used to play all five pretty regularly. I loved the exploration and constant learning.

That said, since I've started focusing more, it's been a lot easier to notice bad habits, or spot good ones in opponents.

I agree with a lot of the fine folks in here that are saying it's good to play a bit of each, but I've found my happy place focusing on one main, one secondary and filling the others when circumstances demand. Or you could just play Lulu...she kind of works in all five if you get really creative.

Or teemo becoz he can literally be played in all five, who cares if it's not viable!?

TequilaZombie3 votes

Swap Teemo for Kennen and you have a viable Tank/Support/Adc/Jungler/APC.

You could have a team with nothing but Kennens and you'd still have all the roles filled.

Urgot also can work in all 5. Kayle as well potentially. FLEX PICKS BOYS

Tank Kennen Top can focus on a safe initiation for his team to follow.

Support Kennen Bot can focus on stunning threat to his carries.

ADC Kennen Bot makes great use of his W bonus damage, as well as having great self peel to help with assassins (I'd argue he's the safest ADC in the game).

Jungle Kennen can choose any role his team needs (initiator/peeler/APC/ADC)

APC Kennen is the way Kennen was created to be used, bringing tons of AoE damage and utility.

Plz no.

Not because of viability, but because Teemo...

I mean she is traditionally played in support but I take her in the Jungle and usually build item 3078 for tons of damage.

You took Phreak way too seriously didn't you?

Iwinatlife423 votes

Ah the old Champion spotlights where Phreak jungled everyone and always built item 3078

Lulu "ADC" or better "AttackSpeedCarry": item 3006 item 3091 item 3085 item 3115 item 3153 item 3026 (probably not in the right order) Tried it once out in aram, don´t know why anymore, but it was good. In SR it was not really good, but I think it would work fine for some pros.

You don't have to know how to play all 5 roles, but mastering one and knowing how to play the other without costing too much for one's team is usually the best way through.

Trying to play and improve on 5 roles at a time will not really get you anywhere if you are looking to climb, as you have too many things to learn at once. Shrink the focus to one or two cuts a lot of slack and time for you to improve on one thing. Of course one should know how all 5 roles work to have a better understanding of power curves/team comp/etc, but knowing how to play them is completely optional.

Then unless you main support which gets you that role 99% of the time, sticking to just two is good enough.

RocketRelm2 votes

Generally I'd say that you should focus on 2 roles, and be able to play the last three at a level at least 1 league below your present league. This is simply for understanding and helping you learn the game as a whole. IE, if you can be a Plat Mid/Jungle, you shouldn't be worse than a Gold in ADC/Support/Top.

The concept doesn't translate as well to lower leagues, if you're Silver/Bronze, then totally tunnel vision until you're at least Gold Tier, 100%. At that point you're still largely needing to learn your 'main', much less anything else.

EndlessSorcerer6 votes

I wouldn't recommend playing more than two roles consistently, but I'd recommend you know how they play.

Being able to predict the actions and priorities of your allies and enemies is an invaluable skill.

This is especially useful as a jungler since you can predict when and where the enemy will ward, which match-ups will need assistance or can be left alone, which enemies will be vulnerable to ganks, etc.

i just go with mid or feed

CerealBoxOfDoom5 votes

you should know how to play all 5 roles

you should main one or two roles

Alorrin013 votes

If you're going to "main" more than two, please do it outside of ranked. I enjoy nothing more than pulling up my lane opponent in ranked to find he's got 200 ranked games played with no more than 5 on any given champ. Even if I'm countered, it's a free win.

THE RlVER KlNG3 votes

I'd say you should have at least 1-2 champions that you can play objectively well in each role. I don't care if you exclusively play only AP assassins or Riven or Ezreal or whatever, you should be able to function in the other four roles too. I hate when people bitch that they didn't get top or mid or whatever and act like a jerk support or jungle all game, or feed their ass off as an ADC they've never played.

DREADN0UGHT3 votes

In my opinion, to climb elo i dynQ, one should:

  1. Understand all 5 roles
  2. understand basic mechanics and abilities for as many champs as possible
  3. stick to maining 1 role with a comfort 2nd role
Marshbouy2 votes

Learning all the roles is a great idea. It helps you understand their palystyle and their needs to get far in a game. You don't need to play each role 20% of the time, you just need to play a few games of each to be able to understand them at a basic level.

oSEXYPLATYPUSo2 votes

play all champs all roles. play champs in all roles. why not its a game, have fun enjoy it.

Blue Moon Wolf2 votes

Learning all 5 roles is pretty important. If you know all 5 roles, then you will understand the issues each role faces and be a lot more understanding when on a team. That said, by no means do you need to master each role. I hardly understand how to jungle correctly and ADC feels like there is too much pressure to kill every minion and get fed. But I've played them and know what they have to deal with. So I can understand why the Jungler hasn't ganked for me or why the ADC hasn't gotten a single kill 10 minutes into the match. At least trying each role is good to help you know what to expect when others play the role and even help you predict the enemy better.

