Please, learn at least one champion in each role. Don't be like me.

Agreed. Really knowing one champion per role is the bear minimum, and being proficient at 3 is recommended.

minimum.
I play one champion in every role.
It's not really necessary to.
If you are going to play ranked, it kinda is. Normals you can let it slide because you can either just play off-meta (if you can win) or manage to still get your role. But for a strong competitive environment, it's pretty necessary that you know at least 1 thing for each role

I'm Plat and don't know how to play anything but Garen, and I don't even have him as my most played in rank each season.
Not next season. Know two roles and you're set.

yeah execpt most high elo players are 1 trick ponys
yeah execpt most high elo players are 1 trick ponys
That's not really true. I can't think of any high elo players who don't have the ability to play each role to at least a basic degree - this even goes for pros who play exclusively one role for professional purposes.
I know at least 5 for every role. :^)

Heim supp is great. Just set up turrets back behind where minion line is so you have a place to run to, then just stun people.

Which is why you will never be good. Players like you make trash teammates. If your last pick and no one else picked support then you should try to learn at least one. You'd be surprised how fun Leona support or even brand support is
Oh yeah...I should add her to my list of supports.
What if I just play one champion for all roles?

Then you dodge if your champion gets banned/stolen.
I had to fill so much that i became okayish at every role and learned most champs i never played. Pretty good experience.
I play Gnar, shen, and kennen top
Ekko, Noct, Zac, Rek Sai, and learning kindred jg
Ziggs and Ahri mid
Jinx, Trist, sometimes Ez for fun
Am support main so i play most of the support out there
I have, at some point, spammed each role in normals so i'm pretty comfortable.

That's why I like the Mastery system (though people use that as a source for bitching now). It incentivizes me to try out and get good with a variety of champions.
My main problem, though, is not all roles are being leveled up equally. No one wants to support, so I've been playing almost nothing but support and trying my best to use champions that have some form of utility or artillery, but eventually I'll be left with champions meant for other lanes, namely assassins and ADCs. To compare, these are the champions I have Mastery 5 with so far:
Fighters: Darius
Tanks: Nautilus
Mages: Brand, Vel'Koz
Supports: Braum, Lulu, Tahm Kench, Morgana
Marksmen: Miss Fortune, Tristana
Assassins: None
You can already see a pattern forming here, not to mention that I mastered Brand and Vel'Koz almost exclusively through supporting, same with Nautilus. That means out of the ten champions I've mastered so far, only three were outside of the support role. That's because everyone wants to go Yasuo mid, and if they lose that bid they'll go for the next best thing. Eventually I'll have nothing left but assassins, and I hate the idea of homogenizing the team by picking the same role as everyone else.
I do know, though, that I have at least five champions in every role that I'm confident with, because almost right from the start I tried to not get caught in a hole so many people (read: Yasuo mid exclusives) do:

except for
,
being support and
being adc...
Vel'koz has extreme range and vectoring on his side, and both he and Brand don't need to build much to do some serious damage, since Vel does true damage when he makes a full stack and Brand strips a guaranteed 8% of the enemy's max HP (before magic resist) if he tags them once with a spell, before the spell's damage. I use them as artillery.
With Lulu I build cooldown reduction, magic damage and non-crit attack speed. With her passive, she actually has a higher base damage than any ADC, and her general kit is a heap of crowd control and buffs. It's scary.

but what makes you think they can actually support? what in their kit has support on it? do they speed up allies? do they shield? do they heal? do they heal status effects?
you end up with an apc thats behind in gold and no support in your team, those picks are usually a "i didnt get mid so im using my mid champ on bot"
This is the problem with the current climate of the game. There have been very painfully long streaks where I will get teamed up with people who want to go Yasuo, Zed, Vayne and Jax and that's it. For dozens of games at a time. FOR MONTHS. So with four AD melee assassins, we are lacking so many damn things, and the support is expected to cover each and every one of them. That includes ranged damage, magic damage, pushing lanes, defending lanes, tanking, applying buffs and crowd control, stealing dragon and baron, smashing towers, warding, stealing the enemy's jungle buffs, applying Grevious Wounds, peeling, and the list goes on. If everyone else is an assassin, the support can't do all of that (nor should you expect them to do all of that), and in the same climate, I've found too often that the ADC or whoever will squander those buffs and crowd control like you would not believe.
Case in point, there are too many times where I'll hold down one or more enemies while my allies hump the wall just outside of the fight for a full minute or maybe even longer, and then only after I die do they go in, only do die as well, and then complain about how we don't have any tanks and everyone is intentionally feeding, and they didn't get peeled. It's beyond annoying. It is three years past annoying.
So yeah, this is the direct consequence of overspecializing and INSISTING on overspecializing, unless you want Riot to release a champion that literally does it all.

2 wrongs dont make a right, if mid id AD, you can get a top or jg AP
and the support is expected to cover each and every one of them
no they are not, supports are supposed to support, be it laying wards, healing, (ie provide utility, not damage), problem is some players feel like they are not doing anything unless they are dealing damage, if thats the case, just avoid being a sup.
That includes ranged damage, magic damage, pushing lanes, defending lanes, tanking, applying buffs and crowd control, stealing dragon and baron, smashing towers, warding, stealing the enemy's jungle buffs, applying Grevious Wounds.
rofl no, except applying buffs and crowd control, thats not at all the job of a support.
If everyone else is an assassin
then, again, thats a problem of the team's composition.
Case in point, there are too many times where I'll hold down one or more enemies while my allies hump the wall just outside of the fight for a full minute or maybe even longer, and then only after I die do they go in
then you are not playing as a support, supports should never be alone, they are not meant to 1vX
but what makes you think they can actually support? what in their kit has support on it? do they speed up allies? do they shield? do they heal? do they heal status effects?

They're just as valid supports as Annie and Zyra, who have both been competitive picks in the past. A support doesn't need to have ally buffs to be viable - if they have high base damages and/or strong CC, that can justify a pick. Vel'Koz packs decent CC and abilities that melt people with little damage. Similar for Brand, who is definitely lacking in CC after a point but has a ludicrous laning phase.
Of course they are "mid champs low on gold" at the end of the day, but that hasn't stopped other champions of that ilk being strong before.
Should have at least 3 because of bans and the opponent picking your champ (they can't pick away intentionally like pros because they don't know who you are, but can still happen at random, especially if it's a popular champ). If they also have different matchups and team comp advantages, that's even better. (For roles that can be AD or AP, have at least one of each, or better yet multiple of each for the same reasons.)
I just dodge if i get jungle, it's the only role I'm not even be passable at. Every season it's the same thing; I start to understand the jungle and find a champ that works for me.... then it changes.
so i gave up. [slayer-jinx-unamused] I'll fill anything else if I have to but fuck jungle

I know the feel bro.
I really wish riot would leave jungle alone.
Why don't they make minions harder to kill and add a minion playing item. Plus we should get health back from killing melee minions, mana from caster minions and when you kill a super minion it should place vision from river.
I'm trying to have at least three for each role.

ADC because I just got him.

More junglers? NONSENSE, THEY ARE PRIVILEGED TO DIE AT YOUR FEET!
: Indeed.
I can play like every champion in the game since i dont necessarily main one tbh. With the exception of AD Assassins. Holy fuck i can't play those.
Actually i would prefer learn 3 every role.. that way you are able to do something i they ban your champs
