Let's talk about Aurelion Sol

Winek Chan··2 votes·1,733 views

Hello, dear summoners!

I'm Winek from the EUW server. I'd like to talk about Aurelion Sol. AurelionSol I've got ASol a good while ago, but I was mainly playing him trolly AD just for the sake of shit. But recently, I love playing him AP mid, sometimes even support.

http://puu.sh/tkQDU/33c8daa3e8.jpg

Look at this game! Everything's going well! Do you know why? Because Shaco never ganked me anyway. Let's take another example, okay?

http://puu.sh/tkQGO/5eafb1859b.jpg

This is an average game with Aurelion Sol with me. Enemy team had 2 assassin, which probably killed me 90% of the time (Akali and Diana).

So, didn't I want to talk about Aurelion Sol here? After this short introduction, let's get straight to the point:

Aurelion Sol desperately need a buff.

In this thread, I'll talk about what's wrong with Aurelion and how things could be fixed on him- mainly a few ideas of mine. Additionally, if you take my rank (unranked) to fill your opinion, leave this thread. I want real opinions, not asshole opinions based on my rank. I may not be high elo, I can still see some things are wrong. I simply don't want to play ranked because it's full of toxic fucks from what I've seen in a game of mine, and I want to play this game for fun, not to tryhard. Additionally, meta breakers are not welcome in ranked. Without further ado;

Center of the Universe

What it does - Stars orbit near Aurelion Sol, damaging enemies.

What's wrong with it - First off, this passive can not be turned off, which can be an extreme burden sometimes, considering stars are visible in bushes, or that sometimes you are really weak in the jungle, and your stars decide to poke those little raptors accidentally. My other problem is of course, that because of this passive, you are unable to take anyone by surprise in bushes - and I'll define later on how other abilities wouldn't help at all on it.

What could we do about it - Either remove the ridiculous visibility in bushes, or do something to retract stars. Sometimes you're escaping from them, as your E is on cooldown, you tricked them somehow, you want to go in a bush, but you just remember ASol can't go in bushes anyway. It's disgusting that there are bush here but you can't use them.

Starsurge

What it does - Aurelion Sol creates an expanding disk, which explodes to stun and damage enemies when it moves too far away from him.

What's wrong with it - Predictable, slow. Well, apart from that, it's the fact you can't detonate early that kills my boner. You are unable to defend yourself from an assassin bursting shits right in your face.

What could we do about it - I'd really love to actually be able to defend myself. If you compare other Mage/Fighter like Ryze or Swain, you can see they have defensive options if shat on melee. Aurelion, in melee, won't be able to do shit except for his ult, which again has flaws I'll come on later about. So here's my idea: after throwing the expanding disk, it leaves stardust behind itself for 4 seconds. After 4 seconds, it stop creating itself, and the current stardust that was pooped behind slowly fades away. While in the stardust, Aurelion sol could benefit of 20/25/30/35/40% movement speed and slows enemy by 20%, allowing him not to jerk his Q away as he get shat on melee.

Celestial Expansion

What it does - Well yeah, that's why we call him Mage/Fighter. I'm still deceived tho, Ryze and Swain, from level 6, have very huge burst, whilst Aurelion lacks it unless you spam your stars on the foe.

What's wrong with it - Prepare yourself. I've played a game with my friend, a 1v1, Quinn vs Aurelion, just for fun, and I realized how disgusting it is. Early game, I was winning, because landing my stun was easy, since he was unaware of how to play against Aurelion. After me getting two kills, he understood how easy it was! First, dodge Starsurge and you win. Afterwhat, shut down my Celestial Expansion- for that, nothing easier than Vault. Okay, my stars retracted back! Now I have to wait 4 seconds before reactivating this ability! He kept using Vault on me, which made me more than fricken useless, I was running away, spamming this W button and complaining about this self-silence. It's absurd. As soon as you get a single cc, you get useless for 4 seconds. I got chain cc'd in that game, it was disgusting, I was harmless most of the time, my friend even abused the blind spot in Aurelion Sol, attacking me freely as I tried to move away and just got killed.

What could we do about it - 0.5 seconds cooldown between the toggle on and off. This cooldown is disgusting, if you get any form of CC, you are automatically useless for 4 seconds, and 4 seconds aren't nothing. I know people may spam it to poke, but fuck it, It costs mana every time anyway. Give Aurelion a chance here.

Comet of Legends

What it does - You know about that awesome teamfight engage that works like 1% of the time because your Q is still slow and predictable...

