An Idea for Ruby Sightstones

RollnUnderTheBus··100 votes·4,798 views

In my humble opinion, the Ruby Sightstone item 2045 isn't worth the extra 800 gold. I can buy numerous other items that would give me substantially more for that price. About 200 more HP and 1 extra ward just doesn't cut it.

I have the idea that would make it more worthwhile to get/rush earlier.

Keep the stats as is, however make it like the item 3361 where it can gain more charges while you are out in the fields. This would allow the support to stay out there longer and make the item way more useful. Keep the item 2049 exactly the same. But make the Ruby more worth my while.

Or just make ruby allow the support to place a 4th ward.

Honestly, that's the only thing I could think of that would ever justify buying Ruby Sightstone. It's literally the last item I'll complete, no matter how early I buy the original one. Honestly I've gotten to the point where I'd say scrap the ward aspect and just give a health item that sweeps, but that'd definitely be abused (as much as I'd love indirect nerfs to Teemo and Shaco). So outside of actually making Sighstone a not worthless item by giving it some general stats, that's the only option.

I'd rather the sightstone have a separate set of ward limit than the trinket. Also, allow rubysightstone this buff...

item 1028 + item 2049 + item 1028 + item 1011 = new item 2045 that has seperate limit of sightstones and gives 600 health for 2000 gold.

Pinkie5 votes

But item 1028item 2049item 1028item 1011 together give 830 health for 2600 gold.

Your idea is bad because the new meta would be to always buy item 2049 and item 2045 on all supports. Supports that benefit from stacking health would be the only competitive picks.

Bard is actually a viable tank support though. With the right build and proper use of his kit, he becomes that one person on the other team that goes 20+ minutes without being killed.

It's dangerous, but there honestly would not be as much impact as as there would have been so many patches ago.

There was a post on the boards a while ago, the person suggested that like the jungle items we have now, the sight stone could upgrade into versions that give different bonuses. As an example somebody who is looking for more tank stats could upgrade it into a version that gives them bonus armor/mr, somebody who needs to roam or get around faster could get bonus movement speed, like make it worth upgrading and give it some more value. The don't just to make it give some simple stats like that though, they could even give it some offensive stats to encourage junglers to buy it, or have scaling supports (annie or janna) who need some ap to be more effective.

Confron7a7ion72 votes

If we are going to make it like the jungle items I think the two item groups should be exclusive. You can have one or the other. Smite is becoming more popular in lane since some of the jungle items can really help laners (like item 3709 and item 3708 ) And I'm not oppose to this but imagine if you can abuse both groups. LeeSin comes to mind here. But comestible stats on sight stone could encourage chams like Katarina and Jax to purchase them and help with vision since no one ever upgrades trinkets for some dumb reason.

They wouldn't make the stats on them good enough for anybody to abuse them since the main power of the item is being able to provide your team with vision, so a restriction like that would seem rather unnecessary.

I like what OP said and what Canfron said. It doesn't to be a HUGE boost, but enough to encourage other laners to buy wards too, and help supports out. Yea, the flat health is pretty good, but if I could buy some +5% max health enchantment on it, or +20 AP enchantment, or maybe some CDR, I'd spend some more money on it. I'd say we could make the RSS 400 g (Refilled over time + health), and to enchant it, it'll be 800g (there will be different enchantments, but you can build into it, or straight up buy), and to make sure people won't abuse it, we can make it so you can only have 1 enchanted item (Whether it be your smite or your SS).

Look, people get wards for FREE with base yellow trinket and still don't place them. I dream of a day where people "abuse" item 2049 / item 2045 rofl.

YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO BE SACRIFICING SOMETHING WHEN YOU BUY SIGHTSTONE; I dont think people realize the value of vision, i didnt even know sightstone gave health until as of late. and if youre going to buff it, just add more health or mana no need for cdr/speed/jungle clear/passives/actives/etc. orrrrrr just listen to all these stat hungrys and make it do

20%cdr/1%max mana rej/10%ad and ap boost/11%speed boost/revive passive--then folks will be happy to purchase one

Hey, I'm a plat support main and I thought I would add my grain of salt. This commenter is right, sightstone gives no useful stats for a reason and it never should because you're just asking for people to build it no matter what in every role if it is actually gold efficient. Ruby sightstone is EXTREMELY good as fully placing a single charge will cover the combined cost. Placing roughly 20 wards will cover the cost of the entire item. That is STUPIDLY gold efficient and vision is really valuable. So this item statistically has to be terrible since it is stupidly gold efficient. Tl;Dr sightstone is great and doesn't need updates, any more stats and it will be OP.

Scryer4 votes

Or, do for supports the same thing junglers were given. Ruby SS : 5 ward charges (Limit 3 on map) + HP + AD/Mild slows on auto-attacks Emerald SS : 5 ward charges (Limit 3 on map) + HP + Armor/MR Sapphire SS : 5 ward charges (Limit 3 on map) + HP + AP/Mild slows on spells. Or some similar system of customization on sightstone.

I agree big time!!!!! this is such a smart upgrade to sightstone. Make the recharge time a little longer so it doesn't get abused and people never back though

TheRainInSpain3 votes

The problem is that Riot really doesn't like the idea of anyone else using the Sightstone, so the stats are purposely weak to discourage the other four players from picking it up. A potential solution would be to buff the Sightstone IF and ONLY IF, you had a Gp5 item too. The only people I see with Gp5's that are not Supports were 99% beginners. Aside from the beginners, I've only seen one player do it, and he did the math for it.

As for the Ruby Sightstone. It needs a buff. More health and possible a 4th ward would be worth a bit higher cost.

Mob Psycho 1002 votes

You save a ton of gold with SS and Ruby SS is mostly for late late game.

There has been ideas of Enchantments being thrown around with different things you can branch towards with different effects. You can probably look for them through the search bar.

Maybe something like it automatically upgrading after placing x amount of wards? It'll buff itself up to Ruby Sightstone so you dont have to spend extra money on it. It'd be a very small buff, but it'll save you that 800 gold needed to upgrade SS to Ruby.

I have the idea that would make it more worthwhile to get/rush earlier.

Making it more worthwhile to rush earlier would be bad. The current version allows supports to spend only 800 gold on it and then build something else. Something fun, something that actually helps them do what their champion does (tank, throw hooks, heal, shield, whatever). "Worthwhile" to rush would have a very high danger of instantly turning into "mandatory" to rush (much like the base sightstone itself...) and take away even more gold from midgame supports.

Along with that, what if item 2045 was built from item 2049 & item 3067 OR item 3010 rather than just a item 1028. This would make item 2045 a better Item for Late-Game, as, stat-wise, it's expensive for taking an Item Slot when you could just get the item 3361 Trinket.

A lot of Supports could use the extra CDR from item 3067 or the lane sustain from item 3010, and such changes along with the Buff (or similar) you mentioned would make it stand out as a Viable option for Late-Game when everyone's Full-Build and you feel like you have only 1/2 of a 6th Item with the current item 2045.

While item 3067's CDR would be nice going into a Mid-Game Support's Build, it seems item 3010 would be the ideal option here as every [meta] Support uses Mana, and the extra Sustain in the field would give more flexibility, allowing Supports to Roam more with less backing Mid-to-Late Game - which would only synergize with the Regenerating Ward Charges.

Either way, including one of the Upgrades to item 1028 will make item 2045 feel more worth the Gold and not feel like Supports are being dragged down by a falling-out Item Late-Game when they can take item 3361.

The thing is, sightstone allows you to get the upgraded scanner which lets supports get complete vision control.

pls upvote. as a jungle who buys sightstone almost religiously to help with vision, this would be amazing. perhaps a a bit more health too?

TiberiusAudley1 votes

This change might work for lower levels of play to encourage supports to stay out more, but at higher levels of play, supports need to constantly be basing in order to buy more pink wards -- many pro supports buy double digit pink wards per game to rotate their center of vision or simply because the ones they had got cleared out.

