PSA: To all non-toxic players

fluxanna··41 votes·5,542 views

This is a public service announcement to all players who are not toxic a-holes.

If a player on your team who is a perfectly fine person is being harassed for some stupid, incompetent reason by someone on your team, please do jump into the teamfight. Don't stand by idly as if you don't know the guy on your team. Sometimes I've realized that I can just sit around saying nothing while my friends in real life are getting harassed by idiots. No one wants to get flamed. We would all prefer avoiding those people, however, in the end, the tribunal is the one that makes the difference. So report, and move on.

First of all, to mention LOL is not a K/D game. If you're concerned about a K/D on some unranked game, it's not like you're going to become a pro player one day. You're just not. And if your K/D/A is really the only thing that encourages you, and is also why you complain at teammates, you should probably stop playing for your teammates' sake. I.e., support players do not usually attain a great KDA. However, since I appreciate that they are helping heal, they deserve teamwork points.

The LOL community is known to be toxic around the gaming community, however it also has the potential to be a smart and friendly community (Unless you're talking about the crazy idea to rework Diana). If someone is doing bad in your game, first of all, he's obviously gone positive before. He doesn't streak 0/10/0. If you are thinking of complaining, remember we ALL have our bad games. But fine- if you think you've found someone who actually streaks negative, then, what purpose or right do you have to complain to him? It's easy for you to yell at him across game chat, but it's not like you have the guts to ring his doorbell to complain that he sucks at LOLing. So how 'bout no, don't flame people. You can make a suggestion to his tactics if you're really a competent player. However, no one, is pro enough to go around bashing others. And also, it is a fact that pros do not bash their teammates either.

If you see these teammate-bashing assholes, please step in and tell the guy to fuck off. Defend your teammates. Suppose one person is getting pissed at another for stealing kills. Player 1 did most of the damage, of course, and player 2 came in at the last second. This is just an unintentional mistake. People can absolutely make a note and remind others players to not KS. However if your teammate will yodel on and on for over a minute about a small accident, and does not stop his verbal diarrhea and general abhorrence, YOU've the responsability to say something. This game isn't some internet beer pub. Seriously. It's a game.

It's simple. You are preventing perfectly nice people from being upset for the rest of the game because one guy couldn't care less for his life.

Today... your teammate. Tomorrow... you.

This has been a public service announcement. Please defend your own teammates to the best of your abilities. Thank you.

And please, upvote this so everyone can see it.

I actually did this very recently in a ranked game where 2 toxic players (our jg & adc) were having a negative attitude all game & flaming our Teemo. Yes,I was defending the Teemo & kindly asking them to chill with the attitude (a toxic attitude is much worse than feeding).Yes,we lost.Yes,I reported them & they probably reported me. And I kind of expected it to happen because the adc stated they "needed" to win the game to get out of bronze 2 or something.Yeah, they were bitchy because they weren't winning.

Will I continue defend players?Yes,but only for a bit. Then,I'll ask the abused player to mute them if the toxicity goes on too long because I can't focus on defending you all game.We can report them afterwards, but during the game,we should focus on the game (unless life or the bathroom happens of course) & not the chat of toxic ass players.

However if your teammate yodels on and on for over a minute about unintentional steals, and does not stop his verbal diarrhea, YOU have to say something.

And then you get reported.

I stopped defending the guy who gets flamed because the flamer sure isn't going to stop flaming and then he just reports me too.

so wait you would rather let someone else get flamed and report cause the flamer cant let something go?? cause you stick up for someone doesnt mean you have to break any rules of the summoner code... just ask them to lay off.. inform them that they are both offensive and are ruining your gaming experience... kill them with kindness.. but in no way engage them in a verbal battle... that way when they report you tribunal will see in chat logs that they were being the douche bags and not you...

