As California Player with the Chicago Server....

Thanks, Riot. My ping went up about 10, but it is still just as playable as before. But thanks for bringing the game to a more equal playing field for all the players. Because there isn't really any fun about an unfair advantage.

How did you only go up by 10? I live in California too, and I went up by 36.

I think the drought might be getting to him... jk

I also went up by 30, but it feels like its rising everyday. Today I played a game with 300ms. Does Riot's ping correlate with the weather?

Zeurth20 votes

If you live in California and your ping only went up by 10.. You're lying probably.

Zenthon Prime5 votes

Yep, calling BS on this. Unless your ping was at 60 or 70 it physically doesn't make sense.

Keyoshi4 votes

100% lying, i was sitting at 28 ping before the move, Now i sit at 65-70. I mean i was spoiled by riot for so long that i just hate seeing such a high number but it's not really that noticeable. I really hate that my ping is yellow instead of being green.

Not lying, m'afraid. I'm not by any means an expert on on network connections, but you could run a ping test to the server location as well as a trace route to see if you are making any unnecessary hops and get in contact with Riot, your ISP etc to see how to get it optimized. Best of luck, friend!

Google Fiber perhaps. Since its all Fiber Optic, he'd technically not see much of an increase, 10 would be about it, and just so you're aware, Google Fiber is available in parts of California, and if you have it, your ping would be about 30 - 40 from coast to Chicago.

the Anarchit3cht1 votes

My ping was generally 60-80 depending on network congestion and now its typically 70-90. While I will admit that before it was more towards the 60 and now its more towards the 90 the fact of the matter is: there is no significant difference in my ability to play the game.

There's no way, The servers were in portland. My friend come cali had maybe around 40 ping. I live 2 hours away from portland and i sat at 28 ping. I went up 40 ping, the fact that you say you went up 10 ping is bullshit. Take a screen shot and show us your ping. because i dont believe you one bit.

7ha7guy7771 votes

My ping was also 60-80. It's a fairly stable 84 now

As I said, I can take a screen shot of my current ping and will show you the screenshot when I play next, but that in no way will reflect my ping before the server swap(which was virtually the same 60-80 compared to 70-90) so while I can prove the latter, there is no way for me to prove the former. AS I said also(although not in my main post) I do get lag spikes and experience disconnects, but I largely believe that will be fixed.

In between 100-150 at all times now with random intense ping spikes. All this did was reverse the roles, and of course made things unbearable for Alaska and Hawaii. Do east coast players deserve to suffer with higher ping? Of course not, but giving west coast players the same problem that east coast players had isn't fixing the problem.

Le Dauphin6 votes

You should fill out this form http://na.leagueoflegends.com/tools/network-logs to help them resolve the problems.

The goal wasn't to switch which coast had good ping and which coast had bad ping. The goal was to let everyone (or at least, the continental US) have decent ping. Chicago is in the middle-ish of the US, and it doesn't make sense for California to Chicago to be slower than Florida to Portland was. If that's what you observe, it's routing issues and inefficiencies that can be resolved, possibly with your help by filling out the form.

I'm amused at how many people from West Coast complain a ton about a ping of roughly 80ish (This is the average with a decent service provider).

East coast had to endure (For the MAJOR part of it) a steady ping of 100-130 for 7 years. SEVEN. YEARS. Back when we said "This is actually a major problem riot" what did most West Coasters say? "Lol, Git gud" Well, I'm truly sorry your ping went up by an average of 50, while mine dropped by NINETY. Maybe now we'll be closer to being equal, instead of East Coasters sitting at 115 while West Coasters (Less than 30% of the entire game population on the NA server) sat at near 30. There's a reason why Riot hid the ping back in S3-S4. They understood that it actually mattered and didn't want people to see this : "Hey, this guy I'm laning against has 8 ping and just dodges all my skillshots while I don't even see half of his, what the heck".

she juke5 votes

The only time I ever see "west coast players" complain about the ping increase is when east coast players, completely truthfully, I'm sure, "quote" them.

Galewings7 votes

"Thanks for bringing the game a more equal playing field for all the players"

Meanwhile Japan, Hawaii and Alaska. Not to mention the multiple people who live close to Chicago but have actually seen their ping increase.

chipi9910 votes

Japan and Hawaii aren't on North America but they should totally get a server.

Blue Moon Wolf2 votes

What server is Hawaii on? Also, they should give them a server and do a skin in spirit of the new server like how riot made the south american server and released that Bride Morgana skin

LaceUp2326 votes

Yeah, because Japan is TOTALLY North America.

LegitBacon666 votes

i went from 60 ping to 17 pretty dank if you ask me

CookieKitKat5 votes

I normally had 80 and then for about a month it was like 60 and then after the move its back at 80. Completely fine by me lol makes no difference and its completely playable on. :)

DELI MEATS5 votes

110 down to 50 on east coast. Amazeballs.

