What is going on in bronze?

fluxanna··38 votes·6,038 views

Actually, I should rephrase the title: What the actual fuck is going on in bronze?

I'll begin by saying that I thank god I've never had the experience of playing in low bronze after seeing what it's like in there.

I was asked to help a friend climb, who has lost all 12 of his first ranked games ever. The last 3 were with me. He mains support and I'm astonished by what's going on. He tells me things like "his adc goes ham and dies"- which to be fair is understandable, we've all seen low bronze gameplay of people dying to tower for no good reason. And the second part is all lanes start to feed.

I honestly placed my faith in statistics to dispell the "elo hell" implication, but I checked his games and he dies very infrequently during laning. Most of his deaths, if at all are in the lategame phase where all his lanes have already begun to feed.

So I expected to be able to salvage his games and carry as ADC. Although my performance wasn't actually as great for reasons which are irrelevant. See what I had in mind was "I'll ADC and we'll have a fed-enough ADC in order to blow people up in teamfights" However... bot lane wasn't as easy as I expected- which is fine, but the first thing I know, top lane dies. Then midlane... then our jungler comes over to gank 2v1 the enemy botlane and proceeds to feed them (more than once). Then all lanes+Jungle start feeding......

The teamfight doesn't even happen. It's just us being pushed in for the rest of the game. Now you might say that I could have been able to try and do better to boost the team- however I realized that there's literally nothing I can do if the score is 14-2 13 minutes in.

This happens again the next two games...

And during these two games, there's one brand on my team who spontaneously yells at me 25 minutes into the losing game (probably after he decided to check his team's builds) "WTF ARE YOU DOING ASHE GET BORK" Which is...... not... built on her..... At least not in 6.9......... Which is what I tell him and he flames "Yeah well you don't build to win in 6.9 either" Or something like that.

And in some other game the enemy thresh rages at me for poking fun at a bad fizz ult, which I commented on as a joke.

And I bring these two examples up because (I know people supposedly flame at all elos), but I've been finishing up my placements..... And I've generally just been seeing the very quiet but serious teamplay-oriented mindset. I've seen not a single flamer, and sometimes people are just quiet, want to focus, and just say "just cs and play safe". People are pretty calm about losing games and also about winning them.

In one other game my TF+Kennen botlane duo decide that "-We lost? -Yup" and afk for the rest of the game, regardless if the game was actually lost. I think there was one other afk in a separate game as well.....

Now sure, we all know that people afk, leave and flame across all elos, but what the hell is this bronze... stuff?

I believe that once you're past a certain skill level in league, you know how to capitalize on success and close a game, and also how to play safe when you're behind.

But in Bronze? No... It's not even possible to carry... I understand that elo hell isn't "real", however it should literally, not be possible to lose 12 straight ranked games in a row without winning a single one.

After seeing what low bronze looks like, I don't think these elos are divided right. Something is seriously wrong in the low bronzes, such as BIV and BV. People are literally not learning how to play the game there. I seriously think that something is really screwed up. You can't just toss the worst players of the game into what is basically two levels. If you're bad, you just aren't going to learn anything in there. If you play a game and your mid feeds 0/100 or if your botlane afk's from 00:00, this doesn't help you learn how to play league of legends...

This is not a working system to just toss the worst players there. I think I can understand how people rage in these games. If you're stuck in there, unless you have friends in real life who are good, there's no way for you to get out. You learn nothing. Nothing that's going on there helps you learn how to play the game better, whether you're low or high elo. Seriously, int bots don't even feed as hard as B IV-V players do. If you're an actual Bronze IV player, playing with other people in that elo will not help you to improve at the game. You're going to stay in low bronze getting frustrated with feed mains and suicidal junglers, and occasionally play with plat smurfs, making their rankup harder than it needs to be.

I personally can't vouch for any solution, but I have two things to say.... Thank god I don't have to go through what my friend is going through, and for god's sake, something about this elo system is really, really messed up. I think riot cannot pretend this is a small issue and "shove it under the rug" and ignore it. From what I can tell this is a part in the game which naturally causes negativity and is an extremely problematic area.