Delioth1 votes

Just make sure not to use offensive language anywhere in the game- Tribunal's down but their chat service thingy will take cases that've been reported and issue warnings/chat restrictions/penalties to reported players who've used offensive language. And I've heard that they have a pretty loose term of 'offensive language.' I remember a Red saying that 'gg ez scrub' would count as offensive language.

who does want to get reported?? but u not helping a person who is being flamed for something out of their control isnt helping either.. If you saw an old lady being verbally assaulted by someone you wouldnt step in and tell that person to leave her alone?? If you said Yes to this then your also apart of the problem.. the ragers and flamers in this game think they can just log in and rip on anyone who doesnt do what they think should be done.. they are always willing to point everyone elses short comings in games but when someone else asks something like "why didnt you come to drag to help??" they go off the deep end and rage out..

and it is the community's job to calm down flamers.. thats what a community does.. protects the less fortunate...

fluxanna4 votes

No, don't downvote him. What you're saying really does sound nice, but I honestly am not sure if YOU getting reported affects you. Are you sure that when some flamer reports you, you actually get repercussions? You can absolutely defend yourself very easily if it comes to that. However that's amazing that you actually defend people who get flamed. I have yet to see it in my games.

The chance of pulling out of the morale nosedive by talking is pretty much zero. Even if you can get them to shut up, they still won't believe a win is possible and they will mostly focus on buffing their own KD and passive-aggressively trying to sabotage the other person's KD so they can blame the other person when they inevitably lose.

ALL you (or someone else on your team) can do is carry the team until morale increases and people realise they might actually win if they stop raging.

If things are bad enough that none of the level headed people on your team can carry? Well, the game is a loss. The best you can hope for is that you can make your team face the loss with dignity, but that doesn't change the fact that it's a loss.

At that point, you dig yourself a hole if you verbally intervene. If you tell the flamer to cut it out, you'll get flamed too and potentially earn yourself a report for verbal harrassment - and chat restrictions are entirely automated, so this could easily get you in trouble. If you defend the victim, you get a fuzzy feeling of doing the right thing which rapidly evaporates when the target of the flaming turns against you because no one likes a white knight (and because he realises you're antagonising the flamer, so if he can stoke the fire, the flamer may get too busy flaming you and let him off the hook...) and you may get reported by an angry victim and/or the flamer.

I've received way too many reports by standing up for someone and gotten nothing for it. So now I just ignore the rage and try to carry; if it doesn't work, I surrender. It's not my job to don a bat cloak and kick flamers in the head. That's why Riot hired Lyte. Let him deal with it.

uh actually when I look at the people that do really badly, their history is all losses with all negative games with a few wins here and there where they get carried. So no. Bad players are just bad. Stop making excuses for them as it makes your whole post fall apart from the beginning.

fluxanna4 votes

I do really badly from time to time. In ANY game.

Rock Rockburgh1 votes

There are some players for whom this is the case, sure; even then it's wrong to flame them.

But what you have to consider is that League is, in a way, a zero-sum game. Someone gets a kill, but that means somebody else just died. Unless every single player goes even, there will be negative scores in every game.

But really... if they're bad, your best bet is to help them improve. I think we'd have a lot less low-skill players if more people took on that outlook. Talk to them in postgame, offer advice as you go; look friendly and you'll be seen as friendly. That morale boost alone can make a pretty big impact on how someone plays.

Knucklefist1 votes

People dont want advice. You think the 0 and 15 jax who picked him because he wasnt banned and hes o.p. and didnt want the other team to have him cares about your tips? Of course not. Did he care when he got ganked 10 times laning and never warded? Of course not. Even though you told him to buy a ward every death after the second one.

It shouldnt be a one way street. You shouldnt be able to be banned for flaming someone for sucking yet them not recieve any kind of punishment for playing so poorly. I look at some peoples histories and they have horrible scores even when they win. Not a single game with a good score. They shouldnt be allowed to keep playing ranked ruining other peoples experiences. They should have to go play normal drafts like the rank restricted people until they can turn their gameplay around. There's almost no incentive for the really bad people to even try to get any better or stop playing ranked. Not only do they hold people like myself down throwing games, but by me not being able to climb I myself cant get any better as a player because I rarely get any decent competition or teammates that can teach me anything new.

