@RIOT, Confusion in the Item Actives

Hey guys, I was playing ARAM today and was looking at the items Sterak's Gage item 3053 , and Maw of Malmortius item 3156. Interestingly, both of these items have the "Unique Passive-Lifeline". I thought it was confusing how the name was the same yet the passives were different. I wondered if either they should have different names, or if together they apply at the same time.

Please let me know. I have a feeling that the passive names are supposed to be different since both items do different effects.

Thanks guys!

Hey Roll,

They are meant to have the same passive name because they are both Lifeline type interactions or same unique passive family. By that, they give you a shield or boost that is suppose to help you in a panic moment or when you need your life saved... by a lifeline.

The buffs they give are actually called something different, enraged for Maw and I think Sterak's Fury for Steraks.

The reason this came to be was a popular build was Steraks and Maw at the same time because they did proc together and it made champions really strong and very difficult to kill.

So to sum up, they do different things but are in the same family of Lifeline Passive. Hope that clears up some stuff :D

Here's a breakdown for you

  • Unique Passive
  • Buying identical items will not stack the passives.
  • For example, buying item 3114 item 3114 will not give you +20% CDR, + 16% Heals/Shields, it'll only give you the benefit for one
  • Unique Passive - passive name
  • Passives with that name will not stack
  • For example, buying item 1001 item 3006 item 3009 item 3158 item 3020 item 3047 won't stack movement speed, because the passive name is the same even though the items are different.
  • In cases where you do buy duplicates (for whatever reason) the strongest version is applied. So with the boots, you should have item 3117 out of combat and item 3009 in combat (I haven't double checked that, please don't try it in a game.)

The same concept holds true for Actives and Auras as well.

Only one will apply at a time. The second one will wait untill it's condition gets fulfilled indepentantly.

Some awesome examples in here, thanks for helping out with this :D

Also... stacking black cleavers... dark times...

Unique passives don't stack, so only one will go off. Way back early in the game, there wasn't such a limitation; imagine stacking sunfire capes and black cleavers, silly times indeed.