Edit: I'm noting that some people are misreading, or at least taking some leads too far to assume that I'm suggesting I'm having difficulty in Bronze myself- I can see that some of my phrases may suggest that, but I'd just like to assert that I'm doing fine myself. I may have used some problematic phrasing earlier. But yes, perhaps I should elaborate. I was sick and trying to carry my friend out of league at 3 AM for some reason and I took the game too casually. However, I want to maintain that my three games I played with him- were un-carryable regardless. I may have just chosen a bad role. My friend, as my support was deservedly of some high bronze/SilverV, and I wasn't awake enough to figure that I shouldn't play ADC as I normally do, implying that my friend as a support is inexperienced. Ie, sitting far back and spamming heal (not the full job of a support) My games were more or less unwinnable not because I didn't perform properly, but like I say in this thread, I realized that there are incredible numbers of AFKers, people who don't understand the concept of not feeding and people who play the game on different levels of seriousness.

I maintain that there's absolutely nothing wrong with people who don't play the game 24/7, people who aren't good at the game, and people who play it very casually, but we can all agree that the divide between people who play the game very on-and-off, or will rage or AFK at first blood is by no means divided well enough through the bronze IV cutoff- as I have recently realized. So to recapitulate, in the low bronze elos, these ranked games do not teach people how to play the game, and it does not help those who want to improve, to improve.

I had an account that was Bronze V with MMR of 330 (if you know MMR at all you know how awful that is). I won 73 games in a row as Kayle carrying it to Silver I. It is definitely possible to carry at that ELO. In fact I was 1 vs 5 as Kayle the whole time ending games single handedly while my team was taking dragon for example.

Point being - you definitely can carry out of it.

One question: If you're a S1 who HAD an account of B5 with 330MMR, HOW did it get to that level? However it happened you (or whoever previously had the account) dragged down a bunch of players with you, when apparently that was totally unnecessary.

If he was playing with low me friends, and losing, it could severely drop his mmr. At one point this season, I was at 1700 mmr, then I played and lost 3 games with a silver 5 friend of mine. My mmr ended up at 1300

The argument being made is "I'm awesome, carrying out of Bronze is easy-peasy, gg". If the guy was able to go 73 game win streak from 330 MMR to Silver 1, usually playing 1v5, there is ZERO logical reason for how he could fall DOWN to 330. ESPECIALLY if playing with friends. If you can HARD carry 1v5, then being on a team with a friend shouldn't be able to drag you down that low.

It is actually extremely easy to climb out of bronze:

At one point i checked, i was at 480 MMR in bronze 5. Climbed all the way out.

I am Bronze right now. I accept that I am Bronze and it is on me to climb out. That said, I've teamed with people that I ONLY know from having played the previous game with them. As a ranked solo player I can WITHOUT DOUBT say there is a HUGE difference between playing with people that you know are at least "competent" (not Challenger Tier, merely "competent for Bronze") and "randos".

That dude you play with, TINYDICK. His game history is suspicious as all hell. Prior to 12 days ago, he mained TF and fed like a boss every game. Huge losing streaks. Looks like a gutter-level B5 player. All of a sudden he stops playing TF and is winning almost every game? Winning streaks just as impressive as the losing streaks? Sold account? Boosting?

I think all the people who are in higher tiers and/or have been out of bronze for a while have no clue what a morass of fail it's become. Basically the base level of hell and rit0 doesn't give 1 fck about the mass of players trapped there. I've challenged several friends who are in gold to plat levels and they made up throwaway accounts to prove me wrong that they couldn't make it out in a reasonable amount of time.... one made it out after a month of trying and the rest gave up. I assume they (rit0) don't care because a good chunk of their RP comes from these people..... and i use the term people loosely.

Placed B4 last season and it only took one month to reach Plat.

Gold 5 - Plat 5 maybe 50-75 games... Bronze 4 - G5 500 games or so. I don't wish that hell on anyone.

