Trinity is full of stats that ekko loves as a fighter/skirmisher. And Abyssal is a normal item for mid laners and AP champs in general, including ekko.

The whole Tank build is a complete misnomer, since he doesn't fill the role of a Tank when building defensive itemization. (Really it's a Bruiser build.)
And I've seen at least 3 flavors of such a build. The Sunfire/ICB combo, the RoA build, and now a TF build. The Fire and Ice build, was pretty obnoxious since What wave clear he lost with not build AP, was made up buy the AoE from those two item, while simultaneously building defenses. I like the RoA bruiser Build because it plays off his AP scaling, but does have some noticable flaws. RoA takes time to stack, and you don't get the CDR you would otherwise have, pushing your powerspike until later in the game.
The most recent bruiser build, with TF, I don't actually like, but at the same time, is much fairer. Because TF represents a window, in which Ekko is still squishy, since he's not building Tanky right away. TF is usually followed by Raduins, to make up for the lost of Armor from ICB and Sunfire. Meaning that this build also lacks the wave clear.
And their is one more item to consider, the Dark Ring. Since the Dark ring has really good synergy with the Corrupting potion it gives a slightly stronger advantage to Early game. (Assuming it's more useful than rushing your first main items) And on the off chance that you actually snowball, you can upgrade it, to a Mejia's, and on a Bruiser build, that gives you really high damage, and near impossible to shut down.
As for Bruiser Ekko as a whole. I really can't see anything significant happening to it. partially because he has a Melee's kit. which works well with defensive items. (His secondary role is fighter) but also because Riot only cares to the point where Bruiser Ekko is balanced. They won't feverishly suppress that option, only on the grounds that he should be an Assassin.

That's generally more offensive items than I would put in a Bruiser build. But the Lichbane + Nashor's does say skirmisher.
As a general rule of thumb, you shouldn't go full glass cannon as a melee, even if you are an Assassin. The tinyest bit of defenses can prevent you from blowing up when going in. Or give you a life line in a pinch.

JJI7441 votesThats not even tank Ekko. Tank goes RoA or Trinity into full tank items, and is a lot more annoying that what you faced. Trinity+Abysal isn't even a great item combo, Trinity dealing physical damage with Abysal lowering MR.
