My UX problems with new Galio
First of all, I love the redesign overall. I've played like 15-20 games with him now. His abilities are really cool and feel pretty balanced. I only have a few nitpicks that make playing him hard to justify in ranked. I'm by no means an expert in him yet, but I think these gripes are very reasonable from a user experience perspective.
First, and most importantly, is his lack of reliable ability queuing. There have been SO many times when one ability wouldn't cast even though I was hitting it. This isn't something I've ever had trouble with for any other champion, ever, either. This was particularly bad for his W. Requiring you to hold the key down makes it extremely difficult to tell when to press it so you don't screw the cast up. And if you mess up the cast, because you're holding the button down already, you get delayed and end up losing quite a bit of time before you cast it again. But you can't mash it because if you successfully cast it and were mashing, you lose the taunt. Many times I would press W right after a Q cast or E hit and it wouldn't cast. I ended up losing precious milliseconds that caused the person I hit to get out of range. You can't mash the W either because you lose the taunt. I'd also have moments when my Q wouldn't cast after an E hit either, but I was expecting it to, so I automatically moved into my W combo. I wasted the taunt dmg potential by holding them in the Q, which caused me to lose fights. This ends up being VERY frustrating. I lost easy kills because abilities I was meaning to cast weren't casting when I told them to.
Second (though I want to preface by saying this feels only slightly off), Galio's empowered passive attack time is longer than his normal attack animation, creating a moment where I would've killed someone who was 1 auto from dying, but so was I, and they beat me to the hit because I was forced to empowered auto attack. I even started my attack animation before them. I don't like that. My empowered attack should be exactly the same amount of frames, like, I believe, Diana or Nocturne are. Not being able to animation cancel (orbwalk) the empowered attack is also annoying, especially if I'm dueling mobile champions.
As a side note: After having played Galio and Warwick, I'm not, at all, digging these "hold to empower" moves you keep adding. It works much better on Warwick than Galio, but overall I think it's a bad idea. It doesn't fit with the mechanical style of our finger movements. Trigger once for on and once again for off. That is soooo much better and more functionally stable than these hold abilities. I think for Galio, it's the lack of an overtly obvious signal that you successfully started casting your taunt. Warwick dives forward, so that makes it obvious, but Galio only gets a faint ring and mildly changes shape. The ring is hard to see at it's beginning stage, which only becomes more of an issue in the heat of a teamfight. There's just not enough feedback.
That's really it. Also, I LOVE Gatekeeper Galio's voice acting. The whole Dante's Inferno vibe is fantastic. I want to play him more because of his playmaking and teamfight potential, but I can't justify it when my abilities don't reliably trigger or my passive hinders my dueling potential.
