Good top laners?

So I have a local tournament coming up soon, and they're forcing me to play top.

Usually I play Nasus or Tryn top, but Nasus' early is too weak and exploitable, while Tryn probably doesn't provide my team a tank. Shen is also in my sights but his laning is just SO WEAK.

I'm considering Renekton, but please leave some feedback.

Nasus, if you're good, you can stay in lane til level 6 without recalling, once went 8-0 only recalling once as Nasus

People usually in higher elos will pick hard Nasus counters. I had to ranked vs a gangplank and it was living hell. When I freeze lane to farm he would just Q when I went to Q a minion. Still managed to get like 400 stacks at 24 mins but boy it was living hell.

Play whomever you're best at. If you decide to play a first time Gnar cause he's strong in the top lane, you're going to lose the tournament.

Knowing Gnar, Maokai, and Hecarim give you flexibility in lane picks and they are all very strong atm. Gnar is a strong lane bully and Mega Gnar is an insane teamfighter. I build BC and full tank unless very far ahead, then I will pick up a BotRK as well. Maokai is a fantastic peeler, works very well in a double ad comp (such as varus mid and another adc) and is very tanky with his ult. He can sit on a catalyst while picking up a frozen heart and visage, which makes him near impossible to kill in lane and mid game fights, and finishing the righteous glory helps him initiate if that's what your team needs. Hecarim can be very tanky and hurt a lot with just a triforce into defense items, and the teleport homeguards map presence is real.

Maokai, better jungle? I've seen him top in the LCS but never see him top much.

Maokai is top 77% of the time in high-level play. He used to be very poplar, but is now only moderately so.

Stick with Nasus and bring a flask and flash/TP to lane. You're hardly exploitable. Farm under tower if you need to, you're pretty good at it.

I have considered him to be my one trick pony, but knowing that high elos won't let you farm, it's really not worth the effort.

Considering Irelia, Renek and Maokai for my tournament.
