Can Aatrox get a hand before rework?

Look Riot, you've already acknowledged he's practically unviable (even if he's usable here and there). If his sustain is part of the issue, can you not buff things that have more to do with his success in the game? The last time he even got a buff was in season 5...

You take Aatrox as a jungler and you'll notice immediately that his attack speed is very slow. I had to run 39.1% attack speed total to make him jungle remotely fast. While I don't mind speed builds, the extra 5.3% came from glyphs, making defense a no-go. He's a frontliner, so defense is at least somewhat important. Also important to note that Aatrox's gauge fills too slowly when using abilities despite it being a major component when it comes to jungle clear speed.

For Blood Well. Unlike Zac's revive, Aatrox's leaves himself extremely vulnerable because Aatrox does not primarily build tank, and the revival process itself happens way too slowly. The passive seems to forget that Aatrox spends % max HP to combat in the first place, as the heal is tiny even with a full Blood Well. 10% of max HP is already gone if you decide to use Q.

The other significant problem that Riot seems to be failing to address before any rework is that Q+R literally only takes ~1.5 seconds to do. That is the length of time assassins use to burst people, and as Aatrox is all-in character, it should be the case for him as well. But it deals a pitiful 270 base damage with only 60% total bonus AD scaling, being beaten directly by many champion basic spells. In fact, a Fury empowered Q from Renekton at lv3 is 180 base damage with 120% bonus AD scaling, two thirds of Aatrox's Q+R damage on base damage alone and much better scaling. It would be better for Aatrox to just R and auto attack instead of use any other abilities at all really because the DPS is too low. That also would mean he'd get kited however. That's where the pattern heads to for Aatrox's late game and the rest is history. It's why he's bad as a character.

In short, what I'd like to see happen before any rework is:

  1. Buff Aatrox's base attack speed. Buffing his passive again (attack-speed wise) is no good because dying would only hurt Aatrox more. Irelia is allowed to exist with true damage on her W and 0.665 attack speed, Aatrox who does not have true damage should be allowed that much as well. It's a slight buff but it saves a lot of space on the rune page if you decide to jungle.

  2. Give Aatrox's ultimate AD scaling. This is long overdue but better now than never. Other "burst" type ultimates in the top lane scale based on missing health, but since Aatrox is an initiator type, I believe his should scale based on current % HP in addition to the AD scaling. In my opinion, this is the main reason Aatrox is not doing so well right now.

  3. Blood Well needs to revive Aatrox within 1 second. Any more than that and it's a potential risk for himself and his team. He already has to dumpster his DPS if he does die due to his Blood Well's attack speed bonus being lost.

If any of this makes Aatrox too strong somehow, you can just hotfix him. If a champion is bad then they need to be buffed to be at least usable, especially for characters that don't fit the current meta (Cho'Gath is an exception I like to mention but point still stands that no champ should be unusable).

I refuse to accept that Aatrox's entire playstyle be "re-imagined" when only his W really needs a rework (and has always been the problem). Everything else needs to be buffed to modern standards of the top lane/jungle. Better to say something now before the rework team starts cooking up the coc- I mean ideas.

EDIT: Okay, I had a feeling it'd head here but most people do want HP costs to go down for Aatrox. I think we can all agree on making it cost current % HP like Zac instead of total %.

I'm an Aatrox main, but I play him exclusively in the top lane. I don't feel like Aatrox's AS needs to be increased, I get like 20% from runes, while still getting some armour, MR, and AD. In lane his passive is pretty easy to keep up, making his AS even higher, so I normally build a Death's Dance or Hydra, before investing in some AS. I can agree with giving Aatrox's ult AD scaling, but the ability is just kinda meh overall. It's a good buff for Aatrox when he uses it, but it just doesn't fit thematically, so I would like to see it replaced. If Blood Well's revive was a single second, it would be pretty OP.

Things I'd like to see: Removing the scaling AS from his passive and replacing it with something else. It just makes shutting him down or poking him away so much more devastating, when it's tied to his passive. Putting flat AS increase on his W. This would give people a reason to put more points into his W, before his E/Q, simply because the current bonus you get for leveling his W is pretty terrible. Something like, 10/20/30/40/50% AS increase, would be nice. Reducing the cost of his E. At times, it isn't worth using this ability to poke, as it will cost you more health than it will do damage. This is one of Aatrox's most unique abilities, and his only real poke, but it costs so much to use. Reducing the cost, or perhaps giving health back for hitting enemy champs with it would be cool.

halve his q cost, buff e cooldown, fix base stats.

dont make his passive consume bloodwell, have the heal still go off how much it's filled, but dont consume the bar, just use it as a number for health gained, because he becomes useless after losing 55% attack speed. bork is noob trap he needs AD to be relevant. he does no damage without building damage and he cant tank without being FULL tank. champions these days get free stats and Aatrox's only free stat is attack speed that's poorly attached to his passive that he cant sustain because he dies too quickly in a fight unless he's extremely tanky or ahead.

my only success with him is building 2-3 flat AD items and then bruiser items/GA.

also give his ultimate active a diana E effect

Just remove his Blood Well entirely and let him revive with some % of his max HP. Then give him a regular amount of base attack speed. The new passive also makes up for the removal of the critical heal on Blood Thirst.

Innate -- Return of the Darkin Blade: When Aatrox dies, he instead goes into stasis for 3 seconds, cleansing him of all negative effects immediately upon entering. Over that time, Aatrox heals for 35% of his maximum health. This passive has a cooldown of (225 - 4.16*champion level).

Aatrox receives 1% additional healing for every 1% max HP he is missing.

My other suggestion would be to make his Blood Thirst part of his W (the heal on every third hit) a passive part of the skill, and make the Blood Price (the empowererd auto) an active that grants an empowered auto. Something like this:

W -- Blood Thirst:

Passive: Aatrox heals himself for 20/25/30/35/40 (+25% Bonus AD) every third attack. Aatrox's auto attacks reduce the cooldown of the active ability by 0.25 seconds on hit.

Active: Aatrox's next auto attack deals 60/95/130/165/200 (+100% Bonus AD) as bonus on-hit physical damage.

Cost: 15/23.75/32.5/41.25/50 (+25% Bonus AD) health Cooldown: 7

I used some current values because they exist.

Tbh none of this would really fix or help aatrox at all, these aren't his problems I've made a post on him, but can't get any exposure for it.

i think its kinda dumb that his spells have % costs but he has flat healing

What about making his Q non telegraphed and shitty as fuck? Or make it rewarding to land (So if you land the knockup it deals more damage and gives you a small buff)

Maybe make his bloodwell scale off max health so like he has a build path to focus on now? Cause ATM building ad is bad because you'll kys with damage W and you'll die to cc and building tank is bad beause of Q and E costs/

His sustain isn't really his biggest issue, it's his snowballing and tower diving that's ridiculous.
