I think she was intended to be an AP fighter but people found that her most abusive build (and currently most viable build) is as an AP assassin. It’s mainly because there are next to zero AP fighter itemization options that can’t be abused by mages to make themselves die less in the game and become unstoppable.

Fighter in this case is a general term for a melee champion who has limited mobility and who is not a bruiser or tank. Diana is a squishy diver - like nocturne - and thus is a relic from another age.
An assassin is hyper mobile; they can get it AND get out. A diver is a champion who has the burst to assassinate but has limited mobility that can either engage or escape but not both.
Remember kids - All melee champions are fighters, all divers are bruisers, all bruisers are tanks, but not all fighters are divers, and not all tanks are bruisers.
I feel like I have seen the structure of that last sentence from somewhere else lol
Memes aside you are right with everything in your comment

It sounds vaguely like something you would say to describe a square. All squares are rectangles, but not all rectangles are squares.
There that was the one I was thinking of lol

Diana is the AP counterpart to Wukong. They are both fighters played as assassins because that's the most optimal way to play them in this meta.
I believe (part of) the thought process was: "the Role Scale goes Tough Tank<>Fighter<>Assassin Damage" "Therefore Assassin = squishy" "Diana has a decent self-Shield" "Therefore Diana = Fighter"
(and of course Champ roles are...."highly debated" to put it politely..."

The original form is; Casters > Tanks > sustained damage > Casters Casters beat sustained damage. Tanks beat casters. Sustained damage beats tanks.
Currently though we have; Tanks < sustained damage Burst < sustained damage Sustained damage > sustained damage Sustained damage < burst (if burst gets the jump and can kill in one rotation or make the enemy flee).
(DERP, i messed up my carrots... Sorry!)
The original form is; Casters > Tanks > sustained damage > Casters
Umm...no. Wrong roles. Click here: https://na.leagueoflegends.com/en/news/champions-skins/free-rotation/new-free-champion-rotation-tahm-kench-wukong-veigar-and-more
You'll see each Champ has "Attack/Defense/etc..." stats, and a Primary Role, and usually a Secondary Role. These are the roles we are discussing.
The options are Tank, Fighter, Assassin, Mage, Marksman, Support (do not confuse "Role>Support" with "Lane>Support", although there is overlap). (note: Riot themselves have admitted these categories are fairly vague, and they don't really like them, and they use a different classification system in house. But they've yet to redo 'the system' entirely, so we're sort of stuck with both)
Anyway. Of the 6 Role-options, Diana is most certainly not a Tank, Marksman, or Support. She very much is a Mage. This leaves the quibbling between Fighter and Assassin, of which (see previous post by me).

... Okay. Im not talking about roles - im talking about archetypes. The overarching 'general rule' a champion follows. When league of legends was first introduced it was based on DotA. The general "flow" of champions was that; Casters bursted squishy sustained damage dealers. Tanks survived casters burst damage Sustained damage dealers beat tanks by hitting them a lot.
Nowadays, due to the power of crit and itemization, sustained damage > almost everything else.
Anyway...

Mages can be fighters too. A fighter is simply a broad, general term for a melee champion, as it encompasses every melee sub-class under the sun. "Mage" is a broad term for any AP champion who scales well with AP and is not a tank. Alistar and thresh scale with AP, yet are not mages. Ye ken?
This game has so many classifications and champions with overlapping types and roles that its very grey.
I mean officially there are 18 roles in league of legends, they're just dropped down to around 6.
I've played her as a fighter plenty over the years. An AP fighter, but a fighter nonetheless. These days she's played more as an assassin, though.
