With the coming of the new Cleaver, Mallet seems even less attractive

One problem in League is that when you have two items that offer somewhat similar stats, when one is just better you're never going to see the alternative. This has been the case with Morello's and Athenes for some months now and has recently become the case with Cleaver and Mallet.

Both provide AD, HP, and sticking power. Both have a similar price point. And while Cleaver has significantly less HP, the 20% CDR combined with heavy armor shred more than makes up for it. And that's not even counting the much smoother buildup.

So this got me to thinking.

Why not remake Mallet while we're at it into something a little different to prevent it from competing directly with Cleaver?

Who recalls Ionic Spark? Old item that was made for Dominion, then added to Rift, and then removed from both because ADCs weren't building it (lolwut). Part of Spark's issue was that it was a dead-end item. And you know what? It's time to change that.

item 1043 +item 1028 = Ionic Spark Grants IAS, HP, and Stormcaller: Every fourth basic attack releases a Chain Lightning dealing 120 magic damage and hitting up to 4 enemy units.

Ionic Spark + item 1011 = item 3022 Grants a little more IAS, MOAR HP, and Stormcaller: Every fourth basic attack releases a Frost Blast around the target, dealing 200 magic damage to everything in the area of effect. Additionally, the primary target is slowed by 40% for 1.5 seconds (30% for ranged champions).

Thoughts?

That means that a champion sitting at 2.0 attack speed would shoot out that bonus magic damage every two seconds. No thanks.

Thank you for the downvote.

I will cherish it forever.

Please compare that damage output to how much bonus damage a champion with BotRK and 2.0 attack speed would shoot out over two seconds for a comparison.

Hitting 2.0 attack speed is a pretty major feat for most of the cast, implying heavy investment into attack speed. This damage output still wouldn't begin to approach how much hurt IAS/AD/Crit can pump out, but I feel as though it would be nice to have an alternative build focus (OnHit/Defense) as another option for auto-attackers.

It's not that difficult to reach especially when the item itself has attack speed on it as well. Enter Master Yi, Fiora, Aatrox, Warwick. a sticking slow, with bonus hp, even more attack speed, and it gives a big AoE damage proc. The last thing champions like them need is AoE damage.

Plus you'd also provide the incentive to buy it on ADCs. You're creating a snowbally item that people who already build that kind of stuff would build as free extra damage, I'm not sure how you thought that would work out.

Believe me I took a moment to consider the impact of the item, and all it does is get built in addition to what they're already building, not as an alternative.

Mallet is fine as it

Just needs it cost reduced by like 100-200

So, what's the difference between Ionic spark's effect and Statikk Shiv's??

Seriously though, I like mallet as is, it just needs to be cost effective as an AD off-tank kite/peel tool. Black Cleaver's kiting potential is slightly different because the rage passive is less than the slow and it can only help you kite while mallet helps your entire team.

Shiv is augmented by Crit chance and Crit damage. You can also run around to build up its charge and have some guaranteed burst on the first hit, however, it would stack up more slowly than Spark does. That, and Spark combined with Hurricane would be hilarious.
