Yasuo is a toxic champ because he has little counterplay.

GigglesO··14 votes·2,490 views

He has high mobility. He has a Shield. He has double crit chance.
He has high DPS. Windwall is a big F You to ranged champs. Q gets CDR based on attack speed.

So what exactly is his counter play, and why do we insist on making him a strong champion.

Feel free to downvote, but well all know the above is true. Can't even click on the good yasuo's with how they dash through champions/minions.

Edit: I'm talking about counter play. Not counter picking.

Just play Malz into Yasuo. Can't really windwall space aids.

Play a melee into yas, or tank, legit counters him 100%. Dont tell me a champ has no counter play when you dont even try to think of the champs that counter him

Ah my bad. Then git gud and just afk farm and roam if youre bad against yasuo. Thats what every good player does lol. Or even better, afk farm and wait for your jungler to help.

GigglesO5 votes

Picking a champion specifically to fight yasuo is different than having to pick before him. If the only counterplay is to outpick him, then you are relying on always being last pick, or maining a champion that specifically destroys yasuo.

Stars Shaper2 votes

This is how counter picking works. Are you going to pick Anivia vs Zed? Are you going to complain to kingdom comes if you get counter picked?

Given the champions we told you, you have 3 choices:

  • Ban Yasuo yourself if you really can't come up with anything to beat him (I do it with Fizz just because I don't want to see him at all).
  • Preventively pick one of those so that a Yasuo pick won't scare you.
  • See what those picks have that counters Yasuo and try to play around this with other things you know better.

For example, I usually play Aurelion Sol which is not a suggested pick against Yasuo. What I do is not letting him setting his own game. I know that my stars won't be stopped by his wall and I focus on them and AA and force him to use Windwall when I want to block my Q (Windwall CD is enourmous early game). This opens good gank windows and allows me to stun him easier the next time. Also don't try to win in chasing/escaping inbetween minions. This is just like being Syndra and wanting to beat the enemy ADC with only your Auto Attacks.

Stars Shaper3 votes

Any other Assassin walks over Yasuo because he can't counter nor defend from their burst. Xerath is a valid option too because he only has one skill that gets blocked by windwall. Riven treats him as a rather funny minion and farms him. Azir plays with him like he wishes. Mordekaiser just facetanks him. Annie doesn't even care. A decent Syndra can also beat him regularly. Akali also walks over him like nothing. Kayle is also a good option. Wukong, Ornn or any other with a dash can melt him pretty easily.

ÔneWindyBoi3 votes
  1. Don't fight him near minions, try to catch him in river or jungle when he's warding or rotating
  2. He auto-shoves, so let him do it and have your jungler gank from behind. Yasuo's only real option will be to try and use the minons to 1v2 which he shouldn't be able to do early on. If he does, accept that you got outplayed and learn from it.
  3. Windwall is a super long cd for basically the whole game because you max it last, just bait it and then fuck him up. Even if you have to use a good ability to bait it, it's likely that you'll have your cd before the windwall is back up

Yasuo is an extremely fragile champion and the new runes system really hurt his early game because you can't come into lane with 29% attack speed from runes. You absolutely need to respect his damage until you've backed and bought once or twice. Yasuo is extremely dangerous before items and he becomes super shitty until he has 2+boots

Double crit, so if he catches you in river when you follow with two items he is already in late game, and has a dash to get into melee range of you.

  1. He auto-shoves, so let him do it and have your jungler gank from behind. Yasuo's only real option will be to try and use the minons to 1v2 which he shouldn't be able to do early on. If he does, accept that you got outplayed and learn from it.

Not all Yasuo's auto shove. If you're having yasuo's that auto shove its probably an indication of what MMR you are playing in.

  1. Windwall is a super long cd for basically the whole game because you max it last, just bait it and then fuck him up. Even if you have to use a good ability to bait it, it's likely that you'll have your cd before the windwall is back up

The good ones don't block pathetic spells, and to get good ones to use it most of the time you have to hard engage. If you hard engage, followed by a disengage he can typically win the trade due to his high early damage. Last season you weren't even allowed to get into melee range of him early game because he could just auto you to death level 1.

He isn't very fragile when dashing makes it difficult to click on him, and he has a shield passive. ^^ and this last statement is my biggest issue "big threat early", "hyper late champ" So there is this very tiny window in the middle of the game after he buys his first crit item, but before he builds his second crit item that you can actually fight him.

Stars Shaper1 votes
  1. How does he dash into you if there are no minions and you should be not close to him to begin with?

