About niches and viability

Ever since the Marksmen update, Riot has been trying to push champions into individual and unique strengths or the so called niches, this is healthy for the game environment since each champion has a reason to be picked... the problem is that when every champion has a niche, there will be some of them that aren't as useful as others.

Take Corki for example, Corki happens to be the champion whom I feel the most comfortable with, I picked him up back in season 1 when they gifted UFO Corki and spent a crazy amount of time playing him all the way from season 1 to at least season 4 mid season 5 until he started to loose viability or stay behind balance wise. I'd love to call him my main but my champion mastery says otherwise and the reason is the following.

Corki fits his niche perfectly, a little bit too perfectly actually, meaning that there is no reason to pick Corki unless your whole team goes AD and then, ONLY THEN, Corki becomes a true powerhouse on a team, but on a regular comp or even a pure AP comp, picking Corki is simply a handicap. I want to play Corki on every single game, I really do, but I know that statistically my chances of winning with say MissFortune (mastery 7 with 70% win rate) are much MUCH higher than with Corks. I don't think Corki needs buffs but he needs to be more flexible.

This thread isn't just about Corki though, because I know there is a lot of people out there who are in love with a champion that fills a small and almost unnoticeable niche, but Corki happens to be MY case. Of course there's also those who simply power through with tryndamere Mid or ADC but objectively that shouldn't be the norm, it's ok to love a champion but being flexible yourself is important too especially with Riot's current design direction.

My complain is that there are champions whose niche is too broad (I can fairly say that I can pick Tristana or Ashe into ANY matchup and my chances of winning are heaps over picking Corki) and champions whose niche is too narrow...

thoughts?

I agree but if you make every champions niche narrower then whoever has to pick first is always at a disadvantage. But if you make every one more generic then there will certain champions who are just objectively better versions of some other champion.

So as a varus adc main, I know what you mean about feeling like my pick isn't as viable as i want. But I also know that we are in a pretty good middle ground right now and the only other options I know of are worse.

yes I can agree with this as well, the place we are in right now is indeed quite balanced, people keep saying that they see the same champs every game but I honestly see a plethora of different champs and comps every time I queue, with some exceptions of course like Urgot and Yorick and whatnot.

As far as finding a better choice I think that theoretically there is one solution but I can't think of one myself, changes to these champions would probably break them and changes to the other champions would probably break those as well, balance is quite delicate :S

that is league balancing in a nut shell

corki is in a bad place right now. but the meta is always changing

That is true, there was a time when corks was part of the holy trinity of ADCs.

There is but one thing that got kinda thrown out of the window with him though, they gave him probably the most risky skill for an adc and it happens to be way overtuned based on its best case scenario (700% ad scaling).

My point being that I don't think Corki will particularly find a good spot competitively any time soon since he isn't held back by the meta, as a matter of fact he functions on this meta quite well as long as his team happens to be all AD, it's an odd situation that repeats on several other champions and that I hope Riot could fix.

I feel this is sentiment is also true of Teemo and Shaco. These are slippery split-push champions that create death traps to prey upon those that gank them. It's a very unique niche that only a select few champions can accomplish, but has never been hugely successful because it only synergizes well with global assassins. At the end of the day, it's a team game and when a champion can't fit well into a team, it loses out to champions that do. Additionally, these are one-trick ponies that, when picked early in a draft, inform the enemy team what the enemy wants to do in order to be effective. The versatility of champions like Shen that might be most comfortable in a certain team comps, but can fit generally, often win more games.

So far it's Corki, Varus, Teemo and Shaco :P any more champions that might fit in? Mundo probably and Quinn too.

More or less I agree, but I'd say it's more of riot's design philosophy shifting into this bothersome game changer. Nautilus & nocturne are my favorite tank & assassin, but because they're specialized they often are either outperformed or countered by generalists. For example malphite & gragas are better at disruption, engage, and counter-engage; while yasou & leesin are better at reaching, eliminating, and escaping.

yeah exactly this, I didn't want to sound like a hater but generalists can be a problem if they completely outshine everyone else

I'd go as far to say that niche champions are just specialist ones, that are so weak that they cannot even keep up with generalists.