I think part of the problem is in Bronze beside just the players not being good is new accounts start in placement with a low silver elo. A lot of them are fresh lv 30s and truly belong in low bronze. The issue is after placements there elo is still way to high and they are on the fall. This means there are a lot of games these people are vastly out classed so they basically feed. It kind of sucks for others in the game trying to go up as they have people who do not belong in the game playing with them. It makes the game much more random. Same goes for the flip side as well as people are climbing and just complete outclass everyone in the game but lets face it more people who fall than go up.

Riot maybe should readjust the starting elo for fresh accounts and assume a lower level to reduce that painful fall that most people have to suffer threw.

Feeders, trollers.. people who feed then go AFK. First time champs (just bought lux, panth w/e) and have no idea how to play them.. Toxic players, flamers.. just die once and they immediately call 911 whining that you're feeding and that you're a noob, scrub, kappa mostly that you need to uninstall league.

This is no bug. This is intended and a feature.

They should introduce a "D-League" (Developmental League). Before you can do your promos, you must complete the D-League. To complete D-League you need to fit (at least) 2 criteria:

  1. Must achieve Mastery 3+ on at least 16 champs. (suggested: add this requirement to PLAY the champ in Ranked, but that's optional)
  2. Must hit "minimum" mechanics benchmarks/grades in at least 5-10 consecutive games

In other words, in order to play ranked you must meet a MINIMUM "skill level" INDIVIDUALLY before your "teamwork" LPs come into play. There's still going to be trolls, afks, etc. But ranked should begin with some measure of individual ability/achievement rather than ASSUMING you have individual capability and ranking you on "team skill".

I always kind of roll my eyes at these things.. I can see silver players having trouble getting out of bronze because they aren't much better, but if somebody really is waaay better than the average bronze they should crush easily and win most games... I think the biggest problem is newly ranked people get placed into silver and think they are much better than they really are... then when they either fall or get placed into bronze next season they can't do anything.

fluxanna2 votes

I don't think you have seen low bronze recently. But despite that, it seems hard to win 3/3 games, two of which have one or two AFK'er past 10 minutes in.

Pretty much this. New players start at Low-Middle-Elo(Silver 3-Silver 1) or around there. They lose most of their placements and get placed in High-Low-Elo(Bronze 1-Silver 4). However, like you said, they are fucking terrible and don't belong that high. They'll just feed their way to Rock-Bottom-Elo. Silly to be honest.

Yes the there needs to be a new lower division than B5. People always stand high and mightly like oh just farm up and you can perform well but bronze isnt about farming at all, its constant rushed teamfights and they either fight outnumbered or even split push when behind its cancer.

if your friend has 0 deaths in bronze, chances are he's being too passive. the secret to getting out of bronze is learning how to be agressive. if you can land all your abilites at the right time, you will win every 1v1 in bronze. and because there are people feeding, you have to try to get fed yourself... simply passive farming will not do the trick.

I carried myself out of bronze with janna. I landed all my tornados, in lane I was very good at engaging on an enemy that was vulnerable and keeping my adc alive when they were vulnerable (in 2v2 scenarios) and in mid-late game I used janna's great kite skills to bait enemies into suicide dives and secure picks.

team fights rarely happen in low elo, but then, that gives the solo player the advantage.

TheStemCellGuy3 votes

I climbed from Bronze 4 to Silver 3 solo, and plan to get to Gold!

I recognize your frustration. I am an adc main who started playing this game December of 2014(when the updated rift came out). I leveled my profile up and hit ranked, wanting to test my skills. I was placed in Bronze I, and plummeted down to Bronze 3. I gave up in ranked for a time and hit as many normal games as time would permit.

I practiced and practiced. I learned how to manage teams who were awful, or how to play with a team that didn’t give a fuck.

Let me put it in perspective of what I have had as a support on bot IN RANKED:

-Zed support who would take my kills and die to the enemy adc, while last hitting minions when he felt like it

-AD Maokai who swore he would “carry” the lane, but fed the enemy Caitlyn 15 kills in 22 minutes.