This would be an idea of balancing for mid levels of play.

DarkTea1 votes

Although this is a valid point, I still think it's a good idea to recharge over time without basing. It makes more sense specially if you are behind. If you base, you are also loosing the chance to generate more gold, so it would be better when you need the extra sustain. Get more health and keep warding defensively. Higher levels of play also means the players know better how to manage gold efficiency and situational items and/or item upgrades. Besides, what's the issue with updates that benefit lower and mid levels of play?

Jester Seraph1 votes

Wouldn't offensive teams also be stronger as well? They can continue pressuring the lanes while keeping their aggressive warding, giving them knowledge of the defensive team's positions and rotations and leading into a much faster victory.

In my experience, the defensive team is cycling its players around in base a lot more because they're closer to base, therefore less distance to return to defending and thus less gold/exp lost per back, and if they're being pressured, chances are they'll get bullied into needing to back, thus the position cycling to keep up defenses.

It's great if something benefits lower and mid levels of play, but only if it doesn't oppressively effect higher levels of play, and vision is something that can very easily make or break a game. Giving higher levels of play that much more vision while playing aggressively = 20 minute LCS games and a Ruby sightstone rush in every build.

How about having a bigger upgrade from the yellow trinket? Like have an upgrade cost 400g or something and have the ability of the item 2049, but without the health. Like it gives the support their 6th item and more choice. (Sry if i dont get wat im trying to say)

The Fusionist1 votes

i get so self-conscious when i don't upgrade ruby sight stone like ill be so distracted by having sight-stone and not yet having ruby yet and it's just awful cause its not even that different from sight stone.

Harrys Nut Shack1 votes

Yeah no point at all to buy Ruby sightstone. Maybe once every 1,000 games a support actually scrapes together enough money to complete a full build.

quichwe101 votes

I rarely even get my fifth item, but that could just be because I play unranked.

Dengeden1 votes

As long as LCS is a Christmas tree, they're gonna leave this item well enough alone. Heck I don't even think it's that bad an item if you're low on gold (which you usually are).

Sergeant Schlock1 votes

I had an idea where Ruby Sightstone build something similar to this: item 3751 +item 2049 =item 2045 , carrying the effects of Bami's Cinder over to RS, giving it more utility, and slightly buff the health amount to match.

Jester Seraph1 votes

inb4 Rito throws the community a bone and ups the hp for ruby sightstone to 420.

Thairn1 votes

Personally, I'd like to see Ruby Sightstone allow you to turn a green ward into a pink one or something, or slightly increase your vision radius/grant you bush vision within a close radius. That way when you're being the support and someone ducks into the brush, you still have to move a bit closer, but you'll reveal a small circle of the bush near yourself without entering it.

Qsario1 votes

That's a good idea, it'd be a lot more worthwhile than "I'm at full build and have nothing left to buy."

W6ryv9Qjjs1 votes

How about have a buff every minute like the Spoils of War where it instantly kills a ward for 1 auto and it steals the ward so you get a charge for the Ruby Sightstone or you get the pink ward in your inventory and if you have a full inventory, you get 100 gold. Same if you have full Ruby Sightstone , you get 75 gold.

TL;DR You get a buff to instantly kill a ward and you can keep it if you have space and get gold corresponding to the type of ward killed if you don't.

SoMNia1 votes

Support itemization in general is pretty screwy. The problem is that they don't want non-supports building the items, so they make them give bad stats on purpose. Then supports end up with inventories cluttered with mediocre items and have trouble making a difference late game compared with supports who didn't bother building support items. ESPECIALLY that "core" support item, Sightstone. Because Ruby Sightstone isn't worth the inventory slot, let alone the gold. IMO, they need to completely rework the sightstone to remove the Ruby Crystal and make it build into a couple of different items. If they just make sure the build paths are weak in stats early, but worth the slot once fully built, that will be ideal.

Shahamut1 votes

What about having ruby sightstone boost the number of active wards you can place by 1? (You could have 4 wards and 1 pink then)