Its not about people having negative scores, its about people realizing that for every kill u give the other team, you make it that much harder for the rest of us to carry you. There has to be a point where it makes more sense to just hang towards the back and scavenge assists and basically be a support than to keep trying to be rambo hoping it works this time. People who dont understand that need to stick to normals. Its infuriating in ranked.

PoisonedPeace3 votes

I usually don't ever say anything at all. This is a video game, and if some kid (or adult I guess?) blows a gasket because I did something stupid or stole a kill (on purpose or accident) then let them. When someone else is getting harassed, and they keep complaining, I suggest both parties mute each other. If they don't I mute them both and move on.

I join queue to play a game, and I'm not going to waste more than 30 seconds focused on a couple kids that can't be mature enough to coexist for 40 minutes. If someone is harassing someone else, I will report them, but that is about it.

Gwellaouen3 votes

I remember not long ago. A Quinn defended me saying I was a good support against a Darius who trash talk all game. -_-'' At one point, that Darius decides to trash talk Quinn too. So, I decide to defend her because It's normal, she defends me first. ^^

Knucklefist3 votes

If you are 0 10 and 0 in a ranked game you deserve all the flaming there is to offer IMO. They would quite literally be better off without you. The fact of the matter is...people see the game going downhill for themselves and do absolutely nothing proactive to stop it. If you keep getting ganked......BUY WARDS. What is the matter with people who get ganked 5 times back to back and cry about getting camped? Anyone who made it to level 30 and joins a ranked game and refuses to ward doesnt belong in a ranked game. People don't even try to not be a burden. I'd rather be on the team with 4 toxic people that at least play like they are supposed to then 4 nice scrubs. Chances are the 4 toxic people really arent that toxic when their teammates actually play like they want to win.

Everyone has bad games, my self included, but you have to find a way to be useful. If you refuse to find a way to be useful to your team, dont get mad when they say something to you. The people that piss me off the most are the ones that just run around trying to split push late game and get ganked 5000 times in the process. Then they blame the rest of the team for not pushing instead of acknowledging the fact they need to stick with the team. There's no report for that. There's so many people who just wont listen to their teammates regardless of pings, friendly advice, or common sense. There is no ban for that. No one ever gets banned for being the person thats not necessarily "intentionally" feeding per se, but costing your team the game all the same. There's always the mute button if you cant take the criticism your 0 and 10 gameplay brings. I can understand if people go off the deep end and just start a bunch of name calling racism or threats, yeah thats toxic. If i'm like dude wtf is your problem, buy a freaking ward, this is like the 3rd time u got ganked and u still havent bought one....you should just live with it. I have a point.

CaesarFlickerman2 votes

Not sure why this was downvoted, as this is true. The ultimate goal is to win, and you need to support your team on the way there. If that means building tank when you didn't intend to, do so, if that means foregoing certain things so that the successful players can succeed, then do so.

I don't understand how people can't see the difference between accountability and toxicity, as being told to "get your sh*t together" after 5 wardless, super pushed ganks is not toxic, so much as you needing to figure it out. No one's going to deliver that message to you with roses in the heat of battle, and if you're the type that needs that kind of delivery, I'm inclined to believe that you know what you doing and how it affects the team, and thereby is intentional feeding.

Turn down the sensitivity and turn up the desire to not be burden, and I promise the game will be INFINITELY better for you.

Knucklefist1 votes

Because the same people who cant take criticism in this game are the same people who cant take criticisim in the real world. Someone calling them a name on a computer actually means something to them because they probably have already withdrawn from the real world because they dont fit in. If you are on a basketball team and you shoot a bunch of bricks....guess what u get benched. Your coach might even have some colorful words for you. Then he's going to make you shoot basketballs till your arms feel like they are going to fall off as practice. So maybe you dont brick so many next game. There isnt a single competitive sport where you can just go play it like a total scrub and NOBODY calls you on it. Why should this be any different? That's how they are trying to treat this game. Like a new sport.

They can downvote it all they want. Doesn't change any of the truth in the statement.

fluxanna1 votes

What if I find a game you play where you went negative? Or I should say, will I find one, and does it exist?

