I just got a very sick feeling in my stomach....

Over the last few days of playing Twitch in ranked at S5 ( yeah, I know) I've been cleaning up. 24/5 18/3 and so on. The matches I've won I've only been getting 13 LP, however I've been losing 18-24 LP on my losses (where I stilled played very good, one we had an afk). At first I thought I was just getting better, I have changed up my game a bit and am really trying harder, but a thought occured to me today.. Am I being matched with even lower players (b5) in preparation for placements for Season 6? Last year I ended at Silver 1 and felt that was an accurate placement of my skills at the time, however in season 5 placements I ending up bronze 4....

In order to reduce my chances of being flung back into the dirt for season 6, should I be playing more preseason matches and trying harder and harder to raise my MMR? Or should I be avoiding ranked preseason altogether to stay away from the rage quits, afks, and trolls that could very well knock me down further??

When you start the new season your MMR is what matters, not your current rank.

So if you're winning more than you're losing now - by all means keep playing. It will only help.

However with how far below your current ranking your MMR must be to get such a small amount of LP when you win compared to when you lose... you may well be considered at Bronze 5 MMR already. If that's the case and it persists through your games, you may find that all of these games (and indeed, your 10 placement matches which you can't avoid) are wasted and you're put in bronze 5 anyways.

I hope that isn't the case for you. I'm just giving you warning that you may play a lot and win 55% of them and start next season, go 7-3 in placements and get placed in bronze 5. It happens. Hopefully since you're S5 now you can pull up your MMR a bit and the between that, the reset, and doing well on placements, get placed in Bronze 1 or Silver 5. Good luck.

Thank you very much for such a great explanation. Does Lolking or OPGG rating have any discernible relevance to my actual MMR?

I doubt any site will be accurate enough to be worthwhile.

In my opinion, here's the best you can do to guess your MMR: 1) Go to something like OP.GG and look at the rating of EVERY player on both teams in your last ~10 games. The average rating is your MMR rating, however discount people at tier 5 (e.g. if someone is ranked Silver 5, their MMR is probably around Bronze 2 on average, so use that instead).

Take your current division Take your LP gains and losses, adjusted for side (you get more on red than blue, so roughly subtract 3 from red side wins, add 3 to blue side wins, opposite for losses) If your average is outside of 19-21 for each, then if your wins are less than your losses your MMR is lower than your ranking. I don't know by how much, but I'd guess it's about 2-3 LP per tier. So if your wins are +14 and losses -26 when adjusted for side, your MMR is probably about 2-3 tiers below your rank (so B2 or B3 if ranked S5).

Take the results of 1 and 2. Your MMR is probably somewhere in between.

That's the best I've got. It's a huge approximation though, no one knows Riot's true values really...