What's wrong with it - For a mobility spell, it's bullshit. You can't use it in fights, and any type of champion damages cancel it. Why can't you fly away from that burstfuck assassin destroying your ass here? Why, Aurelion, why?

What could we do about it - Limit the cancel to only hard cc such as a stun, or maybe a silence, and turret damages, and let it be usable in fights. Sometimes you need to take distance with Akali.

Voice of Light

What it does - Roar on the enemy, push them back to outer limit, slow, etm. Good spell for damages, honestly pretty good.

What's wrong with it - You know, I got ulted by a Diana once. She was just basic attacking the rest of my hp. So then I thought... I should push that hoe back! So I used my ult. But Diana was so close to me I missed, because she moved to my back. Do you know what happened next? I'll let you guess.

What could we do about it - I was thinking - What about adding a shockwave that deals additional damages to foes inside the outer limit of Aurelion, knocking them back off and giving our poor cosmic dragon a shield? Ryze gets a shield, and Swain get a cancerous ult that makes him unkillable, so why not just give Aurelion a chance? Right now, any assassin can abuse Aurelion badly, jumping on him and instantly securing the kill on him, and even in teamfights, if that assassin's not bursted by other teammates, you can go visit Aurelion in his Graves later. ba dum tss

In review

  • 0 mobility in fights.
  • Countered by most assassin/fighters who get too close to him.
  • No disengage for that.
  • Cannot take people by surprise, and is forced to take assassins head-on.
  • Disgusting self 4 second cc after taking any other form of cc.
  • Predictable Q. It's slow.

What do you think about Aurelion? This upper list here is the TL;DR. If it's just one of them, okay... but all togehter. Aurelion can't take assassin by surprise in bushes, and is forced to engage them properly, giving them the upper hand all the time. His Q is so easy to dodge and can't detonate early, and if you're cc'd of a silence for 0.1 seconds, well nevermind, it's actually 4.1 seconds of cc.

Please give me your thought about this post! If you're against my opinion, I'd be curious to know why, so please let me know!

It sounds like you just need to learn to play him better.

It sounds like you just need to learn to play him better.

Err..No. Aurelion is the worse champion in the game to fight any high mobility champions since once you're inside of his stars he can't do ANYTHING besides autoattack you. And at that range, dodging his ult is easy.

I'd argue it's a little of column A and a little of column B. There is definitely room for him/her to improve at the champion, but Aurelion Sol has such a glaring weakness against gap-closing, assassination champions, the likes of which have never been exposed on a champion until his release. If Riot is going to make a champion have such a HUGE defense hole, they need to make the champion more rewarding to play. His current state does not make him more rewarding than risky given how prevalent assassins are in the meta. If anyone who is competent with an assassin plays against an Aurelion Sol, the Sol will lose by a landslide, no matter which assassin you pick. The champion is not balanced in the slightest. I used to argue that his insane sustained damage was worth the cost of his defense against gap-closers but then they nerfed it a couple of times. Now you trade off safety for damage that can be easily delivered by other champions of the same class.

Let me spell out the scope of his weakness: Unless you have your ultimate available, or flash, you CANNNOT apply ANY spell damage to a champion that is standing right on top of you AT ALL. No other champion has a mechanic like this, and my argument is that he isn't appropriately compensated for this. I do think Riot realizes this and the mini-rework will address some of this. I was honestly shocked given Riot's track record and stigma for consistency in gameplay to allow a mechanic like this to exist.

Yeah I need to learn what to do when Diana dodges my Q so easily by just walking to the side, using Q on me, ult and do all shits, and her extremely close range makes me miss my ult. I know I'm not an expert with him but are you really gonna say it's balanced to not being able to do anything if an enemy champion is inside the stars?

ZT Xperimentor4 votes

Just let him double cast his Q to pop it early, so he can at least stun someone who jumps on his face.

Profirix2 votes

That minor change would go a long way to giving him some consistency, which he desperately needs.

Winek Chan2 votes

Just having this change would be wonderful enough...

I really don't want to sound like I'm flaming you. I mean this in the most sincere and honest way possible, take it or leave it. You simply are not good enough at the champion's mechanics to be able to use him to his full potential. A few examples:

your stars decide to poke those little raptors accidentally (Should never happen if you're paying attention...)

But Diana was so close to me I missed, because she moved to my back. (You missed... That's not the champion being under-powered, you simply missed...)

