Honest question, don't down vote. Why do we lose more points than we gain?

I've played League for three years. I have a Gold account, and a Bronze (three previous years Silver) account. I'm just curious why you give less points for wins than you take away for losses?

Now, before I'm flamed, hear me out. I understand losing many matches means you're not ranked where you should be. That is entirely understandable. However, many, many times the situation is just having an off day. That being said, if you're losing more points than you're gaining, doesn't it make it intensely more challenging to scale up in levels? Even if your KDA, and ward placement, and team morale is much better than the average player in your current ranking?

My solution (this is VERY cut and dry, so it has much room for improvement): 25 points gained for winning/losing, while above 50% win rate; 20 points for winning/losing, while at 50% win rate; 15 points for winning/losing while below 50% win rate.

Please consider changing this, because I know plenty of players who are quite skilled; however, it's too challenging for them to increase ranks, because the points lost are so steep. I don't believe points lost should EVER be greater than points gained. Even in my current Gold account, I'm winning 2-3 matches and losing 1 and still being held back by a point loss that is 50% greater than my points earned.

Again, if there's something I'm missing, please inform me. There's no reason to down-vote this. This is honest inquiry that I'm quite concerned about.

Why do we lose more points than we gain?

We don't.

You do.

That would mean you're either Diamond and going up, or you play once in a Blue Moon. Someone's clearly an attention wh0re trying to get up-votes.

Bro, I have two Gold accounts now; ranking on other accounts isn't the issue. The problem is when an account is so low, it is near impossible to raise it to where your actual skill level should be, because you have to win significantly more matches than you lose.

The situation should simply be: win more than you lose, and you will slowly/steadily increase in rank.

OP, the MMR system calculates you to be at a higher tier/division than you're proving to be in terms of winning. If you want to climb, you need to start winning more against your current peers.

I think this is the true answer to the OP's question. I have actually seen something like this. I ended at Bronze 3 at the end of pre-season(I was B5 when season 5 ended, but found a friend to climb with) After my provisional matches where I went 8-2 I was placed in B5 again. The first day of season my friend and I went on a 6 game win streak and I was winning 25 LP a game and reached B4 on day 1. After that I started winning below 25 LP, still managed to climb to B3 and even reached B2 for a bit before being demoted back down to B3.

Now I normally win between 17 and 21 LP and lose somewhere between the same amount as well. But I know if I win 2 out of 3 games I'm still gaining LP, it's those losing streaks that do me in.

This happens when the matchmaking system thinks it's placed you where you belong. I believe it will start giving you more points for wins and less for losses if you go on a losing streak, in order to balance things out and maintain your current position.

If you wish to climb you have to convince the system you are not placed correctly by climbing anyway. Climbing should be easier after you convince it, but it's that initial push that is the hardest.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but this is my understanding.

It is exactly the other way around. If you win a lot, system will start granting you more LP for a win, because it will assume you are i.e. plat player who got silver after unlucky provisional, so it wants to push you up.

If you lose a lot, it will grant you less LP, because it will think that you are currently placed to high for your skill level, and will try to push you down.

This is basically correct.

When your mmr/elo (what used to rank players) is different from your League ranking (what is publicly shown), the system will grant or take away more points, If it thinks you are higher than where you should be, you will earn less for a win and more or a loss. If it thinks you are lower than where you should be, you will earn more for win and less for a loss.

It's basically representing the lag period between mmr/elo and League Points.

The closer you get to a 50% win rate, the smaller the change in points in either direction

Here is an example. You are Gold 3 and on a 15 game lossing streak.

THe game is seeing you are not playing at a gold 3 level so it is lowering your hidden MMR until you are able to play well enough to win about as much as you lose.

Since you are at face value ranked so much higher then the people you are facing it will give them more for beating you and take more for them beating you in other words doing what should not be the result.

It will also give you less for beating them since by all means you should be beating them and take less from them because they should lose.

For context think of it as beating that dragon that is 20 levels above or below what you should be able to beat. The one that is 20 levels lower will likely not give you much of anything but the one 20 levels higher is going to give you a shit ton of stuff that you don't have.

You are losing to the dragon 20 levels below you currently but in this example you will actually lose stuff for losing to dragons.

No, I definitely understand that. What I'm not grasping is why it's not just 1:1 every match, period (i.e. you gain 20 points for winning, lose 20 points for losing). That is essentially the exact same, except that it's balanced. It's like in billiards, if you're ranked a 7 and your opponent is ranked a 1, you have to win five matches to their two to progress.. it's an unfair representation of skill that only benefits the lesser player.

Side note (different topic): why do we always start each season based on our previous season's performance? This is an excellent question, considering if you create a new account (assuming you're a solid player), you are almost guaranteed a Gold ranking for placement. In contrary, if your main was a Silver V the previous season, the highest rank you can achieve is Bronze I.

Bottom line - there is nothing balanced about their ranking system.

Who's 'we'? lol...

Your League is nothing but a pointless cosmetic, what actually judges your ranking is your hidden MMR (It's probably just ELO... ) . The cosmetic League you see only 'softly' reflects your MMR because Rito thought it would make people less butthurt if they didn't get instantly demoted out of a League from a losing streak (and vice versa).

Think of it like shoving around a gallon of milk where your MMR is the bottle and the cosmetic rank is the milk inside. If you push the carton to the left really fast, it takes the milk inside a little bit of time to catch up to where the bottle is because inertia is a property of matter. In the same way, because the cosmetic rank doesn't precisely match up with your real MMR, it just changes the number of points you gain/lose in order to compensate for the difference.

I have two Gold accounts, and I'm happy to have those. The "we" is for people who have created accounts a while back, before we ever got good at the game, and those accounts are doomed to stay in the low tiers because we can't win 75%+ matches on them.

Ranks get reset every season so it really doesn't matter how old your account is...

I recommend you spend a little time reading about how LoL's ranked system works instead of claiming to be 'doomed to low tiers' by the system.

Nah, man. You don't seem to understand how it works. Leave it to pro's to answer my question. Thanks.

You getting salty AF doesn't mean the system's broken.
