I can go 2/0/41 in ARAM as Janna and not get an S
But I can go 3/4/12 as
and get one. WTF riot.

I upvoted because I agree with the argument that mastery scores in general are bogus, and especially so in anything outside of regular games on summoners rift.
That said, not dying on ARAM can actually be a bad thing - you never shopped the entire game. Pulling off an execute would have been better, and at a certain point giving someone else a kill may have been worth so you could spend the 10K+ gold you were probably sitting on.
I agree though - especially playing a support-esque champion in a special game mode, getting an S is so hard (moreso if others will build damage on them in the special game mode). You get penalized WAY too hard for not dealing enough damage to champions. I had an URF game as Morgana where I went a support-heavy build (I think I had Zhonya's and Deathcap, but also Redemption, Frost Queens, and Locket, then eventually sold boots and Frost Queens for Spirit Visage and Banshees Veil). I went 7/3/18 (less than half the deaths of anyone else) and I don't think I even got an A. All because my damage was so low, even though I provided boatloads of utility and really made a huge impact on the game - all because most Morgana players will build full damage on URF and even though they may die more, may help their team less, they'll get more CS and do way more damage.
The problem I have with the rank system, is we don't know what could have been improved. This game I played as janna, I got 95+% kill participation. Out of the 46 kills our team got, I got 43 points in either kills or assists.
What could have made it better? If I died, I would have gotten an A- instead of the A I recieved. Generic ratings are confusing.

What you could improve was CS and damage dealt to champions (and kills rather than assists). Realistically if you would have died once, bought a Deathcap + Morello + Sorc Boots, then you'd get more CS with the extra AP and you'd have done way more damage and got some kills.
It isn't right. It isn't optimal play. It's just what a Janna player would have to do to get an S. Largely because some other Janna players either did it for fun or realized it was giving S's. Because Riot doesn't specify the system to each champion and therefore say "oh Janna isn't supposed to deal damage so we'll make that matter less for her". They have an algorithm that compares your Janna to other Jannas, so when some other Jannas start building AP and doing damage the system is like "wow you did 10x more damage than the average Janna, must be an S" and then when you play Janna properly and have 40% more damage than average (but a KDA that's 1000% better among other things) the system is just like "but your damage is too low so here's an A".
