Doesn't Mastery Lvl 6 and 7 punish people who play off meta champs as supports?

Riot said before that they do not want to enforce the meta. There are quite a few people that play off meta supports including Vel'Koz, Brand, Annie, Zyra, Lux, Nautilus, Tahm Kench, Fiddlesticks etc. These champions are all played in other roles that would generally yield them better scores. Thus, if you're supporting correctly, meaning you have many assists and a lot less kills, you will never get an S- or above on those champions.

That means if you play an off meta support that is effective but not popular, you are not getting rewarded for it.

Isn't there an issue here?

nope because riot knows if you play support or mid with that champ and takes that into account.

Support Annie and Mid Annie are graded differently for example, just like with every other champ.

Source please?

As far as I can tell, each champion is graded the same way.

That says "overall performance in the role" and "where you’re playing them"? If for example, Vel's role is mid but he's being played in support, doesn't that mean he's at a disadvantage?

no.

the system compares players with other players who played the same champ in the same role.

So sup vel players get compared to other players who played vel sup too

I seem to be misunderstanding something then. What's the difference between "overall performance in the role" and "where you’re playing them"?

Overall performance in the role is how well you did. Did you do what that role was intended to do...

Where you are playing them is what role you are playing as.

For instance, I pick Syndra and i decide to be the jungler (never have just using this as an example). Where i am playing her is jungle. My overall perfomance with her would be how well i did.

Ok the full sentence is "Grades are awarded based on your overall performance in the role along with the champion you’re playing and, crucially, where you’re playing them."

Riot said "in the role" which in this case would be jungle and then "where you're playing them" which is jungle again apparently, so isn't that the same thing?

Overall Performance in the role means how you do in said role...

Basically if i have like 50 assists, placed a lot of wards, 0 deaths, was helping with objectives, as say a Gangplank support, I'd more than likely get an S. That is because i performed well.

While where i played him is what role, not how well i did in said role.

if im not mistaken its based on averages across all players saying the same champ and role. for example, say the average tahm kench support goes 4/4/16 with like 30 cs per game (made those up) and you go 8/2/34 with 40cs you will most likely get an S rank. but if you do worse then that average you'll probably get a lower rank. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vX2mbqN9HfQ this is a good video on it.