-AP Jarvan, who actually had at least 15 kills, but he then chose to get mad and feed since we all weren’t as fed as he was and could not follow up in team fights.

I have many many many more stories like that. I used to get so mad I would want to break my mouse and uninstall. I admit, this is a problem.

I believe the issue is that people get to watch fantastic players in the LCS, Youtube, Twitch, etc. They see they players and then want to emulate these people without understanding the difference between their mechanics of the game.

Add to that the fact that people in this elo generally don’t know how to deal with loss, so they don’t learn and when they get mad, they lose the game and the chance to learn any lesson that match may have provided.

With that in mind, I went into season 6 proud. I spent months working hard as an adc. I spent time with great players and the worst of the worst. I felt like I could play from behind, play when ahead, and hyper-carry when I needed to….I was placed in Bronze 4. That was a crushing defeat for me. I felt like I was trash, but I kept fighting and decided to climb. Keep in mind I play bot almost every game. I can Garen top, take a few champs mid and do okay, and jungle 2 champs confidently. I am a bot main in every sense of the word.

How did I get better? I played every champ I could in normals, or read about them.

Why?

I wanted to know when power spikes happened, when I could pusnih someone, length of colldowns. I played support, so I could get a glimpse of what it was like to support in bronze. Let me tell you, it is tough. It is hard as an adc main to watch people build and lane terribly. How can I tell them without them getting mad and doing toxic things? With some people I tried, and it worked! For others, I had to learn what it was like to support in this position.

The bottom line is that when you have an understanding of what it is like to support, adc, jungle, top, mid when someone else is behind or on tilt, you have a better grasp on HOW to help them.

Practice your skill shots, learn how to deal with toxic players by turing hate into laughter, know when a game is a lost cause and USE that time to practice playing from behind. You would be surprised at how many people don’t know how to use their advantage, and how you can practice eroding their lead until you are in a position to reclaim control of the game.

Important tips:

-Deal with toxic players the best you can -Learn how to play from behind & ahead -Practice your role (and a role that you directly interact with before team fights like top/jungle, mid/jungle, adc/support….) -Communicate and try not to be offended if someone offers advice(They care as much as you do most of the time!) -Never stop learning I am in silver, and I have a TON to work on. I can list off things I need to polish as an adc main, and every mistake I make is a lesson that I can carry on into the next game. Let people make mistakes, and make an environment conducive for their lesson to take root in their minds. I hope this helps. It is a long and grueling way out of Bronze/Silver, but it is possible. Don’t look for friend to carry you out, make friends you can learn WITH.

I know this is spoken in generalities, and I apologize if that grammar was not on point, as I wrote this at 11:30pm my time after a long day of work.

I lost 8/10 of my promo games. In nearly every loss, all lanes lost. I'm not saying I played perfectly, but in most cases my deaths were a result of other lanes losing and the other team starting to roam. The teams I get can't even ward. You're walking in the blind because of it. All you can do to get out of bronze is to play a carry role (not support like me) and pray the other team is garbage.

Bans are also used incorrectly. People just ban whatever champ they have a personal grudge against. Usually this ends in the other team picking tank ekko or something equally stupid. Then when your team also has a tryhard who goes Vayne top then you already know it's over before the game even started. You can only dodge so many games.

You can't get out of bronze unless you're lucky and/or play with a premade.

fluxanna1 votes

That's definitely true. I feel that in bronze.. you can't really get out very easily as in some matches just end before you can do anything.

Other than ADC and MID I build nothing but TANK, I also Have NOTHING but Tank runes on; all scaling too. Marks Seals Glyphs you name it I either have Armor per level Hp and/or Mr per level. The reason is because I play safe in lane phase and Just try to cs while scaling up to become a monster to help my team

How I do that Is by taking tower agro, while my team gets the kills. That is really the ONLY way for people to get out of BRONZE. Its what I call " baby sitting " No, not camping a lane but not getting cs that could be free for yourself but instead after pushing I roam and try to create pressure for my team. I could by black cleaver, Hydra and Sterak's on Darius but being that requires me to cs and not being able to " baby sit" I have to build nothing but Armor and Mr so I can tank for them.

