Lux vs Xerath, Completely Outgunned?

I just played a game as Lux mid against a Xerath. I noticed we were using the same runes, and slightly different masteries but the same 21 in offense. He heavily outdamaged me, could throw twice as many abilities, and had more range than me. I felt like I couldn't even stand under tower without dieing within a minute or two in lane. I don't understand how or why he is that strong compared to Lux. Can someone shed some light?

Xerath is a pure dps mage. Lux is more of a utility mage. He will out-trade her almost every time due to his superior range and stun.

Lux has to use her shield and take advantage of any mistakes he makes to have a chance.

Use your jungler whenever you can.

lux has her passive for extra part of her damage/burst, Xerath does not. Xer has mana fixer as his passive. If you land a full combo on xer im sure youd kill him, but same goes for him on you

Because Lux has a shield which can mitigate some of xeraths poke, while he himself has no form of damage mitigation. Lux's ult is also more reliable than Xeraths. Lux also offers more Utility to her team in teams than a Xerath does. And that is really the heart of it.

Xerath = Poke mage

Lux = Utility Mage

Basically what the others have said, but they haven't mentioned how Lux will quickly burn out her mana while Xerath laughs at her and regains his with his passive.

130 mana for Lucent Singularity is PAINFUL!

A lot of this is skill base. If you compare the ability to climb a tree between a monkey and a fish it's really unfair. This is very much like orange and apple in my opinion. For example, if Ahri's playing against LeBlanc and LeBlanc can nuke Ahri down does that make Ahri out gunned completely? I mean they're both mobile, they're both mages. But ultimately it comes down to scaling factor, utility factor, cool down factor, and overall it's just a difference in kit. If you compare Lux to another utility mage such as Karma, Morgana, or Lulu, Lux would stand among the higher damage factor in my opinion (haven't test this). Also, back to the Ahri and LeBlanc match up, I've seen Ahri out perform LeBlanc and vice versa. Player skills play a part too. Can you honestly say you guys are completely even in skill? If you're punching raw numbers alone, how do you incorporate Lux's passive and Lux's skill into the equation? I'm sure mana regen is also a factor for Xerath too. Whereas if you compare Xerath to a DPS mage like Vel'koz, they're pretty close to each other in terms of damage output. I daresay Vel'koz wins by a small bit. But does that make Vel'koz better? No. The range factor too. TL;DR, I feel that Lux isn't out gunned, but in this comparison of DPS, sure she is, but it does not mean that Xerath just overall better than her.