Knucklefist2 votes

going negative and being a total and complete failure are two different things. Don't be coy and pretend they arent. There's a big difference between.....2 and 4 and 1 and 9 or 0 and 10 or 3 and 12. Of course I have games i go negative. In over 900 games this season though my average deaths per game is 5. 4.9 actually. So yes I have games where i go negative, but no I dont have games where I'm just a feeder and totally useless. If nothing else I will ward the map and try to help other people get kills. People will get to lane at level 1, fight instead of farm, get rekt, respawn and try it again a minute later. Like its gonna go any different than it went the first time now that they have 2 levels on you.

Stop coddling people that have no business playing competitively. I can understand how someone might be awful in normals. I dont care about losing a normals game at all. Troll away. I dont play normals to avoid that sort of nonchalant this game doesnt matter behavior. My anger is with the people who have no business playing ranked. Who dont have a single decent game in their whole match history. Including the games they won. So yes you might see a game where i went 6 and 8 with some assists, or 3 and 5 with some assists, maybe even as high as like 2 and 9, with a bunch of assists. Once i'm down about 3 kills I make it a point to only die in teamfights. I'm definitely not gonna go pushing a lane with no vision trying to farm and only making matters worse.

FYI the two worst games on my main ranked history are 1 /3 / 6 and 3/ 10 /26. I lost a game i went 11/ 3 /11 , as well as 12/4/8. Cuz people couldnt stop feeding. In fact I lose a lot of games I do pretty well in, cuz people wont stop feeding. So spare me line about me going negative in any of my games. I ALWAYS have good games in my history, and unfortunately a lot of them end up being losses. Go figure.

fluxanna1 votes

I agree with you on some things, however going negative and being "a total and complete failure" are pretty often confused. I assure you that at some point if you go negative you will be flamed upon not because it's a single bad record.

Knucklefist1 votes

Yes but the thing that gets people flamed is they arent apologetic, dont take advice, and refuse to play more careful. Saying something as simple as " I suck today" or "this darius is pretty good, hes kicking my ass" does a lot to diffuse the situation. I dont get mad at people because they got countered, or maybe got ganked a couple times and got behind. I get mad when its your 4th time getting ganked and you are bitching at our jungler but you never ward. I get mad when a person keeps dying and wont buy any defensive items.

The fact of the matter is they have people in ranks for a reason for the most part. If you are getting destroyed in bronze on a regular basis, maybe ranked isnt for you. Those are the people that get flamed. The people that call top, or mid, then play a character for the first time, and get rekt. The master yi's that think they should farm for 30 minutes, never gank, then backdoor us to victory(or so they hope). I dont flame people for having bad games unless they try to turn their anger on me for them having a bad game. I have been banned because I had 4 trolls on my team that played so bad and talked so much trash because i wasnt feeding like them that they all reported me because i wouldnt follow them around the jungle face checking bushes and dying. Because I didnt have a negative score like them. Because i told them fighting in the jungle over no objective and chasing kills is stupid. Correcting peoples poor gameplay is considered toxic. I consider not having any freaking common sense to be toxic. If someone is ad and wrecking you....buy armor...not more ad to try to overpower them. If you keep getting ganked...buy a freaking ward. IF someone keeps wrecking you....stop diving them. It's the little things that people don't have to be platinum to figure out, they should just be common sense in ranked. Some people deserve to be flamed, I think its all they understand. I also flame the guy who dies 5 times in lane then practically just afks and lets his lane roam, no MIAS no nothing. They just sit in their lane hugging the turret while their lane roams the map killing people. I flame them too. You can suck at this game but still be AWARE. IF you arent even willing to have at least some minimum awareness in ranked you dont belong there.

I say if your kills and assists dont add up to 20% of the total....you were being useless. meaning if your team has 30 kills at least have 6 assists or something. Even if it means u are 0 5 and 6. At least you helped other people get 6 kills. I always get these top laners that go like 2 12 and 2. Cuz they wont leave top lane to save their lives. So assists are out of the question, and ganks are inevitable cuz they just keep pushing like a braindead zombie.