I've played a game with my friend, a 1v1, Quinn vs Aurelion, just for fun, and I realized how disgusting it is. (If you play Caitlin against Braum you will get similar results. The fact is you played against a champion who hard counters you...)

Well, apart from that, it's the fact you can't detonate early that kills my boner. (You can detonate it very quickly if you cast it then run the opposite direction, and it explodes once it reaches your outer limit.)

Swain, from level 6, have very huge burst, whilst Aurelion lacks it unless you spam your stars on the foe. (Aurelion sol's burst lvl 6: lvl 3 W toggled base dmg 65/sec for 4 seconds 260 +Lvl 1 Q base damage 70+ Lvl 1 R 150= _490 base damage. _

Swain burst lvl 6= Lvl 1 E base damage 50/4 seconds+ Lvl 3 Q base damage 65/sec for 4 sec + 20% increased dmg from E 315+ lvl 1 W base dmg 80+ 20% increased dmg from E 96+ lvl 1 R base damage 1raven/2seconds + 20% increased dmg 120= 531 base damage

Conclusion, they are not that different. In case you want to check my math.... )

So, I put in a decent amount of effort to show you where you are misguided hopefully you take the time to read through it and consider my points.

Winek Chan

I'll go in order then.

When I'm being chased I have better things to do than think about the raptors inside the fog of war. The stars SHOULD be retractable. It's not only about the raptors- like I said, you can't hide either, which makes me sick.

I know I missed, it's my fault, but the fact I missed made me die instantly. I'm sorry, but Aurelion's ult should not be the ultimate life savior everyone needs, it needs mechanics so that i can disengage, because if I miss my ult then it's over for me, I'm sorry but it's no way balanced. Ryze can snare and run, swain can snare+slow and run. Aurelion can't do anything.

I don't care how the champion counters me, that's not the point here, read properly next time. It's about the disgusting cooldown on the W once you get cc'd, because Quinn often jumped on me and forced me to flee because I couldn't reactivate my W fast enough.

You think I haven't tried that? They stick to you way too close on melee attacks, so it's really hard to land it imo.

I'm sorry but we can't really compare Swain and Aurelion in that case- What I mean by burst is that he can actually move, the snare will give him actually a chance of attacking more, as well as the slow. He's a mage after all. Once an enemy gets inside of Aurelion's stars he lose a lot of his damages, you cannot deny that. Even if you burn your ult to push them back, they can run away for a moment, then dash back to you, and look, you don't have your ult anymore. Good night Aurelion.

What you did in your post is to take what I did "bad" and affirm that it makes me a bad Aurelion player. You omitted every other details I've mentioned. Why do you mention being "countered" by Quinn? Did I say "omg quinn is so op against aurelion, we have to buff aurelion"- Read clearly what I wrote. It's unrelated about how Quinn counters me. Just that tells me you are trying to find any possible holes in my argument to put it in a bad way, which is something incorrect. I know I'm not the best Aurelion player and some people are 9825340 times more better than me, but sorry, I know how to play Aurelion, thank you. I've had good games when I was against mages principally, and when I play support Aurelion, I do pretty good-ish in lane, until the assassin comes out to play with me.

Tell me what I have to do when I don't have an ult and Diana jumps on me, pull me back in and slow?

tfw op has 7 games played on aurelion sol and suddenly becomes an expert on how to balance him.

Winek Chan1 votes

Okay, I do not have 7 games on him, I played him a long time ago, and i noticed those weakness. I am no way an expert on him, I'm just calling out his weakness that I feel is unbalanced.

Note to you guys. Please don't come here to say "learn 2 pley" unless you can counter my six arguments I've dotted in the list.

It's slow.

If you can't, then close the page.

  • 0 mobility in fights.

Your team can peel for you. You can E away. Your Q grants you 10% movement speed. Your E passively grants you up to 45% movement speed, as long as you go same direction. Most Aurelion mains rush Boots of Swiftness and take MS quints. Stormraiders Surge is also very popular. You can stand on the opposite side of the wall from the enemies and damage them with W. Rylais is a standard item.

  • Countered by most assassin/fighters who get too close to him.
  • No disengage for that.

Some disengage for that. You do have your ult. Don't miss. You can build Zhonyas. Your stars continue and your team can help kill the assassin while you are in stasis. If you manage to juke and they get the direction wrong, you may open enough room to land your stun.

  • Cannot take people by surprise, and is forced to take assassins head-on.

