Why are knockbacks also considered knockups?

I think its mainly because they both classify as displacement, since one moves you up and the other moves you in a direction. Whereas a snare or stun leaves a person in the place they started. So its not that a knock back is a knock up its that both a knock back or up count as displacement cc.
Well in order to knock someone backwards, you would probably have to take them off their feet, thus its also a knock up. Its not like they are sliding around when you knock them back.
So if I shove someone they are flying through the air? Not necessarily. One can very well push someone and send them sliding across the ground.
Sure you can knock someone back by sending them through the air, but you can also knock someone in a direction by pushing/pulling someone along the ground.

Not necessarily.
IRL, sure, but most knockbacks that are currently in the game do fulfill the flavorful image of knocking someone into the air in a direction and mechanical consistency with the few outliers makes for an overall better game experience as players can understand and apply the rule "if it's an enemy ability that knocks me somewhere, it qualifies as a knockup" without having to remember a laundry list of exceptions and exhaustively experimenting with every new ability to learn if it also has exceptions instead of just being able to assume.
Also there's actually only one "knockup" condition used in the game for both knockups and knockbacks, players just use those two terms to distinguish between a knockup with little/no horizontal component to one with a large, obvious, and/or essential horizontal component.
Honestly I agree that knockbacks should function like Knockups, however the OP was asking why they are the same mechanically. I didn't think your explanation was a very good one as it left a lot of outlying cases unexplained.
I tend to take on the role of pointing out flaws in logic, regardless of my own opinions on the subject. Also if all knockbacks weren't counted as knockups it would be pretty obvious which abilities are which. Pretty sure the only difference would be which ones a Yasuo could ult off of.
"Knock ups" are any period of being disabled in which your champion is "Airborne".
Displacement spells apply "Airborne" to their targets instead of stunning them during the knock back to avoid complications involving Tenacity.
Idk. I mean it's pretty annoying when a
gets a courage of the collosus shield after his R, as if he is fed, he is practically immortal. Same with
and
(but not with courage of collosus)
gets a courage of the collosus shield
Wat.
Lee sin with courage of the collosus gets a shield after he uses R. And if he is fed, he'll probably just be invincible if he uses the shield at the right moment.
I'd guess that it's because of interaction with tenacity. Knockups can't be reduced by tenacity. If knockbacks could be reduced by tenacity, then it'd make a lot of champion kits wonky.
Blitz pulling enemy only 65% of the way if the target has
, for example.
I like the idea of Irelia only getting pulled 39% of the way when there are more enemies then allies nearby though.
It'd be funny for sure, idk if it'd be healthy for the game
Many people think the game health is not good so even getting this for a patch would be worth.
Maybe we should put it in the patch where we remove the rest of Irelia's abilities :)
At this point I would not be surprised in the slightest if that happened.
This more of a problem in the word we use to describe displacements. "Knockups" Refer to anybody that is displaced by an enemy team. Hence why Yasuo can Q off a thresh hook, because they are "Displaced".
They aren't. Knockbacks and Knockups function similarly because both of them are considered displacements.
Short version: They're the same thing.
Long version: They're both displacements, which ignores tenacity. A knock-up just doesn't move you, while a knock-back will send you away. Similarly, a pull is also a displacement.
Honest version: Tech and foresight limitations.
Forum version: Spaghetti code.
Bronze version: Nerf Urgot?