2)Good Yasuos then force you into a farm lane which is not bad for you either.

  1. Yasuo players, even good ones, are not perfect reflect machines and if they do block each and every decisive skill you throw then it's probably you to be not on par of his skill level.

  2. His passive shield can be proced at will by any ranged, again don't try to engage him hard if there are minions around just try to get some poke in (his dash isn't long and you can also try to trac available targets but it's not easy, I can giv eyou that).

Overall Yasuo is not that hard to deal with if the players are on par with skill level, if yasuo gets to outplay you then he deserves to get the advantage.

  1. How does he dash into you if there are no minions and you should be not close to him to begin with?

So if I'm not supposed to get into range of his dash, how am I supposed to kill him as a melee champ? How is he going to be in range of my autos as a ranged champ for me to kill him/cc him?

2)Good Yasuos then force you into a farm lane which is not bad for you either.

Except that he scales faster because of his crit passive, so no, not it is not good for me.

  1. Yasuo players, even good ones, are not perfect reflect machines and if they do block each and every decisive skill you throw then it's probably you to be not on par of his skill level.

So my counter play is based on him making a mistake... great? We could use that argument with any champion.

  1. His passive shield can be proced at will by any ranged, again don't try to engage him hard if there are minions around just try to get some poke in (his dash isn't long and you can also try to trac available targets but it's not easy, I can giv eyou that).

So counter play. Don't get into range, don't fight him in minions, hope he messes up. Hmm that sounds like there is another champion that seems to have "exactly the same" counterplay but is even less mobile. Mordekaiser But no, we can't let him be popular or strong. 48% winrate overall, and for a champion that is mostly one tricked, its honestly pretty pathetic. Morde has more weaknesses than yasuo, he's kitable, and has no cc...

Please stop telling me how shitty yasuo is just because his counterplay is don't fight him in minions, and don't get in range of him.

He doesn't have real counterplay like sion type champs have. Slow, telegraphed movements, decent cd's.

Yasuo's dash and his double crit are honestly his largest offenders to him being strong. Tone either one down and we have some counterplay.

Telling me yasuo has counterplay is like telling me J4's E-Q has counterplay. "well don't be in range, if he sucks he will miss" [sg-miss-fortune]

Stars Shaper2 votes

You turn the argument back and forth without making clear what your problem is. I faced it having a mage in mind because that's what gets screwed by windwall and his dashes. Most of the melees can simply walk over Yasuo, Mordekaiser is one exactly because Yauso is far more squishy and doesn't have proper defenses against melee champions and as a mastery 7 Mordekaiser you should feel ashamed of yourself. Why is windwall even a concern for you?

GigglesO1 votes

Its not about me counter picking yasuo, its about watching my teammates suck dick because the enemy has a yasuo on it. Again, we are talking about counter play, not counter picking. Morde is a COUNTER PICK. Say it with me COUNTER PICK.

Stars Shaper1 votes

I fucking wrote you 2 times about counter play and then you come in bitching about how you intended melee and not mage and then mage but not melee. Get your brain straight before complaining about things. You didn't discuss anything about the counterplay yourself because tyour replies are all about: "what if he yasuo is better than the enemy? how should the enemy counterplay him?" well if Yasuo is betetr than he should win, that's how things work.

GigglesO1 votes

That's because you aren't giving actual counter play. "Just stay out of range" isn't counter play (unless you are playing an adc), because you could just say that about anyone. Lux- Just stay out of range. Teemo- Just stay out of ranged. Morde- Just stay out of range. Best part he has a dash, so he CAN get into range.

Force him to push lane/push him in Isn't counterplay that is simply #1 restated because you expect him to not dive tower, and for him to not just walk back to his tower after he's pushed. Which is not counterplay. That is lane management. If you are both properly managing lane it should stay roughly in the middle.

Poking him to get around his windwall and shield is also not counter play. If you are properly playing the game you should be poking in the first place. So he gets to freely ignore some of your poke in the form of his passive shield, and can dodge it easily with his dash. Which means he doesn't need to use his windwall to block one of your "poke spells" and he can keep it up for a full engage or gank.

None of the things you mentioned are actually counterplay. Lets look at one of the most counterplayable champs Sion Passive- takes a long time to activate, you get 1 speed buff, and if someone cc's you, you don't get to use it. R-easy to dodge Q-easy to dodge w- if you pop it he gets no damage e- Needs to hit a minion or its short range. He has a somewhat slow movement speed.