You can E over walls from fog of war. I would say that counts as surprise. If you damage them from other side of wall, you are not taking them head-on. You make continued statements that imply you are not grouping with teammates that can do teammate-things.

  • Disgusting self 4 second cc after taking any other form of cc.

From 6 to 4 seconds, and is affected by Cooldown Reduction. The stars still do damage when not fully expanded.

  • Predictable Q. It's slow.

And it is potentially enormous, and goes over walls. Slow projectile speed is the cost you pay for its huge power potential - can hit entire enemy team.

If you can't, then close the page.

If you are looking for problems, you will find problems. If you are looking for solutions, you will find solutions.

Winek Chan1 votes
  • You cannot E in fight. Only out of combat. Getting out of fight by using the 10% movespeed of Q is pretty rough, since it will detonate quickly. I clearly wrote in fights. Out of combat, he's an incredibly mobile champion. Also, I should not be forced to build boots of swiftness and use stormraider's surge JUST to survive. How is that balanced, that you're forced to take a keystone to get mobility? Also, he W over wall is cool but unrelated to mobility tho.

  • Although building Zhonya can be cool, sometime it won't work at all. It is NOT a disengage, remember-- It's a strategy in teamfights. If you're doing a 1v1 and get an assassin jumping on you, you have barely a disengage, say Akali for example, dashes at me, I use ult to push her back, and look who's back inside my stars? The fact he can't 1v1 melee champ is disgusting.

  • Although it can be counted as a surprise, sorry but it's too different from grass. When you're in grass and that people are unaware you're here, you can do a really quick surprise attack. I mean, what do you expect if you come out from a grass and start charging an ezreal ult? People will have more reaction time. If you come over a wall and try to stun them, they have MUCH more reaction time than grass. I've failed to do that a lot because rightly my last point, the Q is too slow and straightforward, so I'd have to be miles away for it to be giant, and even then the enemy champion will have moved. -Starts to hit Ekko over wall- -Ekko dash over wall- -gg- You cannot be with team ALL the time, especially early game. Even lategame, not like I'm gonna follow my team all the time to take top farm, and then afterwards we'll go all 5 together midlane take farm.

  • Forced to build cooldown reduction to avoid a self-cc? Totally balanced. Oh yeah, I'll walk near that adc that is hitting me currently so that since my W is on cooldown I can hit him with my retracted stars! :)

  • Indeed potentially enormous, I give you a point on that. But otherwise, if it's not to hit the whole enemy team for a 1.5 stun that they can avoid by walking to the side/jungle, then it's so slow I'll be missing it all the time in lane. Even against an Aurelion Sol once, I saw his Q so predictable, unless I was right in his face.

  • I'm not looking for either, I'm looking for a solution to my problem. That's what I'm seeking.

Holy fuck, could you cry more?

Stay bad.

Winek Chan1 votes

Aww, that's so sad. Once you have no argument, all you do is insult. I'm sorry, little boy. You can go back to your room and play with your toys, the adult are having a serous discussion here. :)

ElysMustache1 votes

It is only a discussion if you listen, which you obviously don't, which is why you are bad.

Winek Chan1 votes

I'm bad at playing league because I "can't listen"?

So what are you, god? I'm supposed to obey what you say? I gave my point. You countered them. I countered your counters.

If you want to add anything, counter my point until I have nothing more to say. Or else you're the one out of arguments flaming because you want to depart on a touch of "I'm right".

Please, leave this thread. You are out of arguments.

EDIT: To add more, you said "obviously" which is something cheesy to say. Why don't you prove that I "don't listen" ?

I Ping Only2 votes

People (myself included) have given you plenty of counter arguments to most if not all of the points you have mentioned. You're just looking for a reason to say aurelion sol is bad at this point. Like I stated in my post: You simply are not good enough at the champion (and possibly even the game in general) to be able to use Sol's kit to it's potential.

Only one who gave me aids is evelynn, but even that she was pretty behind.

If you're smart enough you should know that counter arguments can be countered as well- and that's what I did. If you didn't know this, close the page. I'm here for real debate, not people that think that once you "counter argument" it's solid proof and case is closed. I'm here for a debate, so yes, if you don't know how a debate works, then close this page. Debates are made from arguments from both sides, not only yours.

Here's how you deabte:

Person 1 : I think vegetables should be washed first You : No, it's okay, they are already very clean Person 1 cannot counter your argument because it's only 1 argument per person in this debate. In the result, we are eating disgustingly dirty vegetabls for dinner.
