Truth about Sightstone

Seems like this is a hot topic issue right now. As a Support Main, I'm going to give my 2 cents on this. Let's get back to basics and actually discuss why Sightstone is even an item.

Sightstone exists solely to provide vision. It's as simple as that. It's like a better trinket. So why buy it?

Exactly for that reason. Vision control. The more vision control you get, the easier your games are going to be. It's the age old saying "wards win games". As Support, you should be placing A LOT of emphasis on getting and denying vision. It's simply a part of the role, like farming is for other roles. Not having Sightstone makes that a lot harder than it needs to be. It's like a self handicap.

Wards are going to be more beneficial for you and your own team in the long run, as compared to extra damage/stats.

Should other roles be warding too? Yes, of course. It's simply in their best interests and the best interests of the team as well. But Support SHOULD be warding the most because they SHOULD have the most wards accessible to them.

The ONLY feasible reason to not build it is if both the Jungler and someone else have already built it (at least 2), but even then it's a good buy for superior vision.

(Flaming or reporting someone for not building one is completely unjustified, though)

Thoughts?

I'd like to build item 2045 item 3083 item 1401 item 3116 item 3026 item 3512 on Sejuani and see people's reactions.

-Support/Jungle main.

Soraka Sejuani

Also, does Teemo with CD really need wards? I decided to do a game and had 45% CDR. I had SS and all those darn shrooms warding basically half the map. I used his shrooms for vision. His blind for harass and zoning. Used his W for assisting. His E was basically useless though except for peeling. (Support Teemo.) I'm not saying it is viable since he is mana hungry af but...

Against a Draven, Draven will cry because he will be misses most of his axes.

This is a hot topic? ... wha? What's made it a hot topic other than people saying it should regenerate wards over time and/or on kills and assists?

Also only really support should be buying Sightstone. Other roles need that slot for items that effect them more.

Also, supports, don't forget the items it CAN build into:

  • item 2301 Eye of the Watchers for AP champs that don't feel like getting Frost Queen's. I feel like this is almost nobody, though.

  • item 2303 Eye of the Equinox for tanks. Though sometimes you can switch this up with with Face of the Mountain for the shield pop which is sorta useful on up-close melee sports that can get up there to take advantage fo the active (Braum, Leona, Alistar, etc.).

  • item 2045 Ruby Sightstone. The one you choose when you don't upgrade to a "Eye of ____" item. Extra health and it reduces your items' actives which usually aren't reduced by CDR. Pretty neat.

  • Also item 2302 Eye of the Oasis does things. Not sure what. Maybe a 'raka benefits from its stats.

As said before, all of these items mean you'd be missing out on something else for the tactical advantage of a warding item.

item 2301 means you lose out on item 3092 Frost Queen's Claim and the ghost's slow effect and there's about 25 AP difference between its AP and Frost Queen's AP. You get less mana regen from Frost Queen's, though. item 2303 means you lose out on item 3401 Face of the Mountain and it's exploding shield and 10% CDR. You get 50 less health from Face of the Mountain, though. item 2302 means you lose out on item 3069 Talisman of Ascension and wtf it do its movespeed boost as well as 45 armor. You get less mana regen from Talisman, though, and the Eye item here gives 200 Health.

One thing I HAVEN'T done research on is gold cost, but from my experience, the Eye item is always cheaper.

Personally, I never build Watchers given the AP champs I support on. I never build FotM though the research I've put into this single post again has be rethinking that because FotM has CDR.

And personally, I just never build yellow support items.

100% agree, sightstone is a core item on every team.

With that said, let's take a look at season 4, a lot of people wasn't around back then, but Smite didn't had the juicy upgrades it has now, back then going jungle without smite was theoretically possible, weaker, but a LOT more possible than it is right now. Riot realized the effects of a jungler with and without smite and decided they would thread both the summoner spell and the jungler item in order to make it almost mandatory and to keep those pesky laners out of the jungle (which didn't work).

They made it mandatory because of the benefits for the team and the Jungler.

Now we have Sightstone, an item that brings a lot of benefits to the team but some pesky mages are overlooking it for a less optimal way of play, sending teamwork out of the window and increasing the chances of loosing for their team. What should Riot do?

In my opinion, sighstone should become a Summoner spell that allows you to buy a support item, in fact they should make Exhaust get different interactions with items, say for example:

  • item 3303 line changes exhaust into spooky ghosts and the item stays with the warding active
  • item 3401 line changes exhaust into the shield thing plus dmg reduction, like 5 or 10% while the item stays with the warding active
  • item 3301 line... this one should get reworked... no clue how though

Make sightstone mandatory somehow either way, because it IS necessary and while you're at it, link role to summoner spell, like junglers must have smite locked in no matter what and supports should have sightstone/exhaust.