If your friend's team sees him being a SUPER TANK and take no damage and he is in the fight for 5 years they will join in, the meta Right Now doesn't require you to have Damage as much as the games are getting shorter and shorter 1 ace and its kinda gg or a small lead can be the end of the game as well.

Maokai for example Most people build ROD on him against any and all champions in lane against him Cho Darius Riven you name it they get that item. But I would recommend just to get Dead man's plate instead.
Lets say your friend is against a Darius and is doing ok; Ok like hes farming well the Darius isn't poking him down or nothing, but the enemy Mid ANNIE got a kill and might be a problem I would get the Giant's belt first item as the HP is another form of MR, that way if your friend needs to peel for his MID he can take more damage from Darius and Annie with the HP instead of tanking the Darius with the Chain Vest but having no real defense for the Annie so the HP will help. This works great for really any top lane nowadays.

Really what I'm saying is just have your friend get nothing but tank runes for all his Runes ALL OF THEM This goes for these champions for all roles Mainly TOP and JUNGLE and SUPPORT Alistar Braum Chogath Darius DrMundo Garen Malphite Maokai Nautilus MonkeyKing you get the picture

I'm only SIlver 4 but it helped me get out of bronze 4.

They screwed bronze when they made it so that even lower skill levels can rush into bronze by making the level 30 exp cap lower. I carry most if not all of my games and my team is too bad to use that edge. I could go in depth but doing so wont change anything.

MorgManBasher2 votes

I'll be honest with you, it's not hard to get out of bronze at all, but only if you play the correct champions. You can't play passive at all. You have to play champions that can completely shit on their lane and carry the game, not a late game champion that is weak early or a traditional support.

You want to support in bronze, silver or even gold? Go Zyra or brand (vel'koz sucks now) and build carry. If you are a good enough player than you shouldn't have trouble climbing because these champs can solo bot lane.

I HIGHLY recommend heimerdnger in low ELO. He is the king of crushing noobs because they always underestimate his turrets and it's extremely easy to get double kills when getting ganked by the jungler. Run flash/exhaust, rush rylais (can go zz'rot and banner of command if you want to just push). Rylais is core though.

Jungling? Pick a ganking jungler that can snowball and carry like Hecarim or Pantheon.

Playing ADC? Go Draven with ghostblade and snowball. Though I personally prefer Miss Fortune because it's extremely easy to get 5 man ults with Miss Fortune. I go ghostblade into death's dance and then last whisper. I don't go fervor on Miss Fortune, I go deathfire for the extra damage on my ult and Q. Basically this whole build for MF is to make your ult scary as fuck and to make your Q's take half of the enemy ADC's HP with one Q. Going ghost blade on ADC is a snowball build and that's exactly what you need in lower ELO if you honestly think you are better than these people.

I see people saying play tanks.. I do not tanks, play carries. If you think you are good enough to be in a higher ELO then carry yourself out, don't play some passive character and expect to climb. Play to win. Play to crush. Play aggressive. Never let up. Grind them into the ground and make sure the enemy team feels helpless against you, giving your raging teamates a little hope seeing how strong you are so they don't afk.

I've made 6 accounts in total, I never been placed in bronze but I know what these games are like mostly from leveling 1 to 30. Some games you may not win no matter how well you play, but if you are truly better and are playing the correct play style, you will climb.

Beldair2 votes

Why do you think I avoid ranked?

Players are too toxic; if i set up a team mate to get a double, they never captilize on it resulting in my death and praise to me from the enemy adc (commenting on the nice set up and that if my adc had gone in they would've died to my adc); or i get the age old "if i had a better support i'd be fed by now" when they are going ham aftet i recalled and am in base.