RIP Alaska Players

Linthe4 votes

Yea. I was really worried for a while. For 2 days I had like 400 ping.. Could not even create a Custom Game because the server request would time out. But yesterday all was well.

Spinning Axes4 votes

I also live in California, went from 37 ping to 68, which is still okay.

ZenBudS4 votes

I disagree with this post. i live in Washington state and my ping went from 69 to 110. Game is noticeably slower and compensating for the lag makes this game unenjoyable and makes some champions unplayable.

Yormaughm2 votes

110 is unplayable, but it's what a statistical majority of players were dealing with for 6 years.

Either 110 isn't unplayable or League has been an unplayable game this whole time, who knew?

Not saying it couldn't be better, it could, and hopefully will be, but calling 110 unplayable is kinda delusional. Sorry.

Incriminatory4 votes

I live in California. I used to get between 15- and 40 ping. Now with the servers in chicago i have not seen my ping go below 100 even once. And it is routinely 130+ with spikes up to 300. So frustrating. I hope they fix this otherwise this server change is just really frustrating.

KayleeT4 votes

What needs to be done is having two different servers for each coast

XShattered FateX4 votes

They really should. Otherwise, nobody is going to be happy. I mean, sure, moving it to Chicago made it more equal for everyone but how? They made it so that most people have the same mediocre ping range around 70 or 80+ which while it's an improvement for me, and I like it, It would absolutely suck to be going from a really low ping to that. Come on, Riot, get it together already

Troll for Trump3 votes

100-150, with random ping spikes

SKT T1 Peter3 votes

39 green, to 70+ yellow. team fights are so bad....gg rip this game lol

XShattered FateX1 votes

70 yellow?

Considering I spent the longest time with 100+ mostly green, I think this is highly unlikely. Because of the server move, 60-70 is the general range of my ping, and it works wonderful

LordGeovanni1 votes

i used to think that 100 was optimum because i have never seen any thing else. server change i still dont see a change in the 100 green only until in game i may have 60-80 ping

The Jokes On U3 votes

I used to play between 7 - 14 ping. I'm at 60, unplayable thanks Riot.

JavelinJoe2 votes

60 is more than enough to be 'playable'

SHITTY GARBAGE TRASH SERVER amo .. seriously cool i get 40 ping now! oh wait NO! went to 8000 in a sec oh and im dead plus dc! :D enjoy this stupid server bring back the old at least 90 was stable.

RattleKnight2 votes

Its funny how i just moved to Atlanta 2 weeks ago from California. My ping in Cali (San Diego) was 40 all the time. When moved to Atlanta, ping was 86-90 and I felt really bad. But after the server relocated in Chicago it dropped to 48~ 50. So there is a 36 ping different right there for Atlanta people.

Daedalus8712 votes

I'm still trying to figure out why Riot didn't keep the server in Portland along with the new one in Chicago.

I doubt it would cost that much (compared to their revenue/profit).

"But it would split NA in half!"

So make it so you could switch between NA servers. I mean, a lot of other games let you switch between servers. Add redundancy to the system, etc, etc.

The only reason that I can come up with to not have 2 NA servers is because all Riot cares about is the LC$BIGPLAY$ and $$$. There is a lot that is consistent with that.

http://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/gameplay-balance/B1wK9bFc-fuck-this-new-chicago-server?comment=001c0004 Those of us in montana, idaho and wyoming watched our pings go from 40 to between 200-300. I guess we got sacrificed so that millions more could play...

JavelinJoe1 votes

Give it some time. They will probably be doing some balancing with signal strength and other stuff. Unanticipated changes are common when server relocation happens. 200-300 should not be there goal and most likely isn't (idk, don't work for riot).

Chaserone1 votes

So, Im curious... how long do we have to wait for the insane ping (200-300ms) to go away?

vargo2 votes

went from 38-41 to 78-81 man cmon riot why r u so fucking cheap get another server

Hidden Strikers2 votes

Does anyone else near Cali or the NA west coast in general get like random 5k ping spikes?

I'm from Ontario, Canada. Ever since I started playing League, both me and East Coasters have suffered from 70-80 ping and 80+ spike lag from the NA servers when it was in the west coast.

Suck it up and deal with it. We did.

Did you even read past the second sentence? You're kinda making a fool out of yourself.

Vincent Lucius

Wait. How is this possible? I thought that all Canadians were stereotypically nice! South Park lied to me? Scott Pilgrim lied to me? You, sir or Madame, have shattered my dreams of running off to Canadia to feast on beaver flesh and drown sorrows in maple syrup!

But really, may want to read that this is one of the nice posts and not one of the bitchy ones.

I am nice, just not to cry babies.

the Anarchit3cht1 votes

I'll keep in mind that thanking Riot for equalizing the playing field for the majority of players is being a cry baby. Maybe I should just whine that its not fair they get 25 ping while I get anywhere from like 70-90(which is virtually what I always had)
