Matchmaking - Did something change?

Has something changed with matchmaking recently? I haven't been playing very frequently recently, but I've been noticing far more diamond players against me than usual. Used to be I might see one or two a season, not three or four in a two month span.

I'm all for a good challenge from time to time, but I'd rather have close matches that don't have high rank players "just messing around" while my friends and I don't feel like we can do anything. There's just too large of a skill/knowledge gap to make those games fun.

For reference I'm a high silver/low gold level player who primarily plays normals.

Depending on your elo you can play against a number of tiers of players. You might have someone in your group (you?) who has really high mmr, while at the same time the enemy team might have people with really low mmr so the ranks don't end up matching. In normals matchmaking is much more forgiving and will pit players with the same elo together almost regardless of the ranks entirely.
