Is autofill / Secondary picks healthy for Ranked matchmaking?
TLDR : I don't think multirole selection and autofill have a place in ranked matchmaking, but do have their place in normal matchmaking.
In my opinion, ranked gameplay suffers greatly due to both autofill and secondary roles. I strongly think that creating an opt-in to wait for longer queue times in exchange for a guaranteed role in the game, or the complete removal of autofill / secondary roles in ranked queue would make the quality of each ranked game significantly greater, thereby increasing player satisfaction and mean performance (as well as potentially reducing toxicity).
To preface, I've had more than a couple of games in recent history where I queue'd up with my duo partner to go ADC / SUPPORT botlane, but the game throws one or both of us into any different position. I play within 10 feet of my duo partner IRL, and I cannot stand either being put into a position where I am at a severe disadvantage through my lack of gameplay experience and knowledge of said position, my limited champion selection, or my lack of consistent teamwork capability. At my rank, it is a huge determining factor for our win %chance to play the lane we are experienced in. I can understand alleviating queue times in normal games, where the goal of the game is to play it through, but in a ranked environment, I have a hard time thinking of any good rationale to not being given a direct position, especially since the goal of ranked games is to WIN. Players will typically reflect that attitude by only playing their strongest picks with (hopefully) their best mindset.
When I or my duo partner get autofilled or positioned away from each other, it heavily disrupts the flow of both game and mindset, both DURING and AFTER the game itself. It creates frustration at the system in place, at the idea that we couldn't perform our best at our rank due to a flawed system designed to alleviate the wait for a game, but in doing so creates strong feelings of time being wasted, both because we cannot perform to our greatest potential, and because if we lose said game, it becomes incredibly difficult to review the game with the mindset of "I tried my best", instead becoming "I got screwed over" because you were put into a position you were uncomfortable playing, or in my case, I was taken away from my duo partner in game.
I really would like some feedback, hopefully from a Rioter, as to their thoughts on the multi-role system and autofill, and their place in ranked matchmaking.
