We could use a little bit of Malady

Rebonack··50 votes·3,303 views

So here's the idea.

Recurve Bow gets removed. No one misses it. Its loss will not be lamented.

Instead, we get a new combine that builds out of Dagger.

Malady!

Malady builds from a single Dagger, a combine cost, and grants 30% IAS and 15 OnHit magic damage. Malady is now the foundation for a whole class of OnHit items. BotRK could build out of it. Devourer enchant could build out of it. Wit's could build out of it. Hurricane could build out of it (gaining some OnHit damage of its own and going a long way toward making it less of a trap item). We could even have Nashor's build out of it if we really felt like it.

As a class, I think it would be fun to have items that build out of Malady focus on Defense and Utility. Have a Malady item that combines with Warden's Mail and steals some base attack speed if you get attacked. Have a Malady item that combines with some HP to bring back the old Ionic Spark. Swap Frozen Mallet over to a Malady item to stick with that defense/utility theme. Have a Malady item that grants the old BotRK passive (lifestealing OnHit magic damage) and so on and so forth. The possibilities are endless!

Basically, the goal here is to give magic damage OnHit itemization a unique niche that distinguishes it from AD/Crit itemization. AD/Crit would be superior for raw damage (by quite a bit, honestly), but Malady items would offer a nice blend of defense and offense.

UNIQUE passive: you gain bonus OnHit magic damage equal to a percentage of your bonus HP

This item on Skarner . I need somebody to check me for a pulse, ASAP!

Edit: Did some math and it seems like 2.5% of bonus HP would work well, equating to about 60 total magic damage on-hit (assuming the user has ~1800 Bonus HP, also assuming the base on-hit is 15 like Malady).

You heard it here first, folks. Malady is Rammus approved.

Also, just to toss it out there...

Frozen Mallet Malady + Giant's Belt + Ruby Grants IAS, HP, OnHit magic damage AND! UNIQUE passive: Your basic attacks slow enemy units by 40% (30% for ranged) for 4 seconds. This ability can not trigger again on the same champion for 8 seconds.

That right there? Removing the perma-slow makes it a bit less oppressive and a bit more open to counterplay, which means its stats can be less god-awful! Isn't that swell?

agbudar1 votes

its funny i have been using atk speed on rammus plus wits end mr steal works really well doing a lot of surprise butseks damage on people that dont build mr as long as my team doesnt feed....

cFlame2 votes

Maybe Riot will test this, and find that utility marksmen fit it? Or will the mobile just build these new items and still be superior.....

Joushi2 votes

Regarding Ionic Spark, it was removed because the combination of stats was awkward and only useful in fringe cases. Attack speed and health? It's not even niche on most characters. Shen, who bought it many games back in the day, was close to the only champion who ever built it. Now, you MIGHT be able to add Aatrox to that list, and in very rare cases Shyvana and Volibear.

Obviously though we should bring it back because if we have Statik Shiv + Ionic Spark Kennen we can finally fulfill the dream of just actually playing Pikachu in League of Legends.

Ionic Spark's issue was a lack of robust OnHit items to support it. Combining it with Hurricane would actually work really well. Lightning on 3/4 attacks! Pew pew pew.

Ionic Spark Malady + Stinger + Kindlegem Grants CDR, attack speed, HP, OnHit magic damage, AND! UNIQUE passive: Skill casts build two charges and basic attacks build one. At eight charges your next basic attack (OnHit) consumes the charges and releases a Chain Lightning dealing (amount) magic damage.

There you go. Grab this and Hurricane and you're now the proud owner of a giant AoE clusterfuck attack.

I don't like the idea, sounds almost as bad as that old item that reduced MR on hit.

The original Malady was a Lifesteal/IAS/OnHit item. It was weird and got replaced with the Malady that shredded MR and scaled with AP. Then it got split up between Nashor's and Wit's (good call, IMO).

This new Malady is just an advanced component like Vampire Scepter and is meant to streamline OnHit itemization.

Why do you hate OnHit itemization, Mouse? Is it because you hate freedom?

Do you mean Wit's End? Because that still exists.

I do not, look at the reply above yours.

Walrus of course. Sounds like a good way to replace Recurve and make AS+Magic damage items not be so... Bleh until their final upgrade (almost all of them are just raw AS with a giant combine cost).

Nashor's should stay with the build path it has now though, the AS/CDR Component and the AP/CDR component make it so that you can reliably build either for whichever you need most (AS if you need to apply existing effects faster, AP if you need other spells to hurt too)

Yeah, I'm pretty okay with the build Nashor's uses right now. Replacing the Stinger would be more awkward than helpful unless it built out of Stinger AND Nashor's and got a bump to its cost and IAS. But the thing is already crazy cost effective, so that probably isn't wise.

I agree with this but don't have Runaan's do on hit damage. Since it deals damage up to 3 targets. It would be kinda OP if it did bonus damage on hit.

That's just a numbers game. If gaining 15 OnHit damage all its own was too potent it could just get a cost bump to mitigate the extra power. The thing is already super-cheap. And for the record, Hurricane is very underwhelming. It's the only completed auto-attack enhancing item that provides only one type of offensive stat. Recall, AD, IAS, and Crit all multiply the power of the other stats. This means having a big heap of only one of them is almost always inferior to having two smaller heaps of two.

Malady Mondays was pretty hilarious, all things considered. The old item gave a pretty nice chunk of IAS and Lifesteal, so you could grab Whisper and a heap of Maladys and just pew-pew like crazy.

We've got 15 votes on here saying no, but we haven't gotten much of an explanation why.

If you voted no, why do you think streamlining OnHit itemization would be bad for the game?

lojician1 votes

I didn't vote. But on hit champions tend to a) be ranged because melees can't build pure offense items or reliably get many consecutive autos off. And b) be early game lane bullies because on hit doesn't scale as well as ridiculous ad autoing items.

Riot has already managed to shit up the laning phase enough without introducing a new round of on hit teemo and lulu to the mix.

Well, that's why these items are mixed offense/defense rather than pure offense. They're meant to help deliver a late game fantasy to folks that want to deal some damage but avoid exploding instantly.

I'm not sure about Bork building out of Malady. Malady is on-hit magic damage while Bork deals physical damage, although we already have that kind of distinction between the magic damage of Lich Bane's spellblade and the physical damage of spellblade on its component item, Sheen.

How about this item building into the devourer enchant?

It wouldn't be any different from the Sheen (physical damage) to Lichbane (magic damage) transition. For the record, Lichbane used to do 100% of your AP in physical damage back in the day and Riot apparently had no problem in changing that up. Is it a little odd? Sure. But it's hardly a deal-breaker.

And I should probably mention Devourer in my opening post.