Cathaidan3 votes

While I appreciate the idea of jumping in to someone's defense, there are two problems with this.

  1. Increasing the number of people typing in the chat box instead of playing the game will make it FAR more difficult for your team to have a chance of winning the game.

  2. Getting involved is more likely to lead to you and the person you're defending violating the Summoner's Code. Just play the game out, report those who are being toxic and move on.

We all have bad games, but we all also have a mute button. Use it. It saves so much time.

junglerboy162 votes

I would back this 100%, except sometimes, joining into the argument only incentivizes the flamer/rager/troll to target you as well, and it is much more difficult to keep a level head when they start insulting you too. Safest thing is just to mute the toxic player and then be affirming to the player having a bad game, don't ever waste your time confronting the raging player, because more likely than not you will simply get sucked in and only worsen the situation. In real life, You should absolutely step in to prevent bullying and verbal abuse, but in this game format, doing that is actually not the best recourse.

I'd say join in if it's obvious that the flamed is downright mean. Often times, if someone agrees with him, then they're a duo, but if every dislikes him, then tell the other team too.

What DOES work, however, is telling the person getting flamed that they are doing fine/should do XXX instead, but more importantly tell them to mute/ignore the flamer. The flamer won't stop raging, but you can stop listening to him.

I stick up for whoever's getting raged at when I find reason to, and I'd have to say that even if it doesn't stop the person flaming all the time, sometimes it does, and at the very least, you can take a load off the person taking the brunt of the heat.

Having someone raging at you exclusively is different from having a partner to back you up, even if it's not working out.

That said, I've almost always found flaws to point out on the part of the person doing the flaming to begin with, so the more reasonable ones seem to stop (the rest are obviously idiots that, once pointed out, no one should take seriously).

The most common slew of things that the rager did wrong him/herself: Didn't leash for jungle? Didn't communicate? Didn't ward (no, not referring to the support)? Playing one-man army? Refused to roam despite being the only one with a strong lead? Lack of map awareness?

Always something. Team game.

I was playing evelynn jungle in a game with a jarvan IV top lane. he ulted his lane opponent (and me) and the opponent flashed out of the ult. I flashed out of the ult, chased down the enemy, and killed them, burning my speed boost to get the kill.

He proceeded to flame me for kill stealing, despite the fact that he was a screen and a half away when I secured the kill.

Since that moment, I have lived by the mantra that there is no such thing as kill stealing in this game. Anyone claiming otherwise is 100% wrong, all the time. securing kills faster helps the team every time. when in doubt, go to town.

I have however had some of the most fun moments when our group of 4 players are coordinating via voice chat and the fifth person on our team starts complaining about the player who is jumping through hoops to secure kills for them.

"WTF THRESH YOU SUCK" they say, as the carry, now that they're 8-0-1. Thresh, meanwhile, is now 1-5-16. We have a little fun with them, before we explain that, as the support, it's Thresh's job to make sure the adc gets the kills. after a while they start to understand.

I would love to step in and say "Fuck right off", especially when I see a duo or something verbally abusing someone and the guy is not even retaliating in anger. I will sometimes say encouraging things like "We can still win", "take my golems", "it happens, we all have bad games"; but really I would like to say "Fuck off noob you're no better lol" I mean I think people are hesitant to step in because you will just end up getting yourself reported also by the toxic players, then Riots trash automated system will chat ban you or suspend you, then the tribunal will skim over the log and see you said "Fuck" and instantly punish. It's really a shame.

It's like if you saw a kid being picked on at school and to defend him you insulted the bully, and the principal ran in and suspended you for insulting another student. Riot is that principal lol.

Someone flaming can either say one line, or end up saying 20 by replying to people engaging them in a discussion. Generally I prefer cutting back on the drama. I've honored targets to let them know that no, they weren't that bad, and reported abusers. I tell them off in a non cussing way when it's my husband that's targeted. I can't say I won't trash talk them if what they say is crude though.
