A Comparison: LeBlanc and Kassadin

In season 4, Both Kassadin and Leblanc became some of the premier mid lane assassins. With how overwhelmingly strong they both were, they were nerfed by riot in separate ways. Kassadin got a full rework that tried to remove his ability to teleport on to his targets, and kill them without them being able to retaliate what-so-ever (for the most part).

His silence was removed (rightly believed to be where most of his reliability as an assassin came from) and replaced with a shield that solely blocked magic damage. His ultimate was both buffed and nerfed. It got a lowered cooldown and damage that stacked when consecutively cast, but also ratios that scaled off of mana and a stacking mana cost. His Nether blade was changed from a dps mana stealing tool to one that helped offset Kassadin's early mana costs. His Force Pulse was largely kept the same (they just increased the necessary spells needed to be cast near him from 4 to 6). And his passive was changed from giving attack speed to giving magic resist and the ability to walk through minions. While still considered to be broken post re-work, after several buffs/nerfs, Kassadin is now no longer pick/ban. (2.3% pick .43% ban).

After Kassadin was changed, many started looking for which champion would replace his shoes as the premier mid-lane assassin. They eventually found their replacement in LeBlanc for many of the same reasons post re-work Kassasin was so strong in the first place.

She had what could basically be called a targeted silence and hyper-mobility that could keep the opponent guessing. However, she also had a slow that turned into a snare. an ult that allowed her to duplicate any of her basic skills, and a passive that gave her a brief moment of stealth and then a clone to help her confuse the opponent enough to either allow her to escape danger, or to finish off her opponent.

In order to balance Leblanc, the developers tried to target what made Kassadin so powerful, the silence. Her silence on procing her Sigil was removed along with her ability to double proc her sigil. Many thought that this would be the end of Leblanc as an assassin, and for a time they were right.

So why is Leblanc once again pick/ban status? That is something for the league community to discuss. Personally, I feel that it is because her kit gives her the ability to create long periods of tension for her opponent in the laning phase where she can either q them and just zone them, or quickly burst down 1-3/4 of their hp with a quick q-w combo then avoiding retaliation by returning back to her starting point. In the Late game, she has the potential to create tension for an entire team as her ability to very quickly burst then disappear allows her to pick off a team one by one while her team pushes or takes objectives.

That's it for this discussion, leave comments below and tell me what you think about this and why you think Leblanc is Pick/ban right now. Have a cookie for doing so item 2009

What if you had a cooldown between activations of Distortion, like Kha'Zix's Void Assault? That is, after she dashes with Distortion, she would be forced to wait a couple of seconds before she could teleport back.

  1. Kassadin was considered shit right after the rework dropped and only came back around 4.8ish when they gave him a .8 ratio shield on his Q
  2. LeBlanc was popular around the same time Kass was anyways
  3. they stupidly buffed LB's passive recently so that the stealth is actually meaningful for any purpose outside of making people unsure of which one is the real LB, so that probably has something to do with it.

  1. i know he was considered shit right after the rework, but they quickly buffed him after.

  2. While she was popular around the same time, she wasn't as prominent as the 90% ban rate Kassadin

  3. while I do think that the 1 sec stealth is a bit much on her passive, It wasn't till some time after that she really was seen a lot again. If i remember correctly, it was around september that the passive was changed. That means that its taken 7 months for that passive change to make her what she is now

One of the core differences between Leblanc and Kassadin now is how they can enter, exit and complete fights. Kassadin's damage rotation resets every ~9 seconds, and he has some free on-hit damage, so he can kill most targets given enough time and strategy, but his total damage is also the lowest out of any assassin, so he needs to go through multiple rotations to kill anyone. Leblanc, by contrast, has higher cooldowns on everything, including her ult, but has so much raw damage that she can kill any squishy in a single rotation. The fact that she can dive in, kill her target and retreat within the space of literally one or two seconds means she can be extremely difficult to handle properly, which is why she's among the most banned champions in the game. On top of this, it's pretty easy for her to snowball, since she can easily take out massive chunks out of her opponent's health in lane while remaining fairly safe at all times.

I think part of the reason Leblanc is popular is that in terms of power when doing well she is one of the closest assassins to Katarina, who is banned a lot and is now much worse in lane due to her low health and health regen. Furthermore her kit is relatively easy to use and people are extremely interested in picking champions who can carry games which is one of her key strengths due to her mobility allowing her to move around the map with ease. She also is probably the only ap assassin who has a blink that can be activated to create a gap with the enemy instantly after dashing into them and dealing damage. I think part of the problem is that blinks are always going to be extremely powerful in terms of power and so while a champion with a blink which deals stacking damage sounds nice blinks being incredible defensively by not being able to be hit by missiles while traveling makes a blink linked to a defensive aspect of an ability seem to be more appealing.

There's two more things about Katarina vs LeBlanc.

  1. Katarina is very weak early game, and is very easily bullied out of lane with a heavy pushing champion. LeBlanc's at her best early game where she is ranged, and can 100-0 a target in less than a second, and then bounce back to her initial position as if nothing happened besides mana depletion.
  2. Katarina is extremely easy to telegraph and shut down with crowd control, while LeBlanc can easily double dash and bounce back before you can even react.

Kat is extremely hard to deal with at worst, and a minor annoyance at best. LeBlanc, no matter the team composition, tankiness, or late game edge, is always complete cancer to face.

Kassadin has been ruined. Beyond repair. Anyone who plays him now is tournament level. This game hasn't been fun since beta.

Because LeBlanc is an early game fromage ball, and, well, Kassadin wasn't. You already know that LeBlanc is going to be able to burst your ass down at any given moment, Kassadin has to get farmed and reach level 6 before that happens. Oh, and while the stun was effectively removed from her kit (silence + root = stun), she still has a slowing tether on top of a disgusting amount of mobility. Honestly, before LeBlanc can even be considered to be remotely balanced, the chains have to go. I'm serious. The fact that this bitch gets a passive that can fake out pursuing enemies on top of two dashes (3 with ultimate) with a root is absolutely disgraceful. That and she needs a mana cost on her ultimate and a cooldown between casts on her distortion. That's the only way she gets to keep her disgusting burst damage.

  1. Distortion is the ultimate low-risk high-reward skill that gives you both damage and escape in one spell cast.
  2. Her full-kit damage is plainly higher than any other assassin, with four individual damage spells that also do average-to-great damage&ratio for each of them.
  3. She has less downtime than other assassins because her ult CD is short, and therefore she can commit to fights more often than other assassins.

Most of her strength lies in that she only needs to land 3/4 of her spells in order to do assassination damage. She doesn't need to hit distortion to kill if she can land chains, and she doesn't need to land chains to kill if she can hit distortion. It makes her able to initiate first with her escape spell to get into position, fire off QRE to attempt the kill, then jump back immediately to safety.

It is IMHO what Kassadin did except she can't build tanky and can be killed with enough coordination. Kassadin's mainstream RoA + Seraph's build meant that even if you catch him, there is a high chance that he will live; but this is not very true for Leblanc.

Although funny enough, I consider QSS to be core on Leblanc because it makes her extremely safe. Removing your most efficient counter means that if you don't play wrong, you are free to do whatever and your opponent can't capitalize on your initiations as well as you can.