Yasuo Passive- free poke block + double crit Q- Short range but when combined with dash it effectively allows him more functionality. Also gets CDR without having to build cdr. w- blocks literally everything ranged e- Makes his knockup from q undodgeable, lets him easily get into range to q or auto r- undodgeable, you shouldn't have gotten hit by his undodgeable dash and knockup combo or that naut ultimate. 345 MS - Good luck running away.

And if you are stuck with. "I wanna know how to melee against him" then just dive him when he doesn't have his tornado up and hasn't dashed in a while, any melee has more base stats than him, a single armor item is enough pre-6 to tank enough damage and punish him hard enough . I don't know if you have specific picks in mind but generally you can use the mobility of other melees to get out of the tornado or jump on him at your discretion and if the melee has not mobility they usually have higher damage than Yasuo or other exploitable tools. If the problem is your team dieing to him then you probably need to roam in their defense or just keep down Yasuo as he dashes in.

Also don't try the typical "omg free critz" argument because that's BS, any other squishy melee fighter has a steroid and this is Yasuo's.

So, you haven't seen him use his dash through champions on a tower dive to avoid taking damage... yea... well towers hurt too much early game to stay under tower for that long. Especially when you are playing a champion that has less than 345 MS. HE CAN JUST OUTWALK YOU, and if you do manage to get to him. HE CAN DASH THROUGH YOU, THEN OUTWALK YOU.

Double crit, so if he catches you in river when you follow with two items he is already in late game, and has a dash to get into melee range of you.

Why are you waiting until he has 2 items to follow him into a situation where he would be at a disadvantage? It takes about 20 minutes to get to 2 items most games, unless the enemy laner is a monkey and you snowball off them.

Not all Yasuo's auto shove. If you're having yasuo's that auto shove its probably an indication of what MMR you are playing in.

If he's playing aggressively and trying to kill you he's shoving the wave, that's how it works. If he's playing safe, dive his ass with your jungler.

Force windwall and have your jungler gank? Even if you block an Ahri charm or something you're not addressing the part where Windwall is a 26 second cd. In this example charm is a 12 second cd. So even if he were to block her best spell that guarantees death, she can do it again before wall comes up. Also, whether or not you were able to trade with him at level 1 last season was heavily dependent on matchups.

The window is much larger than that in the mid game. Rush Ninja Tabi, watch him cry as he does no damage to you. Bring jungler, smash the squishy Yasuo that has a Zeal at best, more likely to be daggers and a crit glove. He's also not at all a hyper late champion. Every single other melee carry scales way harder. You ever see what happens when Yasuo tries to duel Yi? Or Tryn? Or Fiora? Or Jax? Or Nasus? Do I need to keep going?

You just said "hes a big threat early", and "stay out of range" So how am I supposed to follow him early? Especially when he has ONE OF THE FASTEST MOVEMENT SPEEDS IN THE GAME.

If he's playing aggressively and trying to kill you he's shoving the wave, that's how it works. If he's playing safe, dive his ass with your jungler.

Or he is standing there just last hitting. Not all MMR's spam auto's on minions to push the wave. As far as diving with junglers, You can't rely on "just camp him" to win lane for you. All Junglers should say this with me. YOU CANNOT RELY ON YOUR JUNGLER TO WIN LANE FOR YOU.

Force windwall and have your jungler gank? Even if you block an Ahri charm or something you're not addressing the part where Windwall is a 26 second cd. In this example charm is a 12 second cd. So you have exactly 12 seconds to "force a play" in which yasuo knows his windwall is down, and will be playing more safely? Sure bruh, thats lots of time. Matchups should not be considered as counter play. SAY IT WITH ME, PICKING A CHAMPION THAT BEATS ANOTHER CHAMPION IS COUNTER PICKING.

The window is much larger than that in the mid game. Rush Ninja Tabi, watch him cry as he does no damage to you. You just said "hes a big threat early", and "stay out of range" So how am I supposed to follow him early? Especially when he has ONE OF THE FASTEST MOVEMENT SPEEDS IN THE GAME.

What I said was, "You absolutely need to respect his damage until you've backed and bought once or twice. Yasuo is extremely dangerous before items and he becomes super shitty until he has 2+boots"

I also said, "It takes about 20 minutes to get to 2 items most games, unless the enemy laner is a monkey and you snowball off them."

So explain to me how you can't find any window where Yasuo is weak?

Or he is standing there just last hitting. Not all MMR's spam auto's on minions to push the wave. As far as diving with junglers, You can't rely on "just camp him" to win lane for you. All Junglers should say this with me. YOU CANNOT RELY ON YOUR JUNGLER TO WIN LANE FOR YOU.