Noblewind2 votes

You should learn all roles to know how they play, it will make you better player. But after you've done trials with a lot of champs and roles and find one or two that you like, it's important to stick to them (if climbing is your goal). Being good at a lot of things but not amazing at any one will make you a 'slower' player in general, in terms of split-second mechanics. In the long term if you're regularly rotating champs you only have 20ish games on, you're at a disadvantage and may find your games have a larger 'luck' aspect than say, a one-trick's.

I feel like you should know how all 5 roles work and play them all from time to time, but pick a couple to really "main".

Play all 5 rolls, main one, keep a strong backup.

Quepha1 votes

When you want to improve, you should focus on normalizing as many variables as possible. There are too many variables in League of Legends for you to just get better when everything is completely different every game.

Even if you want to get good at all 5 roles, then you should rotate between what you're focusing on. One week of adc, then one week of top, then one week of mid, etc. And when you do each of those roles you should only be focusing on playing a single champion in that role, maybe two if there's a decent chance of your main being banned.

XinZhao2WinNhao1 votes

I only play 1 role - mid.

Xonra1 votes

Would think playing 5 would give you a shallow champ pool compares to playing 3 roles which could better overlap champions (like mid and support I play Morg, or Jungle/support Naut and so on)

SwiftKitten881 votes

5 roles is not needed, i don't like your poll options though. i play 3 mains roles.. i can play a 4th, but i don't adc

Sire Hippington1 votes

You should play all 5 on a somewhat decent level, so you know how they work and then focus on 2 roles. So in terms of actually maining, 2are enough, but youe should play all roles. If you understand how to play a role, it helps alot at playing together with that role aswell as playing against it, same for champs, you don't need to main them all, but you should try to play every champ a **bit **as it helps alot at playing against them aswell as plying in a team with them. For example if you main top, playing jungle gives you a good idea on when to expect ganks, how to prepare for ganks from your jungler and where to place wards vs more tricky gankpaths.

Happy Jack1 votes

If you care about fun, play them all.

If you care about winning, master 2 roles.

StubbornGoat1 votes

If your goal is to climb the ladder it isn't realistic to play all 5 roles unless you're an exceptional player. In my experience this game is just to nutty for me to go anywhere near bot lane. You dont have enough of a damage output as a support to reliably carry the game and playing a squishy adc is too stressful. Theres too much flying around and too little organization.

Sylvant1 votes

Cant vote for that poll because all the 3 options are valid and not mutually exclusive. Yes, knowing all the 5 roles benefits you and is a requirement to be a good player, know the mechanics for each lane and how to interact with it, when you play another role. Yes, its better to main two roles, simply because you cant be good at everything and you can be really good when you focus on one thing and there is the trivial side that you need to play atleast two roles to fit the matchmaking system. You can end up barely playing the second role, duo to match making mechanics and again, when you focus at one thing, you can be really really good.

WitchQueen Annie1 votes

I've found that its easiest to concentrate on just 2 roles. I generally go for Mid or ADC because I simply don't trust anyone else to be the main damage dealer in team fights.

I stay away from Top because its hard to team fight from top lane (especially after TP nerfs) and I've also found that its too Counterpick dependent. Your impact on the game seems limited (if you're team is winning you'll do well enough to win, if not, then you can't do much). You're not likely to be there when the game is decided.

Support deals too little damage but I've had some success playing full damage Annie support.

Not a big fan go JG; counter-JG really puts me on tilt and I have no idea how the other JG constantly has a sense of where I am. Also, I can never seem to persuade my team mates not to over push.

Glaedr1 votes

If you actually care about improving as a player rather than just being a solo queue hero that stomps people with no coordination, then yeah, of course learning all roles to a decent level helps because at the end of the day they all tie together. Even if you have zero intention of actually playing those extra roles you learned, you can still help your team out and micromanage them when necessary.

DeathBurst1 votes

As others have already said, I think it's important to try a bit and know the basics of every role, but to focus on one main role to improve and climb.

ERQR21 votes

You don't need to learn all five roles. If you want to be somewhat viable in every role, which is possible in a way that is time consuming, and will slow down your climb for quite some time. I recommend you pick one meta pick champ for each role, then two pocket picks for each role that you enjoy playing as back up, in case that one meta pick champ is banned or taken away. Reguardless, as most people here said, is not highly needed that you play all five roles. The more you play the game, the more you come to understand about champions you don't play without even playing them. Yes, you won't be able to understand them in extreme details like the people who actually main those certain roles you don't main or champs for that specific role but, that bit of knowledge that you have in your pocket will allow you to be of some kind of use for your team as long as you play around that bit of knowledge that you have where the window for mistakes is smallest.