Holy shit, have you ever even played Yasuo? Stacking your Q and going for dashes to PLAY AGGRESIVELY (like I said) is going to push your lane in. That gives your jungler an easy opportunity to come get a flash and/or a kill because Yasuo actually has very little escape. It's not like he's going to be able to use your minions to run back to his tower. Why would any jungler not take a free opportunity to get fed off of and dumpster a squishy baby Yasuo? With the state of how snowbally the game is now it's incredibly easy to shut down Yasuo and close out games before he can recover.

In that example the wall is actually down for 14 seconds while the second charm is ready, and yeah that's plenty of time to go for poke or an all-in. That was just one example; I'm fairly certain that almost any non-ult skill shot is going to be a lower cd than Windwall, especially late game when everyone but Yasuo has cdr because it's a pretty garbage stat on him.

Mid game? You mean that part of the game where he has two fully built crit items? "no damage" [sg-miss-fortune]

I actually can't tell whether or not you're trolling and intentionally ignoring valid points

Umm I main morde adc... If you want a good challenge in getting to Diamond, I suggest picking him up and maining him against the champions that "counter" him. Also, if I was boosted to diamond I wouldn't have 1k games getting to diamond, and they wouldn't be on Morde. Most of those boosters abuse champions like Lee Sin, and Yasuo.

For the record Morde doesn't care that much about yasuo. Infact morde has a 55% winrate against yasuo. I'm just really frustrated that we keep ignoring the fact that champions like Yasuo, Vayne, Lee Sin are ALWAYS POPULAR. I'm tired of always playing with or against them or having them banned.

I've had enough games with or against yasuo to see what he can or cannot do (remember that I have more than 1k games this season, and in ranked). Its pretty hard not seeing Yasuo when he is in almost every game. Are there bad yasuo's? yes. Are there good ones? also yes. The biggest issue with champions like yasuo/lee is that when they are played correctly they have literally 0 counterplay.

They have the mobility to dodge skills. "But don't fight him in a minion wave" So you mean I have to auto shove the minion wave, leave myself vulnerable to jungler ganks, and then somehow fight him while he is under tower? or Wait for him to shove, and then somehow convince him to fight under my tower? oh yea "much counterplay"

But he can miss his q. If he misses his q, with how fast it travels, he was out of range, or miss aimed it.

But he can miss his knockup! Well, ok, have you seen a yasuo dash to his target and press q. Oh thats right it spins them into the air, which allows him to ulti.

Well his windwall has a long CD. Damn right it better, a spell that strong needs to have a large cd. If a yasuo is good, they don't just block one auto with it.

Champions like Lee Sin, Vayne, Yasuo, are almost always popular because they are too strong when played correctly, and for that they should All be toned down.

Yasuo's counterplay is that he relies on being around minions/champions.

No minions makes it so that he doesn't have an E

No minions makes it so he has to take a while to stack his Q.

His Q is pretty dodg-able, even at less than 360 movespeed.

Congratz learning that simple throwing of 1 AA just beat half the Yasous outta lane. Why? Because half of them will never zip, without shield. Also if he does go in, and you have some cc he's dead. If a yasuo is in melee range of you, he should not be missing his Q. He has a dash that can knock you up, which if he dashes to you and spins you CANNOT DODGE A TARGETED DASH, which makes his knockup undodgeable. His ulti is undodgeable.

GarthBrooksXD1 votes

Another solution is not getting in range. There's a reason he's one of the lowest win rate champs though.

HalcyonDweller1 votes

One trick I've learned that works really well is to stand off to the side of the minion wave just out of range of his E so that if he tries to dash towards or trade with you he has to leave the safety of the minion wave and he loses the ability to use his dashes to dodge stuff while trading with you.

Mostly I just do this when I'm expecting him to try to trade with me. By forcing him to come to me, I get more time to react and I can usually kite or CC him. Be sure to keep things warded if you want to do this, otherwise the jungler might sneak up right on top of you.

The champion has counterplay to literally every single ability.

Passive lasts less than a second and can be popped with literally any damage Q is a melee ranged skillshot and a slow as fuck projectile W has a 10 year cooldown and does literally nothing against melee champions E requires building up to do any damage, meaning he can't use it on those minions he built damage up on to escape, or he does no damage with a short range dash if he keeps them up. R can never be cast unless you get caught out misplaying.

Wait for a wave to clear before fighting him and he does fuck all item 3047 lowers the damage not just on his autos, but his Q as well item 3143 chips off massive gold value from his purchases

The character is literally made of counterplay potential.
